Exponential growth of photovoltaic systems connected to the grid has been observed over the last decade in Brazil concurrently with concerns about the power quality and operational compliance of related equipment. In the past decades, there has been much research and debate regarding the definition of electromagnetic compatibility requirements. Since Brazil has both government and private entities responsible for the product certification and homologation process, it is important to discuss and analyze these entities’ roles from an electromagnetic compatibility viewpoint in photovoltaic systems connected to the network. Thus, it is our aim to amplify current discussions on the Brazilian scenario. This work provides, first, an analysis of the origin and propagation of conducted and radiated electromagnetic interference in grid-connected photovoltaic systems, highlighting such concepts as symmetrical and asymmetrical noise and unintended antenna effects. Finally, the standardization framework is investigated based on the Brazilian scenario and current standards.

The time measurement efficiency of the partial discharge (PD) relies on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and gain of the high-frequency current transformer (HFCT) sensor. However, the PD's time measurement efficiency decreases with the noise coupled to the HFCT in onsite measurements. To overcome that setback, this paper proposes one pre-processing, through modelling and simulation, considering the physical effects, features of the electrical circuit and coil construction parameters of the HFCT. The main goal is to reach reasonable high SNR under the strong influence of background noises. This investigation aims to validate the hypothesis of improvement or deterioration of the HFCT signal response through a transfer function optimization. This research effort's contributions are threefold: 1. Generation of PD pulse signal and noise addition; 2. HFCT modelling, simulation, and frequency response analysis; and 3. Models performance evaluation and validation of hypothesis. In conclusion, the pre-processing approach stands out as a means to robustify and provide freedom to the electric utility, making up for an eventual need to redefine the physical and geometrical parameters of the HFCT sensor under specific background noise for maintenance tests purpose. According to a cyber-physical system framework, experiments corroborate the project's goals to contribute to the PD pattern monitoring in onsite measurements and incorporate robustness to signals with low SNRs.

X-ray computed microtomography (μCT or micro-CT) allows a nondestructive analysis of samples, which helps their reuse. The X-ray μCT equipment offers the user several configuration options that change the quality of the images obtained, thus affecting the expected result. In this study, a methodology for analyzing X-ray μCT images generated by the SkyScan 1174 Compact Micro-CT equipment was developed. The basis of this analysis methodology is texture descriptors. Three sets of images were used, and then degradations and noise were applied to the original images, generating new images. Subsequently, the following texture descriptors assisted in scrutinizing the sets: maximum probability, the moment of difference, the inverse difference moment, entropy, and uniformity. Experiments show the outcomes of some tests.

FPGA became a low-cost platform providing the possibility to design new "EMC friendly" control techniques for power electronics. However, some of the functions required in the power electronic control system are difficult to implement in FPGA. The main challenges are connected to the fixed-point operation, and the need to adjust the dynamic range of numbers. To provide design insights on this topic, the paper presents an FPGA-based random modulation technique intended for DC/DC converter for harmonic reduction. The presented random technique is compared with deterministic PWM in terms of harmonics reduction and FPGA hardware resources. The theoretical algorithms, hardware details, and experimental results are presented and discussed.

Cancer is currently one of the main health issues in the world. Among different varieties of cancers, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the world and accounts for 75% of the world's cancer. Indeed, skin cancer involves abnormal changes in the outer layer of the skin. Although most people with skin cancer recover, it is one of the major concerns of people due to its high prevalence. Most types of skin cancers grow only locally and invade adjacent tissues, but some of them, especially melanoma (cancer of the pigment cells), which is the rarest type of skin cancer, may spread through the circulatory system or lymphatic system and reach the farthest points of the body. Many papers have been reviewed about the application of image processing in cancer detection. In this paper, the automatic skin cancer detection and also different steps of such a process have been discussed based on the implantation capabilities.

The assessment of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is important for both technical and legal reasons. This manuscript addresses specific issues that should be taken into account for proper EMC assessment of energy systems that use power electronic interfaces. The standardized EMC measuring techniques have been used in a laboratory setup consisting in two identical DC/DC converters with deterministic and random modulations. Measuring difficulties caused by the low frequency envelopes, resulting from frequency beating accompanying aggregation of harmonic components of similar frequencies, were indicated as a phenomenon that might lead to significant problems during the EMC assessment using currently binding standards. The experimental results describing deterministic and random modulated converters might be useful for practitioners implementing power interfaces in microgrids and power systems as well as for researchers involved in EMC assurance of power systems consisting in multiple power electronic interfaces.

Breast cancer is one of the deadliest cancers for women. Early detection of skin cancer gives a high chance for the women to escape from the malady and obtain a cure at the initial stages. In other words, early detection of breast cancer has a direct relation by the women's quality of life. In this case, mammography images are important. Indeed, the main test used for screening and early diagnosis of breast cancer is mammography. In recent years, computer-aided cancer detection has been turned into an active field of research and showed a promising future. In this study, a new optimization algorithm based on thresholding is introduced. A WCO algorithm is employed as the optimization algorithm. WCO is a new meta-heuristic approach which is inspired by the FIFA world cup challenge. The presented method utilizes random samples as candidate solutions from the search space inside the image histogram with considering to the objective function that is utilized by the Kapur's method.

This paper presents a novel, cost-effective printed circuit board (PCB)-integrated microwave sensor with a planar circular complementary split-ring resonator (CSRR) for the dielectric measurement of liquids. The proposed sensor design comprises glass capillary tubes inside the PCB substrate; these tubes contain the samples. Thus, the sensor can estimate the complex permittivity of the sample inserted in the tubes passing through the PCB and parallel to the CSRR sensor plane. These sensors can be manufactured on low-cost substrates, using conventional methods employed in the PCB industry. Subsequently, the sensors can be integrated into the PCB of an electronic circuit. As a proof of principle, a PCB-integrated water–ethanol sensor is fabricated on a FR4 substrate. To evaluate the operation of the sensor, a measurement setup is used to determine the resonant frequency and the Q factor. The complex permittivities of the tested samples are estimated using these determined values. Based on a comparison with the values reported in previous studies, it is concluded that the proposed sensor operates successfully and detects the proportions of each constituent in tested water–ethanol mixtures tested. Moreover, additional types of liquid mixtures can be tested by employing the proposed method.

Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) provides the possibility to design new “electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) friendly” control techniques for power electronic converters. Such control techniques use pseudo-random modulators (RanM) to control the converter switches. However, some issues connected with the FPGA-based design of RanM, such as matching the range of fixed-point numbers, might be challenging. The modern programming tools, such as LabVIEW, may facilitate the design process, but there are still fixed-point operations and limitations in arithmetic operations. This paper presents the design insights on the FPGA-based EMC friendly control system for DC/DC converter. Probability density functions (PDF) are used to analyse and improve pseudo-random algorithms. The theoretical algorithms, hardware details and experimental results are presented and discussed in terms of conducted electromagnetic interference emission.

However, the theoretical analyses as well as experimental results have indicated that ostensible reduction of the EMI level generated by random modulated converters results from the methodology of the EMI spectrum measurement, adopted in currently binding standards, rather than physical nature of interference generation phenomenon. The experimental investigations, presented in the paper, have shown that utilization of commonly used EMI measuring standards might lead to wrong conclusions in a case of assessment of electromagnetic compatibility of random modulated converters. The aim of this paper is to propose the novel, efficient method enabling objective evaluation of the EMI generated by random modulated converters.

Image segmentation is one of the most important tasks of visual machine and image processing that helps to recognize the pattern. Grouping of the pixels of an image helps to understand it. One of the successful methods for segmentation of the complicated images is artificial neural networks. Artificial neural networks are a subset of data science that can be used to extract significant data from the image. There are different methods that are proposed for the development of neural networks. The purpose of this chapter is to study different evolutionary algorithms for optimizing neural networks in different ways for image segmentation purposes.

Operation research concepts can help healthcare facilities with unplanned situations, crisis, and handling of supplies, utilities, and strategies. A methodology for dealing with the Man-Hour (MH) distribution in a cellular type Healthcare Organization (HCO) is introduced, and its goal is to maximize the use of resources and workforce. The problem is modeled via Linear Programming (LP), which results in a minimal cost flow problem with the simplex algorithm. The proposed framework (MCFP) can motivate individuals, reward ability and individual knowledge (not only moneywise) plus improving patient care. Such model can help to devise a software tool for decision making with performance and efficiency; it brings direct profit for the HCO and its staff due to the superior management of their MHs, and it increases the benefits to the community they serve. The methodology models MHs in an HCO to optimize management, decision-making tasks, and resource distribution.

Positive definiteness and Hurwitz stability of the interval systems are discussed. A linear matrix inequality representation is introduced to simplify the analysis of the interval system. First, it is shown that the interval matrix can be stable if it has 2 conditions. Afterward, they converted to linear matrix inequalities for simplifying the conditions solution. A Lyapunov function is introduced to prove the new representation based on linear matrix inequalities.

Mathematics is a discipline much feared by most students in schools. Handing out strategies to demystify this discipline through interdisciplinarity, that is, to show how mathematics can be used in other branches of knowledge is our goal. Thinking about this issue, we developed the POEMATHICS Project as an alternative activity for the teaching of mathematics allied to the Portuguese language teaching. This initiative consists of relating the mathematics with the written language. Students should develop poems, poetry, texts, stories, music, etc., using mathematical terms and ideas. To promote this activity is necessary the participation of teachers of a language (this work deals with English examples and a workshop done in Portuguese) and Mathematics so that students can be accompanied and together awaken the pleasure of learning as well as improving math and linguistic skills.

The quality control of the agricultural products, which in many cases is through intuitive observation of the visible features of the product, plays a key role in the survival of the agricultural industry. For a long time, the qualitative categorization of these products has been performed by trained people who search products for the specific characteristics. On the other hand, hard and repetitive working can cause people to make some mistakes in computing the quality control errors. Hence, by entering the machine vision systems into this subject, they turned into a reliable, low-cost and real-time technology. Despite the existence of machine vision systems in this process, there are still major challenges in categorizing agricultural products in terms of quality, size, shape, and examination of defects. Potato is one of the most important agricultural products that is produced and has a high application. Unfortunately, it suffers from various types of diseases and defects. Hence, its quality control has a particular importance.

With the objective of improving the transmission of content in wireless telecommunication systems, in simulation environment is proposed a precoding process of bits based in the application of discrete events in the signal before of the modulation process. The proposal brings a different approach of usual technical, in which the signal transmission on the channel is realized in the discrete domain with the implementation of discrete entities in the process of bit generation. The present work implements a model based on discrete events applied at a low level of abstraction in a wireless telecommunication system named hybrid method, being used the Simulink simulation environment of the MATLAB® software. In the simulation are considered advanced modulation format for signal transmission in an AWGN channel, and the studies are performed in different physical machines. The results show improvement of 9 to 30% in memory utilization, as also best computational performance as to simulation time. The extension of the results of this study has a strong impact on the methods performed in higher layers, being able to improve them even more, since this proposal acts on the bits.
