The Proteus effect of exergames has been widely regarded as a factor that influences human performance and learning. Within the context of security and defense exergames, identification with a digital alter-ego affects students’ task performance as well as their emotional states. In the present study, we examined the influence of the perceived masculinity of male avatars on players who were engaged in gamified military exercises (based on competition and command) in a three-dimensional environment. Analysis of data that were obtained from 51 male learners using semi categorized interviews revealed that, during the game, participants with more masculine avatars were more self-confident, engaged with the task, and obtained higher scores than their counterparts with less masculine avatars. Moreover, when they adopted an avatar that they perceived to be more masculine, they reported improved mood, self-confidence, and decisiveness after the completion of the game.

The Zn(II) and Mn(II) removal by an ion flotation process from model and real dilute aqueous solutions derived from waste batteries was studied in this work. The research aimed to determine optimal conditions for the removal of Zn(II) and Mn(II) from aqueous solutions after acidic leaching of Zn-C and Zn-Mn waste batteries. The ion flotation process was carried out at ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure. Two organic compounds used as collectors were applied, i.e., m-dodecylphosphoric acid 32 and m-tetradecylphosphoric 33 acid in the presence of a non-ionic foaming agent (Triton X-100, 29). It was found that both compounds can be used as collectors in the ion flotation for Zn(II) and Mn(II) removal process. Process parameters for Zn(II) and Mn(II) flotation have been established for collective or selective removal metals, e.g., good selectivity coefficients equal to 29.2 for Zn(II) over Mn(II) was achieved for a 10 min process using collector 32 in the presence of foaming agent 29 at pH = 9.0.

The aim of the article is to prove that sustainable development goals can be supported by security and safety education, where security refers to the state of being free from danger or threats and safety applies to creating protection from risks or dangers. This kind of education, which is obligatory in Polish schools, encompasses interdisciplinary knowledge and universal values focusing on improvement of human existence through minimisation of threats. Through the Word Frequency Query, the most intense descriptors of security and safety education were distinguished and fitted within the framework of sustainable development goals. The obtained data were supported with literature analysis identified with relevant keywords in the Web of Science database. It was proved that security and safety education reflects the idea of sustainable development in a variety of aspects. Since common foundations were identified, it could be inferred that teaching security and safety is a great platform for promotion of sustainable development goals. Moreover, in countries where security and safety education is taught as a separate school subject, more cross-disciplinary sustainability issues should be implemented in the curricula and taught with the use of novel strategies and tools.

The four dimensional design approach focuses on cognitive, emotional, social, and psychomotor dimensions of learning. It relies on balanced differentiation of educational activities. Such a differentiation aims at increasing learners’ motivation. In this paper, we examine the adoption of the four dimensional design to a non-core blended course designed and led at the War Studies University in Poland. Data collected from 59 respondents through structured interviews and the analysis of learning outcomes revealed that the four dimensional instructional design approach applied to a blended course keeps students motivated and engaged in the learning content. Our results suggest that university instructors should incorporate the four dimensional approach into instructional strategies to maximise learners’ motivation and learning outcomes.

This article aims to analyze the potential of new technologies in the area of green chemistry didactics. When viewed through the lens of systems thinking, the use of these ubiquitous tools can be a driving force for the development of a sustainable world because of their global use and reach. The authors concentrate on flat e-learning platforms, social media tools, virtual reality platforms, and machinima, as these tools enable learners to participate in different interdisciplinary topics and exercise habits that trigger behavioral changes through learning by doing or learning from mistakes. To demonstrate the potential of innovative didactic tools, examples of mini scenarios for the development of chemistry lessons are provided, and these scenarios promote the sustainability concept and systems thinking. The authors conclude that the pursuit of sustainability goals in chemistry education should involve extended thinking about instructional design and asymmetries in technology use, as well as incorporate green teaching into the principles of green chemistry.

Using the model of analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation (ADDIE) with regards to instructional design has become a prevalent practise among e-learning designers and developers. This model assumes assigning specific roles to project team members and their linear cooperation. However, in case of working in a dynamic and complex environment, the ADDIE model may evolve into more adaptive and people-oriented Agile instructional models. This article analyses a hybrid approach to the process of creating the e-learning course introduction to cultural awareness in specific situational context, which involves a small size of a project team and geographically dispersed project contributors. The case study reveals that a successful accomplishment of multinational projects, conducted in specific environments may require a hybrid approach; moreover, in such atypical projects good communication skills and personal qualities are crucial for goals’ achievement. The results of qualitative analysis may open further discussions on this topic. Keywords: ADDIE model, Agile model, e-learning course, instructional design.

The article proposes a concept for e-course scenario design, which takes into account three dimensions of learning mentioned by K. Illeris: cognitive, emotional and social one. The author notes that due to the nature of the activity in cyberspace, the process of designing virtual resources should include an additional, fourth dimension – psychomotor. In her view, the adaptation of a modified concept of Illeris will help to optimise the process of analysis and design of educational activities, especially in the face of challenges that will arise in the nearest future.

The article discusses the current situation of the spent batteries and portable accumulators management. It reviews recycling technologies of the spent batteries and portable accumulators which are used in the manufacturing installations in the world. Also, it presents the authors’ research results on the reductive acidic leaching of waste material of the zinc-carbon batteries (Zn-C) and zinc-manganese batteries (alkaline Zn-MnO2) delivered by a company dealing with mechanical treatment of this type of waste stream. The research data proved that the reductive acidic leaching (H2SO4 + C2H2O4) of the battery’s black mass allows to recover 85.0% of zinc and 100% of manganese. Moreover, it was found that after the reductive acidic leaching it is possible to recover nearly 100% of manganese, iron, cadmium, and chromium, 98.0% of cobalt, 95.5% of zinc, and 85.0% of copper and nickel from the solution with carbonate method. On the basis of the results, it is possible to assume that the carbonate method can be used for the preparation of manganese-zinc ferrite.
