Modern eco-neighbourhoods are designed to implement the 3e principles: ecology – equality - economy. The ecological aspects require harmony with nature and people. The equality concept stipulates living together in the environment which stimulates individual growth and well-being. The economic aspects encompasses promotion of short-distances circular economy, securing employment for the inhabitants and limiting wasteful spending. The goal of those principles is to create the neighbourhoods, where the well-being of inhabitants is promoted. This paper discusses how the designed environment based on 3e principles can influence the creation of community engagement, social bonds and social capital.

The global pandemic of COVID-19, which enforced strict isolation, demonstrated the responsibility of architects and planners for public health promotion. While the concept of therapeutic landscapes is rather new, the quest for designing health-promoting human environment is at least as old as urban planning. The garden suburbs of Ebenezer Howard and Patrick Geddes were planned to promote health and well-being. The ultimate goal of Le Corbusier was to provide daylight and fresh air to each apartment. However, towers in open green space, which were built according to his visions, turned into unfriendly large suburbs. Today, the definition of therapeutic landscapes encompasses not only physical aspects of environment but also social and psychological factors. This study focuses on attempts to create health-promoting places. The interesting question is what are the architectural features linked to health promotion? Although the individual perception of health-promoting places is subjective and may vary, there are some objective qualities of eco-neighbourhoods that are conducive to human health and longevity. This study combines literature review with field observation and resultes in the development of the conceptual framework which can be consolidated into the universal standards for health-promoting places.

There are pristine landscapes that are believed to stimulate the processes of healing. The purpose of this research is to find the features which can be installed into the urban environment to promote health and well-being. Many researchers stipulate that one of such qualities is a certain level of complexity and details. Dull, repetitious environments are linked to modern diseases. One of the important health-promoting features seems to be the architectural variety. In this paper selected aspects of architecture and health-promotion are discussed using examples from ecological neighborhoods in Europe.

What are the qualities of health-promoting places? Is the presence of water necessary? The rain gardens which are collecting the stormwater could become the dynamic elements of the urban landscape. Apart from ecological services they can also benefit human health. This paper presents two examples of sustainable water management in Gdynia, Poland and one in Asnièrs, close to Paris in France. The rain garden constructed near InfoBox in Gdynia is a good example of the implementation of the city environmental policy on a small scale. This rain garden in a planter helped to create an inviting place. Another rain garden developed as a part of the urban regeneration strategy in the northern part of Gdynia proves that such investment could make a huge difference in the quality of local living. A previously neglected space became lively and inviting. The Rue Soeur Valerie in Asnièrs is a good example of how to create a friendly, walkable street using a sustainable water drainage system. This paper discusses the positive health impact of water management.

In this paper, the case of the Coastal Strip in Gdańsk is presented. Gdańsk has natural and cultural heritage of great value and is included on Tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage List as “Gdansk—Town of Memory and Freedom”. The Coastal Strip is a rare example of landscape with natural dunes located within walking distance from densely populated residential districts. Therefore, the economic pressure for urban development is extremely strong. At the same time, the rise of social awareness about potential consequences of urbanization brought numerous efforts by local activists and researchers to prevent further development of the Coastal Strip. This study consisted of assessment of therapeutic qualities of The Coastal Strip using a conceptual framework—a universal standard for health promoting places. The results demonstrated that The Coastal Strip is a health-promoting place, thus adding new research-based evidence against plans for urban development of that area.

The quest for sustainable development and biodiversity protection leads to the creation of a new generation of urban parks where man allows natural plant succession, soil regeneration, and rainwater infiltration. New urban nature parks are also places for the promotion of social contacts and physical activity. They can be regarded as health-affirming places. The common features of urban parks presented in this paper can be seen in modern eco-neighbourhoods in France. Public parks of this new generation are planned for the centres of new eco-neighborhoods. These parks are being constructed in the first stages of development. Similar commonalities have been observed for eco- -neighbourhoods around the world. The paper presents three examples of good practices: three new parks of this new generation in the eco-neighbourhoods of Paris.

This paper presents a binary rough assessment of ten public parks in Bydgoszcz, followed by a detailed assessment of one of them – Dolina Pięciu Stawów. The assessment was conducted using the universal pattern of design for health-affirming urban landscapes. The binary rough assessment results were satisfactory and similar for all parks. The results of the assessments indicated areas for possible improvement and can be used by the designers and inhabitants as justification for amendments. The major advantages of selected parks were qualities of space for mental and physical regeneration while the major deficiencies resulted from a lack of recreational equipment for various age groups and limited opportunities for social contacts. There were no major discrepancies and the fact that the rough assessment showed only little variation depending on the size of parks is proof of its limitation. This subjectivity of the rough evaluation was mitigated by a detailed assessment of Dolina Pięciu Stawów. This evaluation indicated further areas for improvement. The universal pattern of design for health-affirming urban places can be used as a ready-to-use tool.

The first attempts to create eco-neighbourhoods date back to 1960's. First they were developed in northern Europe – Denmark and Sweden, but the concept was gradually spreading to other countries including Holland, England, Germany, France, etc... The French National program of eco-neighbourhood certification ÉcoQuartier was initiated in 2012. So far over fifty projects were awarded the certificate and many more are already engaged in the program. Although, there is some criticism, the program is regarded as a real-life laboratory which tests new sustainable solutions and offers additional educational value. The concept of eco-neighbourhoods is relatively new in Poland. New neighbourhoods are being constructed without officially using the term of eco-neighbourhoods. It is an interesting question to compare the new neighbourhoods build in Poland with eco-neighbourhoods in France, certified as ÉcoQuartier's, and determine the challenges and obstacles for Polish neighbourhoods to become eco-neighbourhoods. The Assessment list and guidelines developed by French Government and used to evaluate and certify the projects in ÉcoQuartier program will be used as a reference. The challenges identified include: universal accessibility, access to public green space, mixed-use development, sustainable management of water and soil, energy saving, urban design and cultural environment, architectural quality, economic environment, social capital (e.g. different age groups), risk management, climate change adaptation and protection of biodiversity. Some of the challenges can be overcome with help from the local government. This study, in author's opinion, may be used to start a discussion about implementation of standardized national certification program for eco-neighbourhoods in Poland and maybe in other Eastern European Countries.
