Florbela Carvalheiro holds a Ph.D. in agroindustrial engineering and is a senior researcher in the Bioenergy and Biorefineries Unit of the LNEG-National Laboratory of Energy and Geology, Lisbon, Portugal. From 2009 to 2017, she was the coordinator of the Biomass Deconstruction Program in the Bioenergy Unit.
She began her research work on the development of fermentative processes for the valorization of lignocellulosic biomass. In the last 20 years, she has been developing mild pre-treatment processes aiming at the selective fractionation of biomass towards an integrated upgrading in a biorefinery framework. In particular, her research interests are related to the valorization of hemicelluloses and lignin.
She has participated in 39 R&D projects (11 EU projects) as project coordinator (1), project manager (2), work package leader, and task leader. She is the author of seven patents and more than 100 papers. At the academic level, she regularly collaborates in advanced international courses as an invited lecturer and thesis evaluator. She is a founder member of SIADEB, the Ibero-American Society for the Development of Biorefineries.
