This paper presents a traffic light system based on wireless communication that provides a support infrastructure for intelligent control in the context of smart cities and aerotropolis areas. An aerotropolis is a metropolitan subregion with an infrastructure centered an airport. Traffic intensity is increasing all over the world. Intelligent dynamic traffic light system control is being sought to replace classic conventional manual and time-based systems. In this work, a wireless sensor network is designed and implemented to feed real-time data into an intelligent traffic light system control. A physical prototype is implemented for experimental validation outside the laboratory environment. The physical prototype shows robustness against unexpected issues and local failures. The results are positive in terms of the scope of experience gained, and there is potential for these tests to be extended to larger areas.

This paper focuses on control of a Darrieus vertical axis wind turbine prototype. Throughout this work a control strategy is proposed and a methodology is presented in order to achieve a solid foundation for the control process. A non linear dynamic model of the Darrieus prototype equipped with a permanent magnet synchronous generator was developed. The model was linearized and some controllers are developed, namely a PID controller and a Linear Quadratic Regulator. The controllers were tested in the linear and non linear models.

For an industry 4.0 environment, the management and offering of services, falls over the construction of a stable and reliable sensor and actuator infrastructure. Industry 4.0 is undergoing increase advancement, infrastructure availability and public acceptance, mainly boosted by the Interconnected Things. The public acceptance drives an increase on investments, carrying an insurgence of companies competing with each other to gain market. Although lessening costs, this insurgence has brought heterogeneous infrastructures and solutions availability, challenging services providers. Among the challenges the security and different technology solutions support are of the most importance. The scattering of solutions and software code have to be conveniently gathered to avoid weak-points, eventually, a menace to be explored by hackers. This paper is a contribution in order to embraces those challenges in a new architecture framework able of supporting the creation of solutions for Smart Grid and Smart Living services providers under the industry 4.0 paradigm. The architecture framework design offers security, simplicity of implementation and maintenance, and is resilient to failures or attacks and technologically independent. Field tests are reported in order to evaluate key aspects of the proposed architecture

This paper presents a traffic light control system based on wireless communication technologies. Traffic density is increasing at an alarming rate in developing countries which calls for intelligent dynamic traffic light control systems to replace the conventional manual and time based ones. The approach followed in this paper is based in a secure wireless sensor network to feed real time data to the intelligent traffic light control. A physical prototype was implemented for experimental validation. The physical prototype showed robustness against local failures or unforeseen cases showing that the communication between modules keeps an acceptable packets received ratio.

The actual electric grid was developed to offer electricity to the clients from centralized generation, so with large-scale distributed renewable generation there is an urgent need for a more flexible, reliable and smarter grid. The wireless technologies are becoming an important asset in the smart grid, particularly the ZigBee devices. These smart devices are gaining increased acceptance, not only for building and home automation, but also for energy management, efficiency optimization and metering services, being able to operate for long periods of time without maintenance needs. In this context, this paper provides new comprehensive field tests using open source tools with ZigBee technologies for monitoring photovoltaic and wind energy systems, and also for building and home energy management. Our experimental results demonstrate the proficiency of ZigBee devices applied in distributed renewable generation and smart metering systems.

In the future smart grid the consumer will play an important contribution to the quality of the electricity transmission and delivery and to the reduction of the grid carbon dioxide emissions, by applying a conscious behaviour to their energy consumption. But, to be able to accomplish that, the consumers need to know and control their activity so they can act upon the available information. Several works have been done to study and create different technologies for home automation and energy management, but few works exist to study the actual implementation and installation procedures of such technologies and the creation of kits and templates. Hence, this paper provides novel field trials in home automation and energy management with open source solutions and the resulting analyses, offering a template for a universal kit creation. The kit modules installation configurations, their pros and cons, minimum hardware and conditions that must be taken into consideration for adequate implementation, are provided.

The current grid must be updated and controlled with automated systems that offer the intelligence of the smart grid. In this task the wireless networks for sensors and actuators are very important component of the future grid infrastructure, being the “nerve cells” of the entire system. The most important player in the smart grid is probably the consumer, that can use the electricity and at the same time can have its own generation to be feed into the grid. Hence, metering devices are essential components in the smart grid, monitoring the consumer's behavior and offering valuable information to the utilities and electric entities that will adapt the generation to match the consumption in a seamless way. The ZigBee standard is getting an increased adoption for the creation of cheap wireless networks that will connect the smart grid devices with each other. Still, there are little or no works that study the actual installation approaches, minimizing possible obstacles and decreasing costs. This paper present new field tests that study the integration and installation of ZigBee capable meters, offering at the same time several installation approaches.

The rapid growth of wind power generation and the need for a smarter electrical grid with a decentralized energy generation, especially in the urban areas, has increased the interest in vertical axis wind turbines (VAWT). The Darrieus type VAWT performance prediction is a very complex task, since its blades move around the rotor axis in a three dimensional aerodynamic environment that leads to several flow phenomena, such as, dynamic stall, flow separation, flow wake deformations and their natural inability to self-start. In the lift-type turbines the self-start incapability can be overcome with the use of several more or less complex solutions, being one of them the development of a blade profile capable of making the wind turbines self-start. Hence, this paper focuses on presenting a new methodology for fast development of new blade profiles, for self-start capable Darrieus type VAWT.
