In view of the 2020 global health crisis and its repercussions on the global economy, the need to redirect conventional economic thinking towards securing global economic sustainability is most critical. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a significant move in this direction. However, in the past few years, a clearer understanding of inclusive economics and sustainability indicators have progressed our ability to reduce economic exclusion, chiefly represented by global inequality. Collective wellbeing within the “global village” is shaped largely by these avenues/directions, thus presenting the question: can an improved combination of sustainability priorities be identified that would substantially enhance countries’ adoption of the SDGs? New, inclusive paths to economic progress are essential to a world economy in crisis recovery mode. The aim of the paper is to qualitatively identify key indicators from these different directions to, collectively, address some of the most significant drivers of global inequality, thus improving the adoption rate of the SDGs. As its main contribution, the study found that for economic inclusivity to realistically reduce global inequality its full integration into three areas is necessary: business models, public policy and community development. This should also be supported by “social covenants” to facilitate improved SDG adoption by countries.

In view of inclusive growth (IG), a critical research question is: What adjustments to the growth process are necessary to ensure inclusive development? In attempting to answer this question, the paper investigates the concept of inclusive growth from different perspectives and examines the challenges and policy priorities for inclusive growth in the African context. Essential components of inclusive growth are identified. Given the promise it holds to help overcome the pressing obstacles of poverty, unemployment and inequality in a broad-based manner, IG is seen as instrumental in increasing Africa’s economic inclusivity. The question of how inclusive the growth of African economies ought to be, is essential for ensuring sustainable development, considering rising population growth rates. The paper makes a contribution to mapping the way forward towards reaching this goal. Key findings are a reinterpretation of genuine growth and how inclusivity criteria can be used to achieve it.

Background: In view of growing concerns about global inequality and economic exclusion within and between countries, the theme of ‘inclusive economics’ or ‘economic inclusivity’ is gaining significance.Aim: In discovering a more in-depth understanding of inclusive economics, the article develops a conceptual framework to better understand both the interpretation and application of inclusive economics.Setting: As an ideal setting, the post-global financial crisis period provides fertile ground to explore alternative economic theories and systems such as inclusive economics. Methods: A variety of terms and theories are associated with inclusive economics, hence a conceptual and theoretical analysis, in a descriptive context, is used to clarify the theoretical demarcation of this concept. Results: Since the concept does pose a challenge to conventional economic frameworks, a key result is that it may become a valuable addition to the range of economic thinking and proposals in solving much-needed 21st century economic challenges. Conclusion: The article contributes towards developing a new paradigm for genuine economic progress – in theory and practice.
