The main purpose of the paper is to identify the outcomes for employers and employees indicated in research related to workplace health promotion interventions (WHPIs). We investigated what methods are used and what types of organization this type of research is most often carried out in. In addition, the authors attempted to assess to what extent the methods used in the previous research prove the effectiveness of the implemented WHPIs. A systematic review of English-language papers (2000–2020) focused on types of health-promoting interventions in the workplace, and outcomes for employers and employees were conducted using the SCOPUS database (n = 260). As a result, 29 texts qualified for a final qualitative synthesis of the results. The analyses were most frequently conducted in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) based on both quantitative and qualitative methods. In order to draw conclusions, analyses were made by classifying the research presented in the texts according to the type of intervention implemented, classifying the outcomes identified, and indicating the type of evaluation made by the researcher. The analysis showed that most of the outcomes presented refer to changes in the strategy and organizational culture, as well as the behavior of employees. In 18 studies, the indication of outcomes resulted directly from the evaluation outcomes. In other cases, the outcomes were identified by an evaluation of the process or structure of WHPI. The conducted analysis showed significant diversity in terms of the outcomes measured and the research methods used. The quasi-experimental methods, randomly controlled cluster trials, or cross-sectorial studies used in the study to confirm the effectiveness of WHPI were used only in every third study. In these studies, measurements were usually performed twice: at baseline and after intervention. The majority of studies confirmed that WHPIs led to a positive change in the healthy behavior of employees and effected an organizational change, and more rarely led to savings or a reduction in costs resulting from sickness absenteeism, presentism, turnover, etc., and return on investment (ROI). The article shows the need to conduct further research towards the development of guidelines for the evaluation of the effectiveness of implemented programs.

Empirical papers on association between physical activity (PA) and professional burnout (PB) and work-related hazards (WRH) in a population of different working adults are still limited. The aim of this chapter is to characterize the level of habitual physical activity of academics working at higher education institutions of Poland, with particular reference to leisure-time physical activity (LPA). Moreover, the chapter also tries to answer a question whether LPA is an important moderating variable of the relationship between work-related hazards and professional burnout. A quantitative research was carried out from September till December 2017 [N = 340]. The online questionnaire consisted of three research tools: the Psychosocial Risk Scale (SRP), the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory (OLBI), and the International Physical Activity Questionnaires (IPAQ), the long form with demographic characteristics. In the chapter, different statistic tests (the independent-samples t-test, one way-ANOVA, the Mann–Whitney U-test, and Kruskal–Wallis test) and descriptive statistics were included. More than 60% of respondents were classified to the high level of PA according to IPAQ. LPA was declared by 41.8% of academics (vigorous—35.5%, moderate—29.7%, walking—64.5%). To analyze the significance of leisure-time physical activity as a variable moderating the hazards/professional burnout relationship, regression analysis with interaction was conducted. Only in the case of one model referring to the perceived job context-related hazards/exhaustion relationship, statistically significant moderating effect of LTA was found.

Aim: The main aim of this article is to identify negative health consequences resulting from work overload and lack of work-life balance, as well as to present characteristics of positive healthy behaviors in the workplace as counteracting strategies. The paper is a part of the discussion on the concept of corporate wellness which forms the basis for the development of organization’s health culture.Design / Research methods: The paper is based on a review of literature concerned with the factors influencing worker welfare. Moreover, it presents two case studies on comprehensive health programs implemented by Mars Poland and the Belgian branch of Protect & Gamble. Conclusions / findings: Based on the review of foreign and domestic literature, the authors propose a model describing the relationship between individual variables impacting worker welfare. In this model, it is assumed that the interaction between work and life, and workers’ healthy behaviors such as physical activity and rest after work (sleep) are crucial to workers’ regeneration.Originality / value of the article: The value of the paper lies in the interdisciplinary approach to the development of worker well-being. Apart from the perspective of human resources management, the outlined concept also takes into account the issues relating to workers’ mental and physical health.Implications of the research: The theoretical assumptions presented in the paper will become a starting point for a research project to be conducted on Polish enterprises. Its objective will be to identify the possibilities of counteracting the negative effects of workload congestion through the promotion of healthy behaviors in the workplace and support of workers in their creation of a positive work-life interaction.
