Innovations in the modern world are not simply connected with the opportunities of digital technologies but also largely based on them. This is exactly why the full-fledged successive industrial sector's digitization will become a platform for qualitative changes of the economy and long-term opportunities. Thus, the transition to digital technologies is inevitable, but from another perspective, this very transition cannot be the absolute goal. In this chapter, the authors aimed at providing a better understanding for Industry 4.0 concept and its application benefits for Russia. The main problem is how the Russian Federation acts against the economically developed countries, which are the creators of Industry 4.0. This chapter mainly focuses on presenting the authors' views on how to sustain and increase competitive advantage of the Russian Federation by catching and implementing Industry 4.0. With Industry 4.0, Russian Federation gets a bigger share of the world manufacturing value chain.

Despite the prominence of sustainable development approaches in the academic literature, together with the significance attributed to the economy and society, the concept is not sufficiently theorized, especially in terms of methodological issues. The presented study makes a contribution to the academic literature by providing a synthesis on territorial sustainable development research and related concepts of innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystems (EE). We propose a methodological framework for the assessment of regional sustainability, replicating and expanding the approach of D. Isenberg, and draw inference to the impact of institutional environments on the maturity level of EEs. We present our assumptions in the example of two entrepreneurial ecosystems in Russia and Poland (the Penza region and the Małopolska region) with relevant interpretations, which enable us to gain a comprehensive understanding of how to progress in sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystem development. The results of this analysis provides information to help academics, policymakers, government, and business owners with a more in-depth understanding of the practical mechanisms that support absorption of the EE model to achieve Sustainable Development Goals.

The innovation ecosystem concept has been widely used as a framework to explain innovation activities within different industries. Despite the usefulness of this approach, the concept is under-theorized, especially with regard to the methodological issues. This article presents a new approach in assessing the effectiveness of innovation industrial ecosystems, allowing to take into account the peculiarities of the life cycle stages of individual innovative projects and an ecosystem as a whole. We illustrate our assumptions on the example of two industrial ecosystems’ projects assessments with appropriate explanations, which help from the academicians, researchers, and readers to receive a comprehensive understanding on how to form a knowledge-intensive ecosystem project portfolio and make managerial decisions on further actions of ecosystem actors regarding project development. The presented methodology has been tested on the example of projects implemented by research centers and laboratories of National University of Science and Technology (MISIS; Moscow, Russia). The propositions arising from this analysis provide information to help academics, policymakers, government, and individual enterprises with a more adequate understanding of the practical mechanisms and tools that help implement the ecosystem model for industrial development.

The aim of this paper is to address the gap in the academic literature towards the development of methodological approaches to the industrial ecosystem sustainability assessment. This study was focused on the industrial ecosystems formed based on an entropy model and implementing the principles of complex systems. This article systematizes the problem of applying the ecosystem approach to cross-industry interaction. A contribution to the literature was achieved by providing a systemic perspective on the sustainable industrial process. In this paper, we develop the methodological foundations to improve the understanding of integration processes’ influence on the industrial ecosystem potential. For a relevant analysis of industrial ecosystem potential, the existing patterns of system functioning were taken into account, including entropy equilibrium and the Harrington model. We illustrate our assumptions with an empirical case study of the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) “MISIS” ecosystem—“Green technologies for resource conservation” (Russia), with an assessment of ecosystem sustainability through the actors’ collaboration level. The propositions arising from this analysis provide information to help academics, policymakers, government, and individual enterprises with a more adequate understanding of the practical mechanisms and tools that help trigger the self-organization and sustainability of the industrial ecosystems.

This paper highlights a sustainability and self-organization perspective of the innovation ecosystems. Such issues as under what conditions self-organization takes place and what mechanisms form an innovation ecosystem in a sustainable way are underexplored in the academic literature. To ensure self-development of actors in the ecosystem, a self-adjustment mechanism is needed that allows implementation of sustainability principles. This article proposes a practical tool for assessing an actor in an ecosystem using the method of analytic hierarchy process (AHP), developed by T. Saaty. It allows for operationalizing the processes of self-organization in the ecosystem without an external intervention and addresses the main implications for sustainable development of innovation industrial ecosystems. The authors illustrate their assumptions with an empirical case study of the industrial ecosystem “Technologies for Improving the Quality of Life” (Moscow, Russia). The propositions arising from this analysis provide information to help academics, policymakers, government, and individual enterprises with a more adequate understanding of the practical mechanisms and tools that help trigger self-organization and sustainable development of the innovation ecosystems.

The current crisis has indicated the need to review the policy of economic growth and globalization towards the search for new sustainable models of the internal territory development able to resist external shocks and threats. To achieve this goal, it is required both to implement sustainability strategies, and to assess the obtained results towards sustainable development. Despite an abundance of literature on sustainability assessment, there is a lack of understanding of the application of sustainability assessment in regional/local contexts. The purpose of the article is to improve theoretical and methodological aspects of the formation of territorial (regional) ecosystems by developing a new approach to assessing its sustainability. We believe that territorial ecosystem sustainability assessment is possible through the entropy of a complex system composed of the entropies of its constituent ecosystems or the entropies of different types of territorial capital (human, production, natural). An application of the entropy approach allows to understand specific features of a particular ecosystem characteristics. We demonstrate our methodology with two empirical case studies of territorial ecosystems of Penza and Vladimir regions. As a result of the analysis, it was found that ecosystem’s sustainability is achieved, primarily, due to the natural capital of the territory. The methodology proposed in our study aims at ensuring comprehensiveness and robustness of the evaluation supporting the decision-making process.

The aim of this paper is to address the gap in the academic literature towards the development of methodological approaches to the industrial ecosystem potential assessment. This study is focused on the industrial ecosystems formed on the basis of a symbiotic model and implementing the principles of circularity. The article systematizes the problem of using circular and ecosystem approaches in industrial development. A contribution to the literature was achieved by providing a systemic perspective on the sustainable industrial process. In this paper, we develop the methodological foundations to improve the understanding of circular and integration processes’ influence on the industrial ecosystem potential. For a relevant analysis of industrial ecosystem potential, the existing patterns of system functioning were taken into account, including entropy equilibrium and Harrington model. We illustrate our assumptions with an empirical case study of two different industrial ecosystems, Kalundborg Symbiosis and Baltic Industrial Symbiosis, with an assessment of their circular and integration potentials. The results highlight that the potential of Kalundborg Symbiosis in the field of circularity is realized quite productively, but not in full. The holistic knowledge of circularity process provides new information that supports academics, policymakers, government, and individuals with a more appropriate understanding of the conditions that help to eliminate the environmental problems faced in society, helping to achieve the country’s sustainable development goals.

In the article, scenarios of the development of industrial complexes are considered. The methodological principles of synergetic and synergetic modeling in the processes of transformation of the innovation environment for the development of industrial complexes, various basic scenarios of transformation are illustrated. Since the accelerators of the innovation environment for the development of industrial complexes have a certain energy, in the industrial system it is possible to achieve a bifurcation point—a critical state of the system, in which the system becomes unstable with fluctuations and uncertainty arises: whether the state of the system will become chaotic or it will shift to a new, more differentiated and high level of orderliness. The result of the implementation of the bifurcation scenario may be a technological singularity—a hypothetical moment in the future, when technological development will become so rapid that the schedule of technical progress will become almost vertical. Correlated scenarios of the processes of transformation of the innovation environment with scenarios for the development of digitalization in the world and in Russia.

Evaluation of the effectiveness of the application of innovative technologies in industry should be considered in the context of general principles and methods used in the implementation of information technology (IT). The main factors considered in these models can be taken as a basis for deciding on the appropriate level of investments channeled into IT systems to ensure a given level of reliability. The goal is to summarize the concepts and principles underlying these models and describe their common characteristics. Systematization of general models of the value estimation created due to investments into information technologies (IT). The main factors considered in these models are the basis for deciding on the appropriate level of investments in IT to ensure a given level of reliability. The characteristics of the principal types of models are given, which are proposed to be divided into four groups: investment-oriented; cost-oriented; models reflecting environmental factors; quantitative assessment models. It is offered to allocate material and non-material factors of information value formation. The resulting value of the technology under consideration for the whole life cycle is calculated as the sum of the material and non-material values of the components. Estimations have been made and a methodology for calculating the economic gains from the use of innovative technologies is demonstrated using the example of JSC Concern “Sozvezdie” (Voronezh).

The fourth industrial revolution gives hope for continuation of development of human society which has already led to sharp improvement of quality of life of billions of people after 1800. To achieve it, collaboration of a set of interested parties is necessary for performance of three main tasks: it is fair to distribute the benefits from technological breaks, to constrain their inevitable negative effects and to guarantee that new technologies will expand, but not to limit a possibility of all inhabitants of Earth. The fourth industrial revolution represents a new stage in development of humanity. Her base – three previous industrial revolutions, and driving force – the growing availability of the latest technologies. This revolution only begins therefore the mankind can – and is obliged – not only to develop new technologies, but also to create more flexible forms of government and positive values which will change how we live we work and we communicate. Customization, change of balance of forces between the value of experience of certain designers and value of digital models, decentralization of design and production, new requirements to certification – all these changes become a reality of the global competitive industry. Theoretical and practical aspects of development and implementation of the scenario of breakthrough technological development of the industrial enterprises in the conditions of the Fourth industrial revolution are presented in article. The characteristic and distinctive features of the Fourth industrial revolution is considered on the basis of what the conclusion is drawn that breakthrough technological development can give huge advantages to economy and society. When developing the scenario of technological breakthrough by authors it is offered to use bilateral approach which it is possible to call the strategy of scaling (zoom-in, zoomout). The most perspective directions which the industrial enterprises need to develop for implementation of the scenario of digital transformation today are allocated.
