The role of a forest sector in the transition to a circular economy (CE) is critical. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to summarize the main findings of the most important published articles and to provide insights on the interdisciplinary space at the interface of concepts related to a forest-based CE. Moreover, it attempts to assess the challenges raised from adopting the CE in forest sector. Through a systematic literature review, 69 scientific publications were selected and evaluated by two sights: (i) a descriptive analysis and (ii) a cluster analysis of the keywords related to the forest-based CE. The study highlights the need for additional survey on optimizing the interaction between forest ecosystem services and circular economy. Further discussion is also needed about the relations of the key factors associated with the forest-based circular economy, as they emerged from the cluster analysis and the co-occurrence network map.

Technological advances result in new traceability configurations that, however, cannot always secure transparency and food safety. Even in cases where a system guarantees transparency, the actual consumer involvement and a real consumer-based perspective cannot always be ensured. The importance of such consumer centricity is vital, since it is strongly associated with effective supply chains that properly fulfil their end-users’ needs and requests. Thus, the objective of this paper was to explore the level of consumer centricity in food supply chains under a traceability system. The methodological approach employed a framework of two studies validating subsequently a similar set of variables, using initially consumers data and then supply chain actors data. The supply chain of sustainable tomato was selected to design the studies. The level of agreement between datasets suggested the level of the supply chain consumer centricity. Findings showed health, trust, quality, nutrition, and safety-related values to be significant for the consumers towards accepting a traceability system. The supply chain actors also accepted a traceability system based on the fact that their customers’ needs rely on the exact same beliefs, indicating a high level of consumer centricity. The current work underlines the magnitude of consumer centricity in food supply chains and provides an easy and straightforward framework for its exploration. Key implications suggest the design of more effective supply chain and consumer-based strategies for the food industry. Policymakers could also adopt the concept of consumer centricity to further improve the food industry.

Agriculture is highly dependent on climate change, and Cyprus especially is experiencing its impacts on agricultural production to a greater extent, mainly due to its geographical location. The adaptation of farming to the effects of global climate change may lead to the maximization of agricultural production, which is an important and desirable improvement. The main aim of this paper is to rank and quantify the impacts of climate change on the agricultural sector of Cyprus, through a multi-round Delphi survey seeking a consensus agreement in a group of experts. A multidisciplinary group of 20 experts stated their willingness-to-pay for various impacts of climate change. By applying this method, the individual impacts of climate change on crop production and water resources were brought into the modeling effort on equal footing with cost values. The final cost impact estimate represents the total estimated cost of climate change in the agricultural sector. According to the results, this cost reaches EUR 25.08 million annually for the agricultural sector, and EUR 366.48 million for the whole country. Therefore, it is expected that in the seven-year programming period 2014–2020 the total cost of climate change on agriculture ranges from EUR 176 to EUR 2565 million. The most significant impacts are due to the increasing level of CO2 in the atmosphere and the burden of biodiversity and ecosystems.

Sustainable food supply chains are complex systems involving several stakeholders, processes, flow of goods/materials and information. The value generated in combination with the contradictory agendas among actors makes any groundwork for future research a challenging endeavor. Hence, an end-to-end mapping of the food supply chain under examination is a vital prerequisite for the design of a comprehensive research framework. This study exemplified such a mapping approach in the Greek sustainable tomato supply chain, providing significant insights for an impactful research agenda. Data were obtained from secondary sectoral sources and open interviews with key players across the supply chain—covering all its main stages, i.e., production, packaging, storing, transportation, wholesaling, and retailing. The findings are summarized in three supply chain maps that illustrate the areas concerning sustainability, value chain and stakeholders. These maps synthesize a bigger picture of the supply chain that reveals the complicated interactions among its actors, the hidden bottlenecks in the flow of information and the areas that need deeper exploration. Its fundamental implication is the design of a targeted research framework, underlying the main priorities of the Greek tomato supply chain and eventually the Greek agri-food sector.

Agricultural extension is the application of scientific knowledge to agricultural practices through farmer education including rules for pitching and public speaking how to approach farmers. In this course three main objectives will be presented: a) communication with farmers, b) social leadership in rural areas and c) cooperative actions and leading agricultural units. In the first objective will be included the communication theory, model, channels & extension methods. In the second objective will be included the typology of opinion leaders, who to define them and how to take advantage of their leadership. Finally, in the third objective will be included the importance of cooperative actions and units and a study case on how to lead an agricultural association /cooperation.

The present study attempts to estimate individuals’ willingness to pay for recycled water irrigation, in order to enhance the water supply and ensure the continuation of irrigated agriculture in Nestos catchment. Contingent valuation method has been developed for the investigation of farmers’ preferences, in monetary terms, to adopt this alternative water source for irrigation purposes. The applied method is regularly followed in the framework of environmental valuation. The results of the survey are based on data collected from questionnaires, which were answered by respondents at a river basin scale. In a representative sample of 302 farmers, we find that 64.2% of them expressed a positive stance towards using recycled water, a fact that results in lower environmental impacts. However, findings indicate that participants are willing to pay a significantly less amount of money than they already pay, for freshwater. Additionally, the analysis demonstrates that the use of recycled water in agriculture is more acceptable to respondents who are aware of its environmental benefits. Therefore, the provision of complete information on the welfare of using recycled water for irrigation to farmers may lead to greater adoption intention and a greater environmental benefit.

The irrigation sector in Greece has been recognized as the major consumer of water and, at the same time, a precondition of agricultural production. Impacts of agricultural practices on water quality and quantity are many and varied. This paper proposes a typology approach of irrigation water management problems in Nestos river basin, North Greece. A novel quantitative SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis is recommended for identifying the internal and external factors that influence the irrigation sector. Specifically, a double-round Delphi-type interactive survey method has been employed to rank and quantify environmental impacts of water use in agriculture sector, according to the literature, as well as a previous qualitative research conducted in the region. An independent group comprised of 20 experts engaged in irrigation water issues (academics, policy directors, business executives, and selected farmers) was invited to asses and rank all factors, identified by the SWOT. After experts’ ranking, they were invited, in a second round, to propose potential policy implications for the major weaknesses and threats which emerged from the SWOT analysis. The results from this approach could be a tool for assisting the formulation of strategy in water management sector.

The main aim of this paper was to investigate factors affecting the adoption of pressurized irrigation technology among Roudbar County olive farmers by path-structural modeling and Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology. Data were collected through an information technology questionnaire addressing a cross section of 210 managers of olive farms (4.18% of the statistical population) in the Roudbar County, Northern Iran. Validity of the questionnaire was proofed using several tests (content, face, convergent and discriminant). Likewise, reliability of the questionnaire was tested employing principal component analysis, Cronbach’s alpha, Dillon–Goldstein’s ʃ and reagent stability. Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis of the data was accomplished using SPSSV19 and SmartPLSV3 software. For testing hypotheses, structural equation model and partial least squares that focus on reagent variance were used. Results show a significant relationship between: (a) performance expectancy and behavioral intention, (b) social influence and behavioral intention, (c) facilitating conditions and use behavior. A significant relationship was also observed between intention to use and use behavior of pressurized irrigation technology. The employed model explains 72% of behavioral intention variance and 42% of use behavior of pressurized irrigation technology variance among olive farmers. To increase willingness to accept technology among Roudbar County olive farmers, it is suggested to hold extension and education courses by organizations for raising knowledge and awareness of pressurized irrigation technology. Also, olive farmers can be provided with financial resources and knowledge to enable them to adopt this new irrigation technology.

Acknowledging the importance of water resources protection and sustainable management, the European Parliament enacted directives based on the “polluter-pays” principle aiming for “environmental damage” protection and restoration of water resources. The main aim of this paper is to examine, for the first time in Greece, the possibility of achieving environmental goals, such as reduction of agrochemical pollution and irrigation water use, alongside with the farmers’ willingness to undertake the environmental costs arising from their activity. In a questionnaire survey, conducted using a “state preference” method, participants were asked to respond on whether they are willing to absorb an “environmental charge” for the protection and restoration of surface and ground water. It is an essential precondition to understand the factors that affect taxpayers’ willingness to participate in the Water Framework Directive, as they are expected to cover the cost of its implementation. The identification of the driving forces that affect stakeholders’ environmental decisions can emerge as an important and useful tool in extending public participation in the Water Framework Directive.

Poultry sector in Balkan countries presents a significant dynamic in both terms of consumption and production. Even if small-scale poultry production in farmers’ backyards is very common in all Balkan countries, modern and industrialized poultry farming facilities have been developed to confront the increasing demand for poultry products. On the other hand, there are many studies that associate business performance to job satisfaction for employees and workers. Thus, it is worth examining job satisfaction and the factors that determine the derived satisfaction as a first step to study poultry sector and its contribution to food and beverage sector. In this study job satisfaction is examined for workers in a Greek poultry cooperative, since agricultural poultry cooperatives in Greece perform better than other sectors. In addition, the largest agricultural cooperative in Greece is a poultry cooperative that has a 30% market share. A similar situation is observed for many Balkan countries. In order to examine job satisfaction, a questionnaire was developed based on the well-established questionnaires “Job Satisfaction Survey” and “Job Descriptive Index” in order to evaluate workers’ overall satisfaction. The survey took place in a medium-sized poultry cooperative located in Epirus, Greece, with more than 300 employees and workers. However, only workers in the production line were selected to participate in the survey excluding desk officers, salesmen, and workers in the logistics of the cooperative. As a result, about 90 fully completed questionnaires were returned representing more than 1/3 of the total workers of the cooperative. The first results of the study through a regression analysis indicate that two groups of characteristics affect workers’ satisfaction: the relationships among workers and the personal opportunities for development and recognition. Moreover, workers’ educational level seems to affect the perceived satisfaction for workers. This study could provide to poultry cooperatives’ managers, in practical terms, specific directions that can be used in motivating workers to be engaged with the cooperative business and increase their satisfaction, and even more this study could be used to investigate further if job satisfaction could lead in better business performance for the poultry sector.

Water allocation to crops, and especially to the most water intensive ones, has always been of great importance in agricultural processes. Deficit or excessive irrigation could create either crop health-related problems or water over-consumption, respectively. The latter could lead to groundwater depletion and deterioration of its quality through deep percolation of agrichemical residuals. In this context, and under the current conditions where Cyprus is facing effects of possible climate changes, the purpose of this study seeks to estimate the needed crop water requirements of the past (1995–2004) and the corresponding ones of the present (2005–2015) in order to test if there were any significant changes regarding the crop water requirements of the most water-intensive trees in Cyprus. The Mediterranean region has been identified as the region that will suffer the most from variations of climate. Thus the paper refers to effects of these variations on crop evapotranspiration (ETc) using remotely-sensed data from Landsat TM/ETM+/OLI employing a sound methodology used worldwide, the Surface Energy Balance Algorithm for Land (SEBAL). Though the general feeling is that of changes on climate will consequently affect ETc, our results indicate that there is no significant effect of climate variation on crop evapotranspiration, despite the fact that some climatic factors have changed. Applying Student’s t-test, the mean values for the most water-intensive trees in Cyprus of the 1994–2004 decade have shown no statistical difference from the mean values of 2005–2015 for all the cases, concluding that the climate change taking place in the past decades in Cyprus have either not affected the crop evapotranspiration or the crops have managed to adapt to the new environmental conditions through time.

Precipitation and temperature variability present significant agricultural risks worldwide. Northern Iran’s agriculture mainly depends on paddy fields, which are directly affected by precipitation and temperature variability. The main aim of this study is to explore farmers’ attitudes towards precipitation and temperature variability and their adaptation strategies in paddy fields in a typical agricultural province in northern Iran. Primary survey data were collected from a sample of 382 paddy farmers of Rasht County in Guilan Province. Data have been analyzed using both summary statistics and bivariate analysis (Pearson, Spearman, and Eta correlation coefficients). Empirical findings reveal that most paddy farmers had experienced precipitation and temperature variability and were taking measures to reduce its negative impacts on their crops. Results also indicate that farm size and household income influence farmers’ perception to precipitation and temperature variability, while availability of water resources also influence farmers’ adaptation decisions.

The objective of this paper was to identify the factors affecting rice growers’ attitudes and practices towards water and soil conservation in the Fumanat Plain of Guilan Province, Iran. Data were collected through a survey questionnaire addressing a cross section of 400 rice growers of the Fumanat Plain in four districts. Data were analyzed using both summary statistics and multivariate statistical procedures while content validity of the statements was first determined by a group of experts of water and soil conservation. It was found that more than 23% of the variance of attitudes towards water and soil conservation could be determined by a linear combination of variables included in a regression equation. Identifying the factors affecting rice growers’ attitudes is suggested as a way of integrating rice cultivation into rural development. From a practical point of view, the above mentioned implications are of great importance generally for society, policy makers and related economic sectors

Greece is facing a severe economic crisis that has also been perceived as a crisis of human values, ideology and on parallel a crisis of trust in people and institutions. The role of trust (both individual and institutional) has been highlighted within the social capital literature as a factor of growth and prosperity of societies; especially in terms of adaptability to volatile conditions where the need for cooperation in order to achieve common goals is of great importance. At the same time, much has been written about the existence of higher levels of social capital in closed societies such as rural ones when compared to urban. The main aim of this paper is to investigate the relation of trust and solidarity, between urban and rural areas in Northern Greece, using empirical research to a large sample of 503 residents. Research results lead to the segmentation need of the population into three distinct clusters with respect to different levels of social capital within different rural–urban context. The main policy implication would be whether the increase in social capital could be a tool for “survival” in the current economic crisis in Greece and at the European level.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to reveal the dynamics of the Greek energy sector. As energy sectors contribute substantially to a national economy and stimulate national output and employment, it is important to identify their upward and downward linkages and interrelations with the other sectors of the economy. Design/methodology/approach To do this and capture such relations in the economy, a general equilibrium model is used. In specific, input–output (I–O) analysis is used and a model is specifically built for the Greek economy to examine in detail the energy sectors. Multiplier and linkage analysis is performed to assess their dynamics in terms of output, household income and employment. Findings Results indicate that the three energy sectors’ multipliers and elasticities, though are not ranking in the first places, are enough high indicating their strong linkages in the economy and their potentials to enhance the economy’s total output, employment and household income. Research limitations/implications Further disaggregation of the economy’s energy sectors is needed to make clearer the separation among renewable and non-renewable sector, to identify and compare the dynamics and contribution of each category in the economy. Additionally, an environmental I–O model would indicate consequences on the environment and not just pure economic benefits. Practical implications Through the analysis, it can be seen that energy sectors and secondary energy products have the ability to drive a country’s economic activity through exports and intersectoral linkages, even if it is not a crude petroleum producing economy. Thus, knowledge of the economic impacts of such sectors is a valuable information. Originality/value The current study provides significant information of an economy’s energy sectors regarding their ability to support economic activity and employment. A general equilibrium model is used, examining the whole economy, to assess direct and indirect interrelationships.
