Major elaborations on sustainable development relating to the general economic sphere of various issue-related areas. Surprisingly little explicit guidance presenting this topic from the organizational side exists. To fill this gap, this paper attempts to propose and verify the concept of a sustainable approach to IT project management by involving the client at the stage of choosing the project management methodology. The research scope constitute IT projects, the subject of which was the development of software commissioned by the organization. The study aims to assess how the internal perspective of sustainability in IT projects, manifested in the matching of IT project management methodology to the client, affects the overall client’s satisfaction with the IT project, its products, and results. In the study, 64 IT projects implemented in Polish SME organizations were analyzed throughout their life cycle. The study has proved that introducing and improving the internal perspective of sustainability in IT projects, by matching an IT project management methodology to the client type is one of the key factors determining the level of client satisfaction and thus the assessment of the project’s success. The evaluation was made using the Servperv method by developing a measurement instrument dedicated to the IT project management area. Researches can use the proposed approach and the Servperv measuring tool to carry out similar analyses with different sample groups across other countries. The software industry can find results valuable and useful with regard to the IT project management improvement.

The article has been inspired by over a decade of the author’s studies concerning the reasons for failures of IT projects. The studies were based on both the author’s own research projects and a systematic review of reports and literature on the topic. As the success rate of IT projects and of the use of IT system functionalities within organizations is rather low, it appears worthwhile to undertake a multifaceted search for the causes of this phenomenon and for the opportunities to improve the situation. Being a method of systematic problem solving correlated with innovation, TRIZ addresses both these issues. The present article discusses the arguments for the implementation of TRIZ in IT projects and the benefits thereof. Moreover, it presents the IT TRIZ solution as an opportunity to enhance the effectiveness of IT projects—the IT project implementation path with inherent modifications of business processes and the TRIZ-supported creation of an IT system for seamless operations of the organization.

Obecnie obserwuje się ciągły wzrost nakładów organizacji na projekty IT. W opozycji do tego wzrostu przedstawiają się wyniki badań dotyczące powodzenia projektów IT. Mimo dopracowanych metodyk zarządzania projektami IT, specjalistycznych narzędzi i technologii oraz coraz większego doświadczenia zespołów IT w tym zakresie, nadal odnotowuje się zbyt niski odsetek projektów IT zakończonych pełnym sukcesem. Metodyka wyznacza reguły i sposób współpracy z klientem, a stopień jej dopasowania do rodzaju klienta w dużej mierze decyduje o jej efektywności w projektach IT. Opracowanie ukazuje zarówno model, autorskie narzędzia, schemat badawczy, jak i ocenę możliwości doboru na ich podstawie metodyki realizacji projektu IT do rodzaju klienta. Artykuł niniejsze stanowi kolejny etap badań w zakresie efektywnej realizacji projektów IT.
