The reported research aims at improving the quality of three-phase rectifier supply currents. An effective method consists of adding properly formed booster voltages to the fundamental supply voltages using a series active filter. In the proposed solution, the booster voltages are generated by three single-phase systems consisting of inverters, LC filters, and single-phase transformers. The application of LC couplings ensures low emission of disturbances, but may provoke compensator stability problems. The article presents the current control system for a series active filter designed to suppress the dominant harmonics in the supply currents of an 18-pulse rectifier, without interference into fundamental current components. A proportional control is proposed in combination with integral terms implemented in the orthogonal coordinate systems, which synchronically rotate with frequencies equal to those of the harmonic components to be eliminated. The use of complex gains in integral terms allows a simple phase correction of the output signals. A description is given of the method to determine controller parameters based on the mathematical model of the control object. Sample results of experimental tests performed in steady-state and transient conditions are included to illustrate the quality of performance of the series active filter as compared to the results recorded for the rectifier alone, and for the rectifier with additional line reactor. The applied control method of active filter significantly reduces harmonic distortion of the grid current, which is particularly advantageous at nonideal supply voltage and low loads.

The new technology of wide band gap semiconductors is said to outperform up-to-date silicon devices. High voltage Gallium Nitride (GaN) transistors, now emerging in the market, have even three times shorter switching times and even four times smaller energy losses compared to the best in-class Si devices. In this paper the performance of a 650 V GaN SSFET is evaluated and compared with the newest silicon family of CoolMOS™ technology. Switching times of transistors are measured in a double-pulse test. Moreover, a prototype buck converter is built with two kinds of transistors. In this setup efficiencies are experimentally measured and compared. It is proved that application with SSFETs allows ease of operation and reduced power losses. Finally, the benefits of achieving high switching frequency (500 kHz) when it comes to a reduction of an inductor in an output filter are described.

The paper presents the control system and selected results of experimental tests of the ac/dc power converter consisting of 18-pulse diode rectifier on the basis of coupled reactors and a serial active power filter. Three configurations of the 150kVA converter were tested experimentally and compared: 18-pulse diode rectifier with and without additional grid reactor and the rectifier integrated with the active power filter. The applied control method of active filter significantly reduces the grid current harmonic distortion and unbalance, which is particularly advantageous at low loads and non-ideal supply voltage.

The paper presents a comprehensive approach to the compensation of grid current distortion in shunt active power filter systems. Four sources of current distortion are addressed: imperfect grid synchronization caused by the distortion in the grid voltages, time delays in the evaluation of grid voltages and computation of compensating currents, fluctuations of the dc bus voltage, and the distortion of inverter output voltages due to dead-time effects and related factors. The focus of the paper is on the assessment of the significance of the proposed improvements in the control algorithm for the reduction of harmonic distortion of grid currents.

A simple model is derived and verified for evaluating the effect of parasitic capacitances on the dead-time related voltage distortion in multilevel NPC voltage source inverters. The model permits well-defined and precise compensation of dead-time distortion, exhibiting meaningful improvement on compensation methods neglecting the effects of parasitic capacitances. A simple formula is given for evaluating the capacitances as serial/parallel connections of transistor capacitances and external capacitances (introduced by the cables and load).

The aim of this paper is to present the method of sensorless startup of super high speed permanent magnet motor. Two types of control methods are taken into consideration. In the first part of the startup the current mode as a control strategy was used. In this article the mode of switching the control strategies from the current mode to the vector control is proposed. The extended Kalman filter (EKF) and the unscented Kalman filter (UKF) were used in the vector control for angular velocity estimation. There is also presented the influence of accuracy of the voltage distortion compensation on the control quality.

A method is presented and discussed whereby to evaluate two basic diagnostic variables that can be used in the assessment of the health of high-power IGBT packs. The proposed approach attempts to adapt a laboratory-grade method known from the literature for the use on board electric traction vehicles. The diagnostic variables in question are the junction-to-case thermal resistance and the collector-emitter saturation voltage. These variables can be used in the assessment of the depth of IGBT structure delamination and wire-bond lift-off. The proposed approach has been partially validated by experiment.

A novel method is presented for the detection and isolation of open-transistor faults in voltage-source inverters feeding AC motors. The method is an extension of the normalized DC-components method. The normalized average currents are combined with additional diagnostic variables which convey information about the percentage of time spent by the phase currents in the near-zero zone. The combined diagnostic signals permit much more robust diagnostics of single-transistor faults and make feasible the diagnostics of multiple-transistor faults. Suggested in this paper is also an alternative solution for the normalization of DC components, which is easier interpreted and simpler to implement.
