One of the most important parameters that characterize the traction-coupling properties of a wheeled tractor is its slip. The more tractor’s gross traction exists, the higher its traction-coupling properties are. However, this gross traction should not exceed its maximum possible value, which, in turn out, is to be determined by the maximum permissible slip, δmax. This article provides the equation to calculate this crucial parameter and establishes the dependencies between the tractor’s slip and soil structure coefficient. It was shown that the value of δmax basically depends on such soil characteristics as the bulk deformation coefficient and the coefficient of rolling resistance. Calculations showed that, for the average value of the soil bulk deformation coefficient at 4000 kN·m3, the average value of rolling resistance coefficient at 0.16, and the ratio value of the maximum permissible soil pressure to the tractor wheel rolling radius at 222 kPa·m1, the maximum permitted amount slip of the tractor wheels should not exceed 15%. With more slip, the soil structure deteriorates significantly. In this case, its structure coefficient may be less than critical, equal to 0.4.

Movement of bridge agricultural equipment along the permanent traffic lanes is characterised by significant energy costs for overcoming the rolling resistance forces. Until now, the movement process of bridge agricultural equipment wheels along the compacted soil of permanent traffic lanes has been paid only a little attention. It has been established that the physical and mechanical properties of soil lanes significantly affect the energy consumption necessary for overcoming the rolling resistance of forces of bridge agricultural equipment wheels. Considering the range of possible changes in these properties, the coefficient of rolling resistance of equipment wheels varies from 0.06 to 0.1, which is 66%. In order to reduce the rolling resistance coefficient of equipment wheels when moving along the permanent traffic lanes, the surface needs to be undeformable. When moving along such a solid and dense supporting surface, the wheel rolling resistance is lowest.

The article presents research results of a machine-tractor unit that performs two technological operations simultaneously: (i) chopping plant residues (sunflower stubble); (ii) covering the chopped stubble with the soil. The first operation is carried out with a front-mounted plant residues chopper, and the second one is carried out with a rear-mounted plough. The chopper’s working devices are rotated by the tractor’s front power take-off (PTO), which has two operating modes: 540 and 1000 rpm. It was determined that to reduce the dynamic load in the drive of the chopper’s plant residues working devices, to chop these residues qualitatively, and then to cover them with the soil, the tractor’s front PTO should be adjusted to a speed of 1000 rpm. With this mode of the chopper’s working device’s rotation, the difference in its vertical vibrations’ dispersion and the tractor front axle’s oscillations is insignificant. The variance of the plowing depth vibrations (1.44 cm2), changing aperiodically in the frequency range of 0–2.5 Hz, is not accidentally less than the variance of irregularities vibrations of the longitudinal field profile (2.75 cm2). The plough draft resistant oscillations of the plow-chopping unit had the least impaction at the plowing depth oscillations. The proof of this is the small value of the cross correlation function; for such oscillating processes as ‘plough draft resistance—plowing depth’, it was equal to 0.22, which is 3.4 times less than for oscillating processes ‘surface’s longitudinal profile—plowing depth’. The number of chopped particles less than 15 cm in length increased by 1.5 times, and the number of particles longer than 30 cm decreased by 3 times. With the complete incorporation of plant residues into the soil, their non-chopped part did not exceed 1%.

Sustainability in the agricultural field suggests the conservation and maintenance of a natural environment of soil. Nevertheless, in the potato production chain, the mechanized harvest is carried out with the concurring removal of impurities and fertile soil. The authors have developed a new spiral potato cleaner which is able to capture and efficiently remove soil lumps of various sizes and shapes, as well as various plant residues. Theoretical and experimental studies have been performed on this soil clod cleaner to determine the structural and kinematic parameters that provide efficient capturing, motion and sifting down of the soil, through the gaps between the helices of its cleaning spirals. An analytical description of the motion of the clod of soil has been made and a system of differential equations has been compiled, whose numerical solution made it possible to determine the indicated reasonable operative parameters of the developed spiral potato cleaner. The results of the experimental research confirmed those ones obtained through the numerical solution of the mathematical model, i.e., rational angular speed ω of the rotation of the spirals from 20.0 to 30.0 rad s−1 and the radius R of spirals between 0.12 and 0.15 m.

The use of centrifugal disk fertilizer spreaders, the axes of which are set obliquely, in the technological process of mineral fertilizers provides an increase indicators characterizing the spreading of technological material in the direction of its scattering, at a greater distance than fertilizer spreaders with vertical axis of rotation. Thus, the hypothesis of the possibility of increasing the working width of the machine for applying mineral fertilizers by equipping such machines with centrifugal disk fertilizer spreaders, the axes of which are set at an angle, is confirmed. Experimental research was conducted using the developed methods and current state standards, regression analysis, statistical methods of processing research results, standard and specially designed experimental equipment. The calculations were performed using the software environment Microsoft Office Excel 2007. As a result of experimental researches it is established that the centrifugal disk fertilizer spreaders which axis is placed inclined, reliably provides performance of technological process at change of frequency of rotation of its disk from 600 to 1000 rpm and changing the angle of installation of the disk to the horizon from 0o to 30o. For all studied kinematic modes of operation of the new working body, the effective scattering range of mineral fertilizers and the distance from it to the tray with the maximum share of the mass of sown fertilizer increase most rapidly with increasing disk angle to the horizontal plane from 0o to 10o, and least when changing the angle within 20o - 30o. The best indicators of fertilizer application both in terms of working width of capture and in terms of uneven application of fertilizers are provided at the angle of inclination of the disk of the new working body to the horizontal plane within 25o-30o.

The new machine-and-tractor aggregate of a modular type, developed by us, consisting of the power and the technological modules, can significantly increase the efficiency of using the tractor when it is aggregated with a five-body plough. The new design solution for connecting these modules in a horizontal plane through a damper, consisting of a hydraulic cylinder and a throttle, allows significant increasing of the movement stability of this aggregate in a transverse-horizontal plane. To test the efficient operation of the proposed design, as well as to determine the kinematic and design parameters that provide the required level of stable movement of this modular machine-and-tractor aggregate, we carried out theoretical and experimental field investigations. For this, a new mathematical model of plane-parallel movement of the machine-and-tractor aggregate of this type was built. It was found that a change in the operating speed of this aggregate during ploughing from 1.0 to 3.0 m∙s−1 does not lead to a deterioration in the stability of the movement of either the technological or, especially, the power modules. The delay in the reaction of the power module of the machine-and-tractor aggregate of the modular type is practically invariant with respect to the change in the mode of movement of this aggregate within the range 1–3 m∙s−1. It was also found that the values of the tire slip resistance coefficients of the wheels of the power module do not have a noticeable impact upon the development of fluctuations of the disturbing moment.

Sugar beet is an extensive crop of great agronomic value with significant productive and economic returns and Ukraine’s sugar beet accounts for about 5.1% of the overall world production. Sugar beets and the by-products resulting from its manufacturing transformation are a significant renewable energy resource. A new high-quality performance prototype of a sugar beet top harvester, front mounted on a tractor, was built by the authors in Ukraine. The aim of this study is to evaluate the main performance parameters related to the operation of this new machine. Field tests were carried out linking the prototype to a wheel tractor, whilst suitable sensors measured the significant kinematic and dynamic parameters, allowing experimental data collection to assess the machine’s performance parameters. The entire technological process of harvesting and transporting the beet tops to the beet top storage unit required power ranging from 6.42 to 17.65 kW. At the topmost tested forward speed, the required tractor traction force was less than 1.9 kN with the power required by the shaft that drives the screw conveyor ranging from 3.1 to 4.6 kW. This value was the lowest for a speed of the tractor–beet top harvesting machine aggregate ranging from 0.9 to 1.2 m · s − 1 .

The European Directive concerning pesticide sustainable use establishes regulations to reduce the environmental drift throughout treatments to agricultural crops, particularly in nearby sensitive areas, such as water bodies, natural reserves and urban areas. The drift represents the fraction of mixture delivered by the sprayer that is not caught by the crop, and is the clearest cause of environmental pollution. Anti-drift nozzles are usually employed, and buffer zones are also maintained along the edges of the sprayed field to reduce drift production. The aim of this work was the theoretical study of the motion of the spray droplets delivered by a nozzle, dipped in downwards and/or lateral forced air flows. A mathematical model has been developed, consisting of a system of 2nd order differential equations, to simulate the motion of water droplets of different diameters within simultaneous different directions of air flow. The graphs, obtained by means of the numerical solution of the model, allow us to analyze the level of the droplets’ drift, according to their diameter and to the speed of the lateral and the downward air flows, respectively. A lateral airflow at a speed of 5 m · s − 1 produced a drift in its direction until 1.70 m for droplets from 100 to 500 μm in diameter. For larger drops, the impact of the downward airflow is not very significant. The results obtained by the numerical solution of the mathematical model have been compared with the results of experimental tests carried out to evaluate the drift of spray produced by different nozzles.
