Sources such as solar and wind energy are intermittent, and this is seen as a barrier to their wide utilization. The increasing grid integration of intermittent renewable energy sources generation significantly changes the scenario of distribution grid operations. Such operational challenges are minimized by the incorporation of the energy storage system, which plays an important role in improving the stability and the reliability of the grid. This study provides the review of the state-of-the-art in the literature on the economic analysis of battery energy storage systems. The paper makes evident the growing interest of batteries as energy storage systems to improve techno-economic viability of renewable energy systems; provides a comprehensive overview of key methodological possibilities for researchers interested in economic analysis of battery energy storage systems; indicates the need to use adequate economic indicators for investment decisions; and identifies key research topics of the analyzed literature: (i) photovoltaic systems with battery energy storage systems for residential areas, (ii) comparison between energy storage technologies, (iii) power quality improvement. The last key contribution is the proposed research agenda.

Work is a major issue in the discussions on the Covid‐19 pandemic, whose consequences impair the capacities of workers at all organizational levels and impose unexpected challenges on managers. Nevertheless, the scientific literature still lacks an overview of how researchers have been covering the issue. This article presents a systematic review to investigate the impact of Covid‐19 on work and workers of all occupations, reveal research gaps, and help managers to adapt to organizations amid the pandemic. This review is based on a sample of 258 papers from Web of Science and Scopus databases. Quantitative and qualitative analysis indicated a vast majority of studies focused on frontline healthcare workers and a lack of empirical investigation on managers' work. We show how literature has been addressing different aspects of work (e.g., workers' health, working conditions, procedures, protection equipment, remote working, etc.) in the various economic sectors. We discuss the results in light of ergonomics and psychodynamics of work, two disciplines that conceive work and organization as intimately connected, and that can assist managers in meeting the difficulties brought by the pandemic. We highlight that considering the construction of health, interindividual variability, subjective relation to work, supportive workplace environment, and organizational and individual capabilities can play a key role in successfully adapting and transforming organizations in the current scenario.

Despite previous research in the literature indicating the relationship between corporate sustainability, organizational capabilities and industrial clusters, this interconnection has not yet been satisfactorily explored and requires further investigation. Therefore, this paper proposes a theoretical framework that relates five cluster characteristics (CC) in developing seven Organizational Capabilities for Sustainability (OCS), which are identified in the literature review. To refine the theoretical framework, seven companies were inserted in a Brazilian footwear cluster. Out of the 29 proposed relationships in the theoretical framework, 16 were evidenced and they generated our research propositions. This study primarily expands the literature by providing theoretical and empirical evidence for the role that clusters can have in enabling companies to develop OCS and in turn improve their corporate sustainability.

Despite indications in the literature about the existence of win-win business opportunities regarding sustainability, most companies are still producing limited social and environmental results that are disconnected from their value propositions. Studies on the rationales underlying decisions regarding sustainability can offer a better understanding of this challenge. In particular, substantive rationality suggests that the decision-making process consider collective values for sustainability. This study investigates the following research question: What are the main challenges of making business decisions based on moral values of sustainable development? Using strategic decisions as a unit of analysis, action research in a start-up environment identified the following business challenges: (1) recognizing the limits of applying the moral values of sustainable development to the current business context dominated by maximization of economic and financial benefit values; (2) recognizing the normative nature of sustainability goals, which implies that moral values related to sustainable development are still external and not naturally occurring in people’s personal moral values; (3) addressing conflicts between moral and benefit values and between collective and individual goals when including substantive rationality in business decisions; (4) engaging business stakeholders according to their personal moral values, as people are value driven; and (5) engaging workers in sustainable development values, as they play a central role in enabling benefit value creation for sustainable development. The paper offers interesting insights into moral value and benefit value. The former is the basis for individual decisions, while the latter represents benefits created by business models. Both concepts have been separately investigated, but this research delimits and differentiates them. Future studies can further investigate decision rationalities to enable sustainability in practice, as this is usually a theoretical discussion. Research on other start-ups and more mature organizations can also provide interesting insights.

This paper attempts to contribute to a deeper understanding of the concept of Collaborative Capability for Sustainability (CCS) by providing an overview of the academic literature on this topic and the delimitation of associated attributes. This was carried out through a systematic literature review (SLR). Thereby, the following specific goals were outlined: (i) to provide an overview of the literature on CCS; (ii) to propose an integrative framework of CCS attributes to reinforce sustainable strategies and relational rents; (iii) to propose a research agenda for the CCS. As collaborative capability is considered dynamic, we found that the term that best summarizes the idea of the firm’s capability of developing interorganizational collaboration to improve corporate sustainability performance is the expression "collaborative capability for sustainability - CCS ". By thoroughly analysing the papers, we identified ten attributes for CCS and their relations with sustainability issues. We also verified that the sources of relational rents could be obtained through CCS developed to achieve sustainability challenges. Based on this, we propose the framework to integrate these results and demonstrate that companies seeking to improve their economic, environmental, and social performance can develop and further explore ten core CCS attributes to implement NRBV strategies, as well as achieve relational rents. Based on results, we propose a research agenda composed of five issues: research method, type network, research focus, NRBV strategies, and impact of CCS on sustainability.

This article presents the results of an academic research project connecting the discipline of ergonomics (and work-related issues) with the theme of sustainability. Despite the stated aim of creating value for stakeholders, including employees, companies face difficulties in introducing effective sustainability policies. The research question addressed in this article is the following: How can companies improve their decision-making processes to increase workers' wellbeing using policies integrating issues related to corporate sustainability and ergonomics? Currently, corporate sustainability is focused mainly on the triple bottom line (TBL) concept. In this context, the integration of ergonomics is fragmented and arguably separate from strategic human-resource functions (which have largely been the primary promoter of the internal-social component of corporate sustainability). This research argues that corporate sustainability requires a new step, improving the decision-making process, with the inclusion of more types of rationalities and the recognition of the centrality of workers in the process of creating sustainable action. When corporate sustainability policies focus on worker centrality, they open space for the integration of ergonomics as a pillar of an organization's corporate sustainability strategy. Based on a complex view of work systems, ergonomics can introduce values aligned with sustainability and promote cooperation in organizations. Different stakeholders working at companies can make use of different concepts proposed by ergonomics and other work sciences to support changes in their decision-making processes. In view of broader sustainability objectives, integrating different work-related considerations can help improve performance, including productivity, quality and health.

This research relates the theme of corporate sustainability to organizational capabilities from business strategy. The literature brings initial indications on the contribution of strategic organizational capabilities to corporate sustainability. However, these attempts are still incipient and non-structured. Thus, in order to explore different organizational capabilities that companies can develop to obtain sustainability benefits, this paper aims to propose an integrative framework that relates strategic organizational capabilities for sustainability and expected corporate sustainability benefits. For this, a systematic literature review was conducted, based on a paper sample of 88 publications extracted from the ISI Web of Science database. The paper also develops a descriptive overview of the subject, presenting the main gaps and a research agenda. The results showed that corporate sustainability is strongly related to business strategy and the ability of companies to develop specific capabilities. Thus, the understanding from academics and managers on what strategic organizational capabilities (OCs) consists and how they can be developed or improved is fundamental to reaching corporate sustainability. The paper presents some contributions. First, the integrative framework developed from the literature review comprises seven categories of organizational capabilities for sustainability (OCSs) related to ten categories of corporate sustainability benefits (CSBs). Second, the framework can contribute as a support tool for managers, by providing an explicit guideline on which capabilities that can be developed and/or improved in the organization to achieve a certainly expected sustainability benefit. Third, it is possible to identify OCS and CSB categories that have already been related in the literature and those that need further research. Fourth, the overview of the literature of OCS by bibliometric and cluster analyses allowed a broad understanding of how academics have addressed these themes over the years. Finally, the research agenda developed from the literature review may broaden opportunities for further research on the subject.

The Circular Economy is increasingly seen as a possible solution to address sustainable development. An economic system that minimises resource input into and waste, emission, and energy leakage out of the system is hoped to mitigate negative impacts without jeopardising growth and prosperity. This paper discusses the sustainability performance of the circular business models (CBM) and circular supply chains necessary to implement the concept on an organisational level and proposes a framework to integrate circular business models and circular supply chain management towards sustainable development. It was developed based on literature analysis and four case studies. The proposed framework shows how different circular business models are driving circular supply chain in different loops: closing loops, slowing loops, intensifying loops, narrowing loops, and dematerialising loops. The identified circular business models vary in complexity of the circular supply chain and in the value proposition. Our research indicates circular business and circular supply chain help in realising sustainability ambitions.

This paper addresses sustainable business models (SBMs), as an attempt to systematically integrate corporate sustainability principles (including economic, environmental and social goals; multi-stakeholder perspective and long-term outlook) into core business. However, understanding the mechanisms for this systematic integration is still challenging, given complexities of sustainable development. Therefore, SBM concept risks that, by trying to include everything, it may end up losing meaning and connection to practical solutions. To do so, we employ a multi-method approach encompassing a systematic literature review to ensure conceptual basis for the proposed framework and thirteen qualitative interviews with practitioners for face validation of the tool. This paper proposes the Sustainable Value Exchange Matrix, a visual framework to help academics and practitioners discuss sustainable business models, based on solid theory analysis and practice-oriented application. The tool proposed provokes reflections about organization's reason of existence and deployment of this purpose into the business model dimensions from a multi-stakeholder and from a value exchange perspective.

Several publications approach the subject of corporate sustainability performance, considering this background, the present research conducts a systematic literature review based on 261 papers towards a conceptual framework for integrating sustainability performance into business. Moreover, it aims at structuring the literature on corporate sustainability performance to highlight its main contributions and gaps. Data analysis initiates with a descriptive statistics of the sample, including yearly distribution, main journals, and most cited papers. It is followed by the delimitation of each sustainability performance approach of measurement, management and reporting and the cross analysis among them. Finally, a conceptual framework is proposed to address the integration of sustainability performance into business. This framework is composed by three levels. The first represents the principles for corporate sustainability to guide decision-making driven by collective values. The second level includes the core sustainable business elements, which are processes and practices, capabilities, offerings and contributions to sustainable development. At the third level, the context factors represent the internal and external aspects that affect the previous levels.

Given the challenge of measuring corporate sustainability in practice, the aim of the present exploratory research is to investigate the incorporation of sustainability in corporate performance measurement systems, towards sustainability performance measurement system (SPMS). More specifically, the research seeks to explore the factors that affect the interaction between sustainability indicators regarding their relative priority for decision making and to investigate how firms include sustainability indicators into their corporate performance measurement systems. To address these objectives, cross-sector case studies were conducted in five firms located in Brazil. Data were collected based on semi-structured interviews and triangulated with published reports and internal documents. The results show four performance measurement systems that encompass sustainability indicators: (a) periodic performance measurement system of a specific area/department; (b) individual performance assessment; (c) sustainability reporting; and (d) project assessment. The paper value lies in bringing a structured view of integrating sustainability in a corporate performance measurement system, based on empirical evidence. However, further research is still needed to develop a more integrative and dynamic SPMS encompassing both leading and lagging indicators to better understand the priorities, interactions and tradeoffs between sustainability indicators.

In order to incorporate sustainability into business, firms need to go beyond voluntary social and environmental initiatives. Sustainable business model (SBM) can support managers to better understand how it can contribution to global sustainable development through firm's value proposition and including methods of value creation, delivery and capture. In this sense, opportunities to innovations in firms’ SBM can be derived from the assessment of their business model using corporate sustainability as dominant paradigm. So, a comprehensive and integrative performance measurement framework for SBM is proposed to support the identification of sustainability innovations. In this context, the purpose of this paper is to explore the contributions and limitations of the proposed framework. The methodological approach chosen is secondary data analysis, by using content analysis to extract evidences from sources such as corporate websites, annual and sustainability reports of four industry group leaders according to Dow Jones Sustainability Indices in 2014. Two of them belong to consumer goods manufacturing and the others are retailers.
