Many companies have already experienced the benefits sustainability may bring in terms of positive impacts on society, the environment, and its market value. Despite this, most of them do not know how Human Resource Development (HRD) could effectively promote employees' commitment to results and facilitate organizational change. The main objective of this paper is to propose guidelines for the development of human resources that contributes toward sustainability in organizations. The drivers of sustainability and HRD identified in the literature supported the analyses of 19 GRI G4 sustainability reports from Brazilian companies included in the BM&F Bovespa Corporate Sustainability Index (2016). The analyses allowed the characterization of the companies' sustainability and HRD initiatives, as well as the elaboration of ten HRD guidelines to foster corporate sustainability. This work contributes to the articulation on how the concepts of HRD and sustainability are related, promoting the discussion about the drivers of the HRD that can support managers in the journey toward sustainable development.

To survive in the long term, business needs to profit, controlling environmental impacts with social responsibility. Sustainability programs involve the integration of social and environmental issues in business models and organizational processes. The assessment of sustainability programs is a problem of multiple criteria decision analysis (MCDA). This work presents applications of MCDA for the assessment of sustainability programs in the textile industry. Applied methods for MCDA are analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and the technique for the order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS). The reasons to apply AHP and TOPSIS include providing an assessment index, ranging from 0 to 1, and that the MCDA model is expected to have more criteria than alternatives. Therefore, an application of other methods, such as data envelopment analysis, could be prejudiced. Concepts from the triple bottom line, economic, social as well as environmental criteria were inserted in the proposed model. Sustainability programs of six leading companies from the Brazilian textile industry were evaluated. The main finding of the research is that AHP and TOPSIS resulted in similar evaluations for sustainability programs. Both methods resulted in the same rank of alternatives. However, with TOPSIS, companies' sustainability indices were more disperse, varying from 0.10 to 0.92 against a range from 0.23 to 0.69 with AHP.

The increase in industrial activities to meet the growing needs of the population has led many companies to adopt environmental management (EM) policies to offset their impacts on the environment. For this reason, this article proposes a tool to identify the maturity levels of the elements of EM in industrial companies. The principles and practices of these elements were identified in the scientific literature and their practice was tested in an industrial company using the proposed tool. The main results show that the proposed tool allows to measure the maturity of the EM principles in industrial companies, making it possible to direct efforts toward EM elements with lower level of maturity.

Corporate sustainability (CS) literature has gone through a period of intense development. The moment is favorable to gather these contributions to consistently advance the state-of-the-art in CS and, also, discuss them in application to real contexts. The main objective of the paper is to systematize, through a literature review using content analysis of the 30 most cited articles from 2007 to 2017, the guiding pillars of CS management. A systematic search for papers was carried out in Scopus and Web of Science, and the initial screening of the papers was assisted by the coding software, MAXQDA 2018, through which the authors structured and analyzed their main insights, contributions, and conclusions. After getting acquainted with the sample, an in-depth reading of the texts was conducted and 60 CS elements were identified. The elements cited in the relevant literature were grouped into six pillars related to corporate sustainability strategy, corporate governance, human resources management, knowledge and innovation management, measurement, disclosure, and independent assurance, and management systems, and integrated management systems. The main contribution of this paper is to identify the management pillars of CS in a systematic way to consistently advance the state-of-the-art in the subject. Also, this study provides understanding to managers on the main aspects that make up the integration of this construct in the companies.

The environment is the natural source of resources to meet human needs, and processing companies are known to be the main consumers of natural resources. As a result of the productive activities of the companies, the environment has been highly impacted by the loss of non-renewable resources and the emission of polluting waste and gases. The purpose of this article is to characterize and discuss cleaner production (CP) opportunities and challenges for its implementation in a plastic footwear industry. The study was based on a literature review (section 2), which guided the case study analysis in the practical context of six Brazilian footwear plants. The cross analysis of these case studies (section 4), together with the elements identified in the literature, allowed the identification and discussion of CP opportunities and challenges (section 5) particularly suitable for use in the footwear industry. This study contributes with practical suggestions of how footwear plants can mitigate their impacts on the environment by implementing elements of CP. Further, this study opens new avenues of research on CP implementation in this specific sector and present a framework for elaborating guidelines that can be used by other researchers when performing similar case studies.

The Integrated Management System (IMS) seems to be a suitable strategy to manage multiple systems that have to meet the needs and expectations of various stakeholders. The main objective of this research is to establish the guiding principles of IMS and the essential elements for its development and maintenance in order to move towards unifying a starting point in the literature. This objective was reached through a systematic content analysis with focus on the content analysis of the most cited articles of Scopus and Web of Science databases from 2006 to 2016. The results indicate the existence of 28 elements for development and implementation of IMS. Through the critical analysis of these elements 6 principles of IMS were systematized: 1) Systemic Management; 2) Standardization; 3) Strategic, tactic and operational integration; 4) Organizational learning; 5) Debureaucratization; and 6) Continuous Improvement. Each principle is a pillar for development and maintenance of IMS. The scientific contribution of this study is that it represents a starting point towards the establishment of the IMS theory. Moreover, taking into account these results one can homogenize the basis of IMS, providing research results with a higher degree of comparability. The results of this work may also help company managers better target their efforts in the management of the IMS, serving as a guideline to assist them in developing and maintaining each one of the abovementioned pillars. The best of the authors’ knowledge, this is one of the first attempts to unify the literature.

Despite the importance and characteristics sugar-energy industry, the specialized literature does not present studies to analyze specifically the human toxicity of residues and by-products generated by this industry. Therefore, the objective of this article is the proposal of an unprecedented Human Toxicity Potential Index (Htpi) applied to the sugar-energy industry in order to evaluate its environmental performance based on the human toxicity potential. The Htpi indicator developed in this work takes into account, for each residue and by-product generated: i) the relative weighting of the potential impact on human health; (ii) the relative quantity produced over a given period of time; (iii) the relative geographical coverage or relative spatial dispersion that each residue/by-product can achieve; and iv) the evaluation of the suitability of the final destination of each residue/by-product practiced by the company, since each company can use adequate or inadequate means in the final disposal. Regarding the potential impact on human health, the results pointed out that the residues/by-products with the highest relative weight are vinasse (35.57%), filter cake (29.15%) and bagasse-burning ashes (27.38%). The proposed index was tested in a large Brazilian sugar-energy enterprise in which, despite the large amount of residues and by-products generated, the result achieved was environmentally friendly. The Htpi index resulted in 93.97%, which means that 93.97% of the residues and by-products generated by this company have an adequate environmental allocation when considering its human toxicity potential.

The companies’ needs to adopt changes in their way of production to maximize the environmental performance required by their stakeholders, and at the same time, to maximize their economic and market performance, have made them seek for environmental strategies and certifications. In this sense, the Cleaner Production and the Environmental Management System based on ISO 14001 have been, respectively, presented, since the main objective of this research is to identify and analyze Cleaner Production contributions to comply with ISO 14001 requirements. For such, a survey research has been carried out in Brazilian industrial companies certified by ISO 14001. We have identified the main performance factors by leading practices and variables of Cleaner Production that contribute to the compliance with the standard requirements by companies. Thus, it has been noted that Cleaner Production is an important strategy for the preparation of companies for certification as well as for improving their environmental performance.

This paper presents the state of research and main trends in public service management through a bibliometric analysis. It identifies scientific gaps that can promote and guide new studies on improving the existing theory or proposing innovative models. The most common topics in major articles about public service management between 2004 and 2014 are identified. Academic interest in aspects of the public sector has grown considerably, especially in the areas of social sciences, management and finance. In the studies that are specifically designed to public service management, this growth was herein observed and analyzed. The current paper presents and analyses major publications involving public service management in the decade of 2004-2014, so as to identify scientific gaps to promote and guide new studies on the aforementioned subject. For this purpose, a bibliometric study of related scientific papers was carried out. The data was collected from the Scopus and Web of Science databases, enabling an analysis of the most cited articles, keywords and authors, and of the most recently published article on public service management by each of these cited authors. Based on this analysis, it was observed that the New Public Management model is the principal object of research on public service management, and that the scientific gaps mainly involve the public service motivation. In this way, the main scientific contribution of the present paper is to assist new studies on public service management, including the expansion of existing theory and innovative model proposals.
