The international literature has provided significant contributions to recognise the important role of transport and social equity, particularly in the context of participating in key life-activities, and in the quality of life. However, little has been done on the relationship between long-distance rail transport, such as High Speed Rail (HSR), and social equity assessment. The objective of this manuscript is to fill this gap, by recognising that policy makers should be aware about possible effects of disparities brought by the interventions. Indeed, when planning the introduction of similar infrastructures or managing their impacts, they should focus on integrative solutions taking into account that the gap between primary and peripheral areas should not increase. Through a methodology made up of four steps, where the Gini index has been considered, it results that HSR increases inequity in four European countries.

An economic analysis identifies, measures, and compares the costs and benefits of alternative interventions, with the objective of supporting decisions concerning the best use of limited resources. The cost benefit analysis (CBA) has played a significant role within the entire decision-making process, and is the principal assessment methodology. In recent years, equity issues in relation to transportation planning have become a hot topic at an international level. In this paper, the objective was to integrate equity within the evaluation of transport projects, specifically high speed rail projects. Here, consumer surplus is conceived as a monetized measure of both direct and indirect benefits for all zones, and for all socioeconomic categories served and not served by HSR, respectively. The added value of this paper is in rethinking these two shares in the computation of the total net present value as equity measures of the project itself. Specifically, the distribution of the HSR benefits among the different groups or zones in a given study area can be computed, and a comparison of the values for each zone of the study area and for each category makes it possible to assess the effects of equity between zones/categories.

High-speed rail (HSR) and tourism are closely related activities since improved mobility is perceived to facilitate tourist behavioral changes. The interest in research is very high and this contribution tries to provide an insight into this topic by making a comparison between the estimation of the parametric Generalized Estimating Equation (GEE) approaches with the non-parametric Classification and Regression Tree (CART). A dataset containing information both on tourism and transport for thirty Chinese provinces, during the 2001–2017 period, has been collected. The finding of this paper shows that the presence of HSR has value in the explanation of tourist arrivals.

The choice of locating a retail store in a given area is among the most important decisions that retailers have to make for the long term success of their business. A good location allows for easy access, attracts customers and increases sales. This paper proposes an ex-ante analysis by measuring retailers’ perceptions with respect to the inauguration of new metro stations. Main findings show that the increase of accessibility brought by new interventions in the transit system increases the attractiveness of the area for retailer’s shops location choice. The evaluation of the attitudes of prospective retailers represents original insights into the dynamics of transit networks and the economic viability of local retailers.

Retail location choice and transportation systems are strictly dependent on each other. If, from one hand, the former has clear effects on the latter (being one of the determinants of travel demand), it is interesting to assess also the reverse impact. In this respect, notwithstanding the impact of accessibility to metro stations has been investigated in previous literature, few studies have highlighted the effect of active travel modes on retail location choice, so as no previous study has analysed this impact at a disaggregate level through a Stated Preference (SP) survey. This paper focuses on the choice behaviour of single retailers / managers of three densest urban retail districts in the city of Naples (in the South of Italy). The work analysis the impact of walkability and accessibility to metro stations on retail / businesses location choice. A SP survey and the estimation of several random utility models (RUM) have been carried out, with the aim of evaluating the distribution of retailers' Willingness To Pay (WTP). Results show that retailers are more willing to pay for locating their activities close to pedestrian zones rather than metro stations and provides other insights on the effect of socio-demographic variables.

The objective of this paper is to highlight the link between the development of the transport system and the trust that citizens place in institutions' initiatives. A theoretical model has been specified according to which perceived power and knowledge of the transportation system influence the perceived benefits of local policies as well as the awareness of the relative costs. Such aspects, on their turn, influence and are linked to trust both in the local transport and in the local policy in general. Model estimation has been carried out through the results of a survey employed in the metropolitan area of the city of Naples (South of Italy) performing a Structural Equation Model with Partial Least Square estimation (PLS‐PM).

The deployment of HSR services in the recent decades has been, arguably, the most significant innovation for intercity travel around the globe. HSR has brought impacts which have been widely studied in different countries in relation to the different socioeconomic, territorial and transport characteristics. This paper analyses the economic growth, the transport accessibility and the social impacts observed in Italy after ten years of HSR operation, as well as the estimated impacts of the system completion. The Italian case study is of particular interest since along the 1,467 km of new high speed line (300 km/h), a combination of major cities distances and a unique HSR competitive market, producing prices reductions and more daily trains, brought a 200% increase of HSR demand (from 15 to 45 millions of passengers/year). Estimations results show that, on average, HSR in Italy contributed to a significant increase in transport accessibility (+32%) for the zones along the HSR network, while only marginal for the others (+6%). Impacts on the economic growth show that HSR has contributed to an extra growth of per capita GDP of + 2.6% in 10 years and would have contributed to a further increase of 3.6% if the final project scenario (HSR_N) would had been completed by 2018. Regional (horizontal) equity impacts were evaluated in terms of the Gini indexes variations with respect to the distribution of the transport accessibility. It results that HSR in Italy has decreased equity in terms of users’ travel time accessibility of 11%, increasing the differences between the zones served by HSR and those not. If the HSR_N scenario would have been completed equity indices would have increased of 29% with respect to the pre-HSR 2008 scenario, thus reducing regional inequalities in the country. Results show that the HSR project was a country-level “game changer” in Italy, suggesting that the wider economic benefits, the assumptions on market regulation, the effects on regional disparities and the compensatory measures should be included in the ex ante and ex post evaluation of similar projects.

This research establishes the theoretical link between the development of tourism and citizens' trust. The research is grounded in political economy of state intervention in tourism and draws from social exchange theory to build the theoretical model. The latter incorporates variables such as trust, power, knowledge, and benefits and costs of tourism, which are central to any exchange process between social actors. The model distinguishes and proposes a theoretical relationship between domain specific political trust and generic political trust. The former refers to citizens' trust in local government in the specific context of tourism development while the latter refers to citizens' general level of trust in local government. The model is tested using data collected from residents of the metropolitan area of Naples, Italy. Results suggest that residents’ trust in local government in the specific context of tourism strongly influences their general level of trust, suggesting a spill-over effect of political trust. We demonstrated empirically that political trust in the context of tourism and the general trust in an institution are theoretically distinct concepts. The constructs we used to conceptualize tourism development has distinct influence on the two dimensions of political trust.

This paper provides a contribution to the international literature by applying regression tree methods to the analysis of the expected effects of the High Speed Rail project in Italy on the tourism market. This approach, as far as the author knows, has never been applied in this context. Tourism and transport information have been gathered for 99 Italian provinces during the 2006–2016 period. Tree-structured methods have been chosen as an application of regression models in which some explanatory variables are used as covariates to predict the dependent variable values on the basis of some decision rules. This approach establishes a casual effect between dependent and independent variables. The dependent variables chosen are the Italian and foreign tourists, and the number of overnights spent by Italians and foreigners. Among the independent variables are the presence of HSR, the presence of first-level airport hubs and the number of operating bases of low-cost airlines; among the attractiveness variables are the GDP, the number of attractions in a given province, the presence of the sea, the population and the percentage of unemployment. The main outcome of this study is that HSR affects the tourism market.

Although transport infrastructure is one of the prominent factors that make Spain a major tourist destination, the international literature has revealed that the opening of new High-Speed Rail (HSR) lines is not sufficient by itself in order to increase tourist outputs in the new connected destinations. Nevertheless, the roles played by different characteristics of both travelers and destinations are of interest but they still remain not sufficiently explored. This paper focuses on the role played by HSR in fostering cultural tourism by applying a fixed-effect econometric model to a panel database (1988–2017). The database includes the number of tourists to some of the major Spanish cultural centers. The results show different impacts based on the regions, the characteristics of the museums, and the expected tourists. For destinations with previous cultural attraction, a positive effect is more evident. Moreover, the centrality of the HSR station as an enabling factor as well as the growth of the tourist market to the surrounding municipalities has been detected. Another interesting result is related to the cooperation effect between HSR and air transport, which encourages the arrivals of foreign tourists. These findings should help planners to develop policies that optimize tourist revenues by exploiting the potential of HSR development in the future.

Alan Wilson’s contributions to the development of dynamic models of network evolution are presented in this manuscript. His ideas, first represented in the dynamic retail model, were transferred to the task of modelling the evolution of transport networks. He also anticipated the question of handling multi-modal situations. Indeed, his model could be formulated in a way that the focus could be on the effect of given variables – for example public transport fares or parking provision and charging – and hence of exploring ways of using these models in a policy context.

The objective of this study is to analyze the tourism spatial interaction that defines two scenarios, i.e., the actual one with the current high-speed rail (HSR) network, and the future one with an extension of the HSR network, considering as a case study the Capital region of China. The impact of HSR on the spatial distribution characteristics is investigated. The main outcome of this study is that the extension of the HSR network in the future scenario will significantly increase the total tourism spatial interaction and will reduce the spatial difference. What this paper adds to the current knowledge about HSR and tourism is that smaller cities, such as Tangshan, Zhangjiakou, and Chengde, connected via HSR to core cities will benefit the most from the HSR network’s operation. Those cities should take the HSR network as a development opportunity to enhance their attractiveness and strengthen their marketing to achieve sustainable tourism competitiveness. The study found that effects can also be registered on larger cities, but they are smaller. So, larger cities, such as Beijing and Tianjin, should reassess their attractiveness to the tourist market and take corresponding countermeasures. The findings of this study can be used by tourism management authorities to develop short-term and long-term plans.

The aim of this paper is to analyse through a systematic literature review the main topics studied on a relatively new concept: e-grocery. This study examines the existing literature through the use of some interactive Scopus applications with the goal to provide: (1) a better understanding of the main topics that have been analysed up to now; (2) the principal methodologies that have been used; and (3) the challenges that still exist as well as literature gaps. First, we provide a summary of what has been previously researched in the field, analysing the trends regarding time, sources, authors, countries and document types. Then, tokenization, and a natural language process (NLP) that applies the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) method, is used to extract the main topics in the field. We obtain that the research topics in the discipline have always been linked with technological changes, innovation and diffusion, and environmental effects have been a cornerstone since the origin of the field. In comparison with other fields in transport economics, we notice that experimental design and choice modelling are not very popular. As a step towards future research, we propose an integrative framework for e-grocery consumer behaviour that starts from the Engel–Kollat–Blackwell (EKB) model.

Traditional cost/benefit analysis does not explicitly consider public participation in its computation. It neglects that stakeholders should be considered during the process of project evaluation. In this paper the costs and benefits of participatory activity are measured with the aim of analysing whether this economic measurement provides a way forward in project evaluation. Through the case study of the high speed rail line between Lyon and Turin, it is demonstrated that public participation should move forward as a field.

The decrease in travel times, the better quality of the supplied services and the improved accessibility are the main factors of success of High Speed Rail links. In this paper, evidence of the impacts of the High Speed Rail line between Rome and Naples in Italy will be provided on the basis of a survey which was carried out in March 2008. A Revealed Preference (RP) survey was undertaken by Trenitalia (the Commercial Division of Italian railways) and three different questionnaires were prepared to be submitted to car users, Intercity train users and High Speed train users. They all have in common questions concerning the socioeconomic characteristics of the users, questions related to the existence of possible time constraints for the trip undertaken and questions concerning previous travel choices. Data from Trenitalia highlighted that the use of car and of Intercity trains had almost remained unchanged during the few years of operation of the High Speed service. However, a generated demand was derived from the use of this High Speed Rail link and this means that the introduction of the High Speed service between Rome and Naples probably had impacts, as excepted, on mobility choices (i.e. increase in trip frequency, new trips never done before, etc.). Data gathered were used first of all to understand this phenomenon and then to estimate a mode choice model to reproduce/forecast modal share. Specifically the choice between car and rail was modelled through a schedule based approach and with a Nested Logit model with the “train” utility function including late and early penalties.

This chapter provides an overview of the history of modelling residential location choice. Models of residential mobility typically have developed for illuminating the nature of location choice at different territorial scales or as part of an integrated model of land-use and transport. The latter tend to be more comprehensive in nature, though certain other investigations do consider interactions of location choice with other key decisions, such as work location. Models presented in this book are described here briefly and are presented here according to three dimensions: theory and method, i.e. the modelling approach at the root of the model; categorisation of residential decision makers; and treatment of space, i.e. continuous, zoning or cells.
