Nowadays it is important to know the origins of most products, not only for public health reasons, with regard to food products, but also because of the increasing people's awareness of environmental and social aspects, posing new challenges in the quality of products and their environmental impact. Food traceability information must be collected throughout the supply chain, and be registered on a platform external to all operators in that chain. This information must be available, not only to value chain operators and public health authorities, but also to end customers. One of the best ways to provide customers with this traceability information, in the places where they need to make a decision about which products to buy, is to add kiosks at the points of sale for those products. This article describes the design and architecture of a traceability platform for fish and fishery products, within the scope of the ValorMar R&D project, as well as the applications that supply the platform with traceability information, and a kiosk application for points of sale and a mobile app for final consumers, which will allow them to consult the traceability of fish and fishery products' lots.

The concept of the Internet of Things (IoT) has been a recurrent view of the physical technological environment, in the light of which it is expected that everyday artifacts are connected, enhancing the availability and ubiquity of “smart” services. Higher education institutions can be seen as a privileged ecosystem for the development of intelligent and smart solutions, due to its dynamic and everyday changing environment, which includes not only physical infrastructures, digital services, but also people, i.e., students, researchers, lecturers, and staff. This work introduces an Application-oriented Architecture-AoA that has been designed to streamline the design and development of “smart” solutions inside the campus, by focusing on the Application side and reshaping the concept of “service” to a piece of “functionality” with a clear and objective purpose, rather than the classic and conventional approach, more focused on the development or technical sides. The proposed approach provides the mechanism to have multiple applications interacting and sharing data and functionalities, ensuring coexistence between new and legacy systems that are in use on the campus, removing the major drawbacks that basic monolithic applications typically require. The generic AoA model is described and the procedure to create a new application is systematized. Lastly, three case studies (RnMonitor, Refill_H2O, and BiRa) are presented end elaborated using the AoA procedure designed to create a new application.

IoT-based monitoring (i.e. smart monitoring) technologies have been recently used for on-line monitoring in many application fields, such as home, environmental and industrial process monitoring. People spend at least half of their life inside buildings, therefore, Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) plays an important role both on human health and on buildings’ sustainability. Radon gas is one of the most important parameters regarding IAQ assessment, being considered by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the second largest risk factor associated with lung cancer. This paper aims to present RnMonitor, a WebGIS-based platform developed for effective Radon Risk Management and expedite in situ deployment of IoT-based sensors. Given the fact that the spatial context is key for visual and data analytics, the proposed platform takes advantage of a hierarchy of spatially related entities (buildings/rooms/devices) that are natively georeferenced in the system, and thus providing spatial context to acquired data, and other relevant metrics, by means of a simple, responsive and intuitive web-based application.

This paper presents the design methodology used to specify a Human-in-the-Loop Cyber-Physical System (HITL-CPS) for online monitoring and active mitigation of the indoor radon gas concentration in non-residential granitic buildings with regular human occupation restricted to a work schedule, such as public buildings like administration offices, schools, kindergartens, etc. The paper follows the methodology that is being carried out in the RnMonitor R&D project in order to design the overall CPS architecture specification using the following approach: i) Conceptual Approach and Application Requirements; ii) Design Specifications and iii) Architecture Definition. At the end, main conclusions are presented alongside with a set of promising avenues for future development.

Business process management focuses its attention on designing, modelling and documenting business processes, to describe which activities are performed and the dependencies between them. These business process models have lots of useful information for starting to develop a supporting software system. This paper proposes a model-driven approach to support the construction of a use case model, an integrated domain model, and a user interface model, from a set of business process models, comprising all existing information in those models. The proposed approach obtains a system’s complete use case model, including the identification of actors, use cases and the corresponding descriptions, and relations between use cases, and between these and the structural domain classes. The resulting integrated use case and domain models are then further transformed into the system’s default abstract user interface model. A demonstration case is used throughout the paper as a running example. At the

Increasing adoption of mobile smart devices demands a growing number of mobile applications (apps). Each of these applications must often be deployed to different mobile platforms, such as Android, iOS or Windows. Many of these applications are data-oriented, enabling the user to manage information, by creating, updating, deleting and retrieving data on his smart mobile device. By using a model-driven development approach, it is possible to generate a platform independent user interface model from a domain model, which represents the information structure of the application domain, and then have different code generators for each different target platform. This chapter presents such an approach together with a case study for Android apps.

Mobile computing and Cloud computing are two of the most growing technologies in number of users, practitioners and research projects. This chapter surveys mobile technologies and applications, along with cloud computing technologies and applications, presenting their evolution and characteristics. Then, building on mobile devices limitations and mobile apps increasing need of resources, and on the cloud computing ability to overcome those limitations, the chapter presents mobile cloud computing, and characterizes it by addressing approaches to augment mobile devices capabilities. The chapter is settled after some views about future research directions and some concluding remarks.

Use case driven software development starts, in general, with abstract problem domain descriptions of how the users see themselves using the system being developed, and involves a series of iterative refinement steps that incrementally add detail to the use case model, bringing those descriptions to the solution domain. Use cases involve interactions between human actors and the system state. These interactions are held within interaction spaces, which are modeled through a user interface model. Business applications are in general data-driven, comprising a set of typical functions that the users can make on the system. When a use case driven approach is used to develop data-oriented applications those typical functions pop-up as use case patterns, and their interactions occur within a set of user interface patterns. This paper presents a set of use case patterns and the corresponding user interface patterns typically found in data-oriented business applications. For that, a user interface metamodel and corresponding concrete user interface modeling language are also proposed.

Cloud computing turned utility computing into a reality. Organizations may currently pay only for what they use, in computing power or storage capacity, as well as in electricity or other utilities. This enables a reduction of the investment in IT and leads to the more efficient use of datacenters, while allowing organizations to focus on the IT services they need to hire. To be able to fully benefit from the advantages of the cloud computing, organizations need to migrate their current applications to the cloud. After a brief introduction to cloud computing and to the Microsoft Windows Azure platform, this paper analyzes the migration of an on-premises web application, used on a secondary vocational school, to the cloud. It then compares the application's performance when deployed to a traditional Windows server versus its deployment to Windows Azure
