Microfinance institutions are social enterprises that focus on the provision of financial services to poor populations excluded from the conventional banking system. These organizations face a double-bottom line, dealing simultaneously with a financial and social objective. The challenge of putting it into action is great, especially when there is a need to involve all stakeholders and to replicate the experience to new communities. One way to sustain both financial performance and social impacts is to develop a business analytics solution aiming at measuring and expanding social impacts in a financially sustainable way. This paper describes main elements to be considered, in particular the organizational context, the development process, and implementation issues that would facilitate or impede the deployment of a business analytics initiative in practice. Finally, two main components of the implementation process are specifically pointed out: a behavioral fit of the business analytics solution to the cultural context of the organization, and the country where it is deployed, and a flexible commitment in the management of the business analytics initiative implementation.

The objective of this paper is an assessment of the financial and social performance of a network of village banks in Cameroon and the provision of data‐driven guidance to managers helping them in their decision‐making process. An analysis framework in three stages is developed. First, a data envelopment analysis (DEA) is implemented for measuring efficiency, identifying best practices, and setting goals to less efficient microfinance institutions. Then, a DEA operating frontiers (DEA‐OF) model is designed to identify improvement paths setting short‐term goals toward their long‐term DEA objective and providing effective and time‐dependent guidance to managers in their efficiency improvement process. Finally, DEA and DEA‐OF results are translated into financial and nonfinancial indicators daily used by managers through three different and interrelated scorecards. Results of this third stage are used for identifying village banks ready for the new phase of development of the network aiming to fund community projects.

The analysis of food price volatility is really important in economics. Understanding why do prices evolve as they do and explaining what are the sources of price variations is a central question for economies worldwide, and especially for African economies. Indeed, food price volatility often appears as one of the fundamental characteristics of agricultural markets. Thus, without such information, forecasting price evolutions is very difficult and providing adequate recommendations to policy-makers becomes a challenge. The objective of this chapter is, on the one hand, to explain the various theoretical views of the determinants of food price volatility in the economic literature and, on the other hand, to measure food price volatility in Cameroon as well as to find out factors that influence this volatility. Specifically, the chapter analyses the trajectory of food price series and identifies the determinants of their fluctuations by using an ARMA, an ARMA-X, a GARCH, and a GARCH-X model. Unlike previous studies, we assume that food price volatility on Cameroonian markets is the result of domestic/local factors as well as external factors coming from the world market. Two main results have been found. First, although there is a general tendency to assert that food price volatility has increased over time, we were unable to confirm this hypothesis. One potential explanation relies on the fact that imported cereals have many potential substitutes in Cameroon. Second, food price volatility in Cameroon is mostly determined by local/domestic factors such as price volatility of other agricultural and non-agricultural products, and not by external factors such as price volatility of crude oil or imported cereals, as well as by specific political events to this country, but not by the 2008 food crisis; suggesting the existence of a low price transmission between international and Cameroonian markets. Consequently, the three recommendations aiming at policy-makers to reduc

The objective of this paper is to analyse the welfare effects of food price volatility on Cameroonian consumers. Using data from the third Cameroonian Household Consumption Surveys, the price elasticities are obtained from a Quadratic Almost Ideal Demand System model. Price elasticities are then used to evaluate the distributional impacts of food price changes in terms of compensating variation. The paper finds that: (a) poor households are the most affected by food price volatility and,(b) the welfare losses from food price volatility depend on the extent of any price hike.

Staple crop production in developing countries contributes decisively to food safety. In Sub- Saharan Africa however, the Green Revolution, aiming at sustaining agricultural productivity growth was mostly viewed as not successful, compared to what happened in Asian countries. There is a widespread agreement on the fact that this statement is especially related to the food marketing environment and to transaction costs. Stagnant food crop productivity and poor market performance may then be at stake. The paper aims at identifying the relative importance of marketing and production behaviours. It focuses on the case of maize in Sub- Saharan Africa. The results show that, beyond production choices, two aspects should be taken into account in order to understand commercialisation decisions: the role of intermediation and that of storage.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to develop a new model allowing the implementation of a benchmarking process that jointly measure the efficiency of franchise chains and determine their optimal organizational form. Design/methodology/approach – The methodology is based on a non-econometric technique developed by management scientists on economic concepts for evaluating the performance of decision-making units and implementing a benchmarking process. An extended model is developed in the paper for evaluating the efficiency and determining the optimal percentage of company-owned outlets (PCO) of each franchise chain. Findings – First, results showed that the PCO has a positive impact on franchise chain efficiency; even if other chain characteristics have a larger impact. Second, the optimization of the PCO allows for additional improvements in efficiency. Research limitations/implications – Even though this study has some limitations (e.g. sample and variable selection), it contributes to the literature on franchising by providing an approach allowing us to answer to the question of Shane (1998) on the optimal proportion of franchised units given other firm characteristics. Practical implications – By developing a model that allows for the joint evaluation of franchise chain efficiency and optimal PCO, this study offers to franchisors a new benchmarking process allowing for both a competitive and functional benchmarking. Originality/value – The originality of this research can be found in the new model developed for allowing a benchmarking of franchise chains that allows an evaluation of efficiency jointly with a determination of their optimal organizational form.

This paper draws on the dynamic capabilities approach to explain the performance of franchised chains. This approach is a useful lens to understand why some chains are more likely to drive superior performance than others. Hence, using this theoretical lens, we explore why and how several characteristics of franchised chains influence sales performance. This study includes 189 retail and service chains operating in the United States. Findings show that experience before franchising, length of training, chain age, franchising fees, and level of internationalization positively impact performance of franchised chains, whereas the proportion of franchised units has a curvilinear influence (inverted‐U shape) on chains' performance. Implications for franchising scholars and practitioners are discussed.

Due to their high protein content, soybeans are important feedstuffs in the European Union (EU). However, the cultivation of soybeans using genetically modified (GM) varieties in non-EU countries is increasing and the EU authorization of GM products takes longer than in other countries, leading to an asynchronous approval between the EU and non-EU countries that might induce soybean trade disruptions. This paper uses an integrated modelling system to simulate Argentina, Brazil and the United States ending soybean exports to the EU. The impact on world trade and on the EU import prices of soy products is analysed with a computable general equilibrium model. EU soy imports are shown to decline, and the import price of soybeans in the EU increases. The effects on EU agricultural markets are analysed based on a partial equilibrium model. Feed costs in the EU are found to increase with poultry and pork the most affected: production and exports decline and imports increase. However, the effects of a trade ban are found to be less profound than in many other studies due to compensating substitution effects at various market levels: increasing imports from third countries, increasing domestic oilseed production and the use of other protein feeds.JRC.J.4-Agriculture and Life Sciences in the Econom

This paper deals with the performance of franchise chains related to their percentage of company-owned outlets (PCO). This research uses a Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to assess franchise chains’ efficiency, and a meta-frontier approach to analyze chains’ efficiency between and across sectors. The sample includes 43 chains of the service and retail sectors, located in the French market. Data are available over the 2005-2007 period allowing a longitudinal analysis. The main findings show that the meta-frontier is built up on retail chains rather than on service chains, and that there is a relationship between the PCO and the chain efficiency. Finally, there is no significant difference between the observed PCOs and the optimal PCOs which means that franchisors in our sample have already reached a PCO that is close to the PCO that optimizes the chain efficiency.

This chapter investigates price dynamics of bovine and porcine production for the European Union (EU) as a whole and for each Member States (MS). The variability of production price series and the correlation between Member States price and the EU price are analysed. Furthermore, several time series models are tested in order to identify the stochastic process that generated these prices. Results show a higher dispersion of prices at the MS level. Correlation between MS prices and the EU price have increased since 2003 for bovine production and decreased for porcine production. Results are not conclusive regarding the existence of a common price process between the EU and MS prices and the leadership of the EU price in the bovine and porcine EU meat market.

A broad set of methods are available to analyse price volatility. However, due to specific market characteristics and policy implications, agricultural commodity price volatility cannot be analysed as financial price volatility. This chapter reviews these points and outlines the content of the book.

The directional distance function defined in a DEA type non-parametric framework provides a highly flexible structure for modelling producer behaviour in the presence of polluting emissions and environmental regulations. This article presents five models describing different “command and control” type policy measures as an economic one about nitrogen pollution of agricultural origin. These measures concern the management of the mandatory constraint on the spreading of organic manure and the investment in manure treatment facilities. The study also simulates the use of an economic instrument by enforcing the individual manure constraint at an aggregated level. Using individual and aggregated DEA models, this paper provides insights into the impact of individual and collective management of environmental policy instruments.JRC.J.4-Agriculture and Life Sciences in the Econom

This paper compares plural form chains, i.e., chains in which franchised units and company-owned units coexist, in terms of performance and more specifically in terms of efficiency, to predominantly franchised chains and predominantly company-owned ones. The data envelopment analysis (DEA) is implemented to assess the efficiency of hotel chains in the French market. It is shown that plural form chains have a significantly higher average efficiency score than predominantly franchised and company-owned ones. Managerial implications are drawn for managing hotel chains

This chapter highlights the usefulness of the directional distance function in measuring the impact of the EU Nitrate directive, which prevents the free disposal of organic manure and nitrogen surplus. Efficiency indices for the production and environmental performance of farms at an individual level are proposed, together with an evaluation of the impact caused by the said EU regulation. An empirical illustration, based on a sample of French pig farms located in Brittany in 1996, is provided. This chapter extends the previous approach to good and bad outputs within the framework of the directional distance function, by introducing a by-product (organic manure), which becomes a pollutant once a certain level of disposability is exceeded. In this specific case, the bad output is the nitrogen surplus - resulting from the nutrient balance of each farm – that is spread on the land. This extension to the model allows us to explicitly introduce the EU regulation on organic manure, which sets a spreading limit of 170kg/ha. Our results show that the extended model provides greater possibilities for increasing the level of production, and thus the revenue of each farm, while decreasing the bad product (nitrogen surplus) and complying with the mandatory standard on the spreading of organic manure.
