Bandung Metropolitan Area is the second largest metropolitan area in Indonesia. Bandung Metropolitan Area also represents the type of metropolitan in Asia which has massive urbanization characteristic that caused by increasing economic growth. This research aims to analyze the spatial diversity of the factors influencing urban sprawl in Bandung Metropolitan Area. The data used in this study were secondary data consisting of Landsat satellite imagery and facilities data obtained from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) in the year of 2003 and 2014. The methodology used in this study was Geograpically Weighted Regression (GWR) analysis. The results showed that each variables has a different influence on each locations. Population density variable has a positive effect on the percentage of built up area. Whereas the variable of distance to Bandung City, the percentage of paddy field area, the percentage of forest area, and the distance to the toll road has a negative effect on the percentage of built up area. While the effect of the District Development Index variable toward the percentage of built up area varies in each research location.

Rapid urbanization in Asian developing countries has led to large urban agglomerations called “megacities.” The Jakarta megacity keeps growing and has extended along a corridor linking Jakarta to the Bandung metropolitan area. The continuation of this urban expansion, which converts strategic rice fields, seems unstoppable, regardless of its adverse impacts. This paper had four aims: to describe the tendencies of urban physical expansion over the last four decades in the Jakarta megacity; to portray the pattern of changes in the total population and population density along the Jakarta-Bandung urban corridor; to define the potential impact of the emergence of the Jakarta-Bandung conurbation; to explore better approaches for future mega-urban regions. GIS and remote sensing techniques were employed to identify urban expansion and the conversion of rice fields. The results showed that conurbation accelerated after the development of a highway road linking Jakarta and Bandung, and the population and built-up areas along the corridor have grown much faster than the cores of the two metropolitan areas. Four factors have likely driven this urban expansion: ineffective government policies, private settlements and new town development, private industrial estate development, and infrastructure. A critical effect of the growth in the Jakarta megacity is the conversion of rice fields in the region that support the rice stock for Western Java. This study recommends new approaches to mega-urban governance in developing countries to avoid the inefficiency of scarce resources, including industrial estates and new town governance with reliable data systems and collaborative approaches.

Suburbanization of Bekasi Regency as a part of the Jakarta Metropolitan Area (JMA) is mainly induced by urban expansion and industrialization, in which the suburbanization process threatens food security and ultimately disrupts urban sustainability. This study aims to characterize industrial-dominated suburban formation to manage the suburbanization process using a quantitative zoning method. In assessing the characteristics of industrially dominated suburban, this research utilizes the concept of urban–rural development (URD), which consists of five aspects of development (socioeconomic, population, industrial, land-use, and environmental). Factor analysis and Rustiadi’s spatial clustering form regional clusters using all variables while referring to the URD concept. The results showed that there are three regional typologies: (i) urban, (ii) Desakota, and (iii) rural regions. Urban regions are situated in the central and western parts of Bekasi Regency, rural regions are situated in the northern part of Bekasi Regency, while the desakota region is situated between urban and rural regions. Characteristics of each typology then could be used as the basis for development policy in Bekasi Regency which is then constructed towards the protection of agricultural areas in the rural and desakota regions, serving both food security function and strengthening urban sustainability of JMA.

Mega-urban development in Monsoon Asia has a relatively similar pattern, which leads to the formation of Mega-Urban Region (MUR). Such urban development potentially threatens sustainability as it vastly expands to encroaching rural areas. North Cianjur has been experiencing urban expansion from its surrounding metropolitan areas of Jakarta and Bandung that leads to the formation of urban sprawl and many other environmental problems. In this case, spatial characterization based on a quantitative and objective approach is urgently needed to provide better insight into the development of the mega-urban region’s suburb. This study proposed a quantitative and objective approach which was developed based on a quantitative zoning method. This study aims to characterize the region affected by urban expansion and urban form dynamics in North Cianjur using spatial clustering and spatial metrics approaches. The results showed that North Cianjur has four different zones consisting of two urban zones, a peri-urban zone, and a rural zone. Furthermore, the dynamics of urban forms in North Cianjur showed a trend of a more compact form in the urban zones while outside the urban zones it has become more sprawled and dispersed. This implies that spatial planning policies are incapable of containing and managing the massive expansion forces which were coming from Jakarta metropolitan, Bandung metropolitan, as well as Cianjur urban zones itself. Thus, the quantitative zoning method could enhance spatial planning, as different zones of urban–rural typology and urban from in the mega-urban suburb can be defined as a base for developing more specific effort in managing land-use changes. This approach could be adopted by other regions which have similar characteristics.

Its fisheries resources are expected to encourage the development within the regency. The establisment of economic growth center and increased linkages among sectors were suggested to accelerate the regional development. This study aims to analyze the level of regional development based on the completeness of regional infrastructure, to analyze the backward and forward linkages of the fisheries sector and to measure the role of fisheries in economy of Natuna Regency. Scalogram and Input-Output were used for data analysis. The results suggested two districts as a center of economic growth, they are Bunguran Timur District and Pulau Tiga. Instead of fisheries sector, the manufacturing, accommodation, food and beverage, transportation, warehousing, financial and insurance services, real estate and company services were the leading sectors due to their backward deployment and sensitivity to the final demands of the economic sectors. Efforts to encourage linkages between fisheries and other regional economic sector are necessary through the development of downstream industries. It includes the directly and indirectly use of fisheries outputs as raw material for production in the focus area of centers of growth

Landslide is a natural phenomenon that occurs because nature is looking for a balance due to disturbance affecting the land at the point of the landslide. Bogor Regency is categorized into a medium to high level ground vulnerable zone by BNPB, in this case the Cilwung Hulu watershed is an area that often experiences landslides. This study aims to develop a spatial model of landslides in the Ciliwung Hulu watershed using a PCA-based assessment method of the factors causing landslides. The results showed that there are seven parameters that can be used for spatial modeling of landslides, namely landform, land use, slope, rainfall, straightness, soil type, and lithology. Based on the results of the analysis it was found that the weight of each parameter is 0.347; 0.223; 0,200; 0,100; 0.071; 0.049; and 0.010. In this case landform has the highest weight as a determinant of landslide hazards. The area of landslide hazard class (low, medium, and high) obtained from the results of modeling are 4,651.53 ha (31%), 6,637.72 ha (43%), and 3,941.41 ha (26%) with accuracy overall of 57.8.

Rural–urban migration is a common demographic phenomenon in developing countries. Over the last four decades, Indonesia has had the highest rate of urbanization among Asian countries, which has been driven primarily by rural–urban migration. This type of migration has strong economic and social impacts on individuals at both the origins and the destinations. The study analyses the patterns and impacts of rural–urban migration based on the migration motives of rural households. The difference-in-differences approach is applied to identify migration’s impact on the welfare of migrant households in rural areas based on migration motives. The study uses Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS) data from 2007 and 2014, which consists of 2007 household samples spread over 13 provinces. Migration is found to have a positive and significant impact on migrant household welfare based on investment motives, but an insignificant result regarding the impact of migration based on risk-coping motives. Also found is the difference in migration patterns between the two migration motives.

Serang is one regency in Banten Province which is located near to Jabodetabek, the largest metropolitan area in Indonesia. The economic growth at its periphery has a negative impact on the decreasing of rice field in the regency. Objectives of this research are: (1) to analyze decreasing of rice field in Serang Regency from 2006 to 2018 and to project land-use change in 2030, and (2) to identify spatial distribution pattern of rice field in Serang Regency. Land-use change was conducted by ArcGIS10.3 using Landsat images. Identification of spatial distribution pattern of rice field was conducted by Moran and LISA (Local Indicator of Spatial Autocorrelation). Meanwhile, land-use change projection was conducted using CA-Markov. Results show that during 2006-2018 there has been an increase of built-up area (7,295 hectares) and decreasing of rice field from 60,949 hectares to 54,232 hectares. A larger decreasing rice field occurred at districts located at the eastern part of Serang Regency. The result of land-use change projection shows the increase of built-up area and rice field conversion in Serang Regency in 2030. Decreasing rice field in the long term may threaten food security at the local and regional level.

The Bogor-Depok-Bekasi (Bodebek) region is a suburb of the Capital City of Jakarta located in West Java Province and part of the West Java development area (WP) 1, this region has experienced rapid regional development and economic growth due to the urbanization process in Jakarta. The development of this region was marked by the growth of Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) of 42.08% and population increase of 19.54% during the period 2010-2016. However, developments in the Bodebek region have led to the formation of sprawl areas in several areas, leading to unsustainability and leading to the conversion of agricultural land. This study aims to 1) Identify and project Gross Domestic Regional Products (GDRP) growth and population based on a growth model approach using using simple regression equation; 2) Identify the spatial pattern of built-up areas in the Bodebek region by using the Moran index and the Local Indicator of Spatial Association (LISA); and 3) Identify development patterns in the Bodebek region using cluster analysis. The results of this study indicate that built-up areas in the Bodebek region are concentrated (clustered) in the core urban area of the Bodebek Region and its surroundings. In addition, population and GDRP growth in the Bodebek region follow the saturation growth model. Based on the result of cluster analysis, there are 3 clusters in the Bodebek region based on social, economic, population and land use data.

Jabodetabek and Greater Bandung areas experiencing the phenomenon of urban expansion which has caused both metropolitan areas to be more connected and become a mega-urban area by a corridor through a conurbation process. Karawang regency is part of the region in the Jakarta-Bandung mega-urban corridor. Vegetated lands in Karawang Regency are threatened by land conversion as a result of the Jakarta-Bandung conurbation process which tends to trigger the formation of the Jakarta-Bandung Mega-Urban Region. The increasing population in Karawang Regency has increasingly triggered the conversion of vegetated lands into built-up lands so that it can cause the region to be prone to anthropogenic disasters such as flood because of water catchment areas that reduced. The aims of this study are to analyze the land cover changes that occured in Karawang Regency in 2005–2015 and 2015–2025 and mapping the floodprone areas in Karawang Regency. Land cover changes analysis is carried out by overlapping Landsat Imagery of land cover in the 2005 and 2015 and 2015 and 2025 based on projection results using CA-Markov method. Mapping the floodprone areas is carried out by a Weighted Overlay process on variables or factors that are considered influential on the occurrence of floods. Karawang Regency has experienced an increase in land use change, especially changes in vegetated lands to built-up lands from year to year. Flood-prone areas analysis result in Karawang Regency show that most of the total area of Karawang Regency is classified as high and moderate classification flood-prone areas.

Cekungan Bandung Urban Region is a national strategic area from the point of economic interest. Rapid economic growth in the region has led to increased population growth and Built-up land use. Increased use of built up land in urban areas can cause urban sprawl which can have serious impacts that will damage the structure and function of urban area ecosystems, thus hampering the development of regional sustainability. Landscape Metrics can be used to analyze the urban form of the Cekungan Bandung Area in time series from 1983-2015 so that it can identify the changing trends. The results of the analysis show that during this period urban growth in the Cekungan Bandung Area showed a positive trend with a compact, connected, un-fragmented and near-square urban form. Being a concern of Patch Density (PD) and CONTIG values because it shows an increasing number of patches so that patches are more fragmented and the distance between the built up patches shows the trend is increasingly scattered on the edges of the Cekungan Bandung Area which can cause urban sprawl.

The internet penetration on young villagers gives rise to question about its effects on the social interaction and behavior patterns as it accelerates the interaction with the wider network. However, the internet could possibly decrease both the social interaction with local people at the village and the dependency toward native villagers as internet utilization allows the users to be more selective in terms of interactions according to their interests. This research aims to examine the impacts of the Internet through a dystopian view by comparing the degrees of senses of place, participation in local activities, and social capital among internet and non-internet users using a statistical approach. The analysis of variance and linear regression were employed in the present study. The results revealed that the internet did strengthen both broad and local social capital. It also supported young villager’s participation in local activities. Nevertheless, the internet was observed to decline the villager’s sense of place, especially the desire to remain a resident in the native village. Better access to information and network gained by the users elevated their chances to move outside the village when better opportunities were observed elsewhere.
