He received an MD, FESCMID Degree in Medicine (1977), with a specialization in Infectious Diseases (1981), Internal Medicine (1985), and Civil Protection (1986).
Currently, he is Director of the Clinical and Research Infectious Disease Department and an Infectious Disease Unit at the National Institute for Infectious Diseases “Lazzaro Spallanzani” in Rome.
He is a Contract Professor at La Sapienza and TorVergata Universities and Professor of Hygiene at the Unicamillus.
He was (2012-2014) President of SIMPIOS (Italian Multidisciplinary Society for the Prevention of Healthcare associated Infections).
Currently, he is co-leader of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) Emerging Infection Taskforce and Chair of the International Affairs SubCommittee of ESCMID, EurMID ID Su of the European Board of Infectious Diseases of the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) and President of the Multidisciplinary Joint Committee- Infection Control of UEMS.
He was a member of the ESCMID ID Subcommittee.
He was a WHO clinical and IPC consultant in Lagos, Nigeria for the 2014 Ebola epidemic.
His clinical and research interests focus on emerging infections and on severe, healthcare-acquired, and systemic infections, particularly those caused by multidrug-resistant organisms.
He is the author of 332 articles in peer-reviewed journals and of several chapters in infectious disease books.
He is Editor-in-Chief of Infectious Disease Reports.
