Zsuzsanna Győri PhD, Head of the Centre of Excellence for Sustainability Impacts in Business and Society (CESIBUS) and associate professor at the Faculty of Finance and Accountancy of Budapest Business School. She teaches courses on Business Ethics, Responsible and Sustainable Company and Entrepreneurship. Her research fields include corporate social responsibility, sustainability, values-based banking, entrepreneurs with disabilities, as well as values-driven business. Recent publications include The Current State of CSR in Hungary (book chapter at Springer, 2021), Long and winding road? The 2020–2021 global pandemic has brought significant changes to social and economic life. Companies must begin to rethink their business models and values to meet these new challenges. Given the process of intermediation, which has an indirect and catalytic impact, banks have a responsibility and opportunity to transform the economy by, for example, lending to projects that encourage decarbonization and/or green energy. The purpose of this paper is to examine the MagNet Hungarian Community Bank’s approach as a values-based bank in order to compare how the operation of the bank differs from that of traditional ones—even if these apply the Corporate Social Responsibility approach. The findings of an exploratory study of MagNet’s responsible and sustainable way of doing business can help other sectors and companies cope with the global crisis and be a part of the transition to an inclusive, fair, and decarbonised economy. The data for this study were collected using semi-structured interviews with eleven bankers and three customers of MagNet Bank in 2019, as well as bank documents. Using this information, we created a business model for the bank, using the Business Model Canvas method. Within the business model we highlighted how MagNet Bank integrates principles of the Global Alliance for Banking on Values, with the aim of truly integrating sustainability into the core of their corporate genetic makeup, instead of as a partial or insincere measure. With the projection of the models onto each other, we emphasize the role of values in the business model. The combination of the models indicates potential learning points for the further development and long-term success of the bank and serves as an example of good practices for others. This is especially relevant when considering the greater need for improved crisis and risk management due to the pandemic and for the integration of sustainability considerations into business operations which have increased the impetus in the financial sector towards sustainability.

In this chapter the different drivers of CSR policy and activities are highlighted, and the present state of CSR in Hungary is described. The chapter is structured in the following way: after a short introduction to CSR in general and in the EU (first part), the study introduces the history and present state of CSR policy in Hungary, which has been highly influenced by EU-level policy and Hungary’s EU membership. This (second) part presents the main sources of legislation: especially the Hungarian National Action Plan on CSR. Afterwards it discusses the Action Plan’s main topics and priorities, as well as its connections to the EU-level CSR policy, and finally describes to what extent the Action Plan meets the expectations of the business sector. Furthermore, an explanation is provided as to why responsible employment constitutes the main vertical priority of the Action Plan, and why economic development and environmental protection related issues are given lesser importance. The third part of the chapter reviews recent research on the main topics, motivators and obstacles of CSR in the Hungarian business sector. The emergence of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the issue of sustainability as such have enabled companies to take a holistic approach to CSR and have also provided new challenges for them to meet. In the scope of the pertaining discussion, explicit and implicit forms of CSR are distinguished. In the fourth part of the chapter, diverse trends of sustainability reporting are described in their capacity as the main communication and disclosure tool of CSR. During the economic crisis many companies discontinued to issue such reports, but the topic got a new impetus when sustainability reporting was linked with the EU legislation at the end of 2016, when Hungary adopted the Directive on disclosure of non-financial and diversity information (2014/95/EU). Finally, it is observed that in Hungary the pressure from stakeholders is weak, and they expect increased state-level intervention and control in CSR issues. Furthermore, companies’ motivational drivers are not clear: business case related considerations seem to preserve their continued importance. As for international initiatives, SDGs are the newest and they have been gaining significance since their appearance; even so the shift from explicit to implicit CSR is only partly visible.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore and analyse the barriers entrepreneurs with disabilities (EWD) face when establishing their own enterprises, as well as the supporting factors in starting and running a business. Design/methodology/approach This is an explorative study. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews with ten Hungarian entrepreneurs with physical disabilities or sight-loss, during the summer of 2018. Findings The paper classifies the barriers and supporting factors, as personal, economic and social. Based on the perceptions of the entrepreneurs, personal characteristics, identity and various types of family support play an important role in becoming entrepreneurs, but the entrepreneurial ecosystem generally is not favourable in Hungary, and there are no special support programmes focussing on EWD. Research limitations/implications Sample size is a serious limitation: the ten entrepreneurs do not represent in any sense the entire EWD community in Hungary, so the patterns found cannot be considered a generally valid picture. Originality/value The article contributes to the literature on entrepreneurship and disabilities, especially through the systematic review of the possible barriers and supporting factors and to the existing empirical body of knowledge by shedding light on the barriers and supporting factors in a rarely investigated region, in Central Europe: Hungary.
