After more than a year in a pandemic world, more than 171 million people worldwide have been infected and over 3.5 million have died. The number of those who have suffered mentally due to the pandemic is well above this number. The virus, lockdowns, forced quarantines, and problems related to jobs and everyday functioning have left their mark on mental health. Additionally, the massive spread of COVID-19 content of varying quality in social media is exacerbating this impact. On the other hand, in times of social distancing, these media are an important link with other people and a source of social support. The impact of the COVID-19 content in social media still requires further exploring. This influence on mental health may also vary geographically. There are more and more reports of discrimination against Asians due to COVID-19. We conducted a survey during lockdown in which 1664 respondents took part. After analyzing the impact of COVID-19 content in social media on the level of life satisfaction, anxiety, and depression, we compared this impact between European and Asian respondents. The results showed that dealing with these contents affects the level of anxiety, depression, and life satisfaction. Although most often these relations turned out to be negative, we have also identified those indicating a positive impact. This was particularly noticeable among Asian respondents, who additionally showed a lower relationship between reading COVID-19 content and their mental well-being than European respondents.

With a broad adaptation of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in recent years, machine learning (ML) has encountered an increasing popularity in various aspects of business, science and individual life. We proposed a research question on possibilities and threat that machine learning tools may bring to psychological studies. We analyzed the current state of the art to provide contemporary adaptations and scope of implementation of ML into psychological research. The most popular ML languages and frameworks have been provided. Then, we defined core pros and cons of these deployment tools. Finally, we have presented a SWOT analysis for ML in psychology. Concerning our findings, we claim that ML seems to be a promising solution for improving psychological studies in areas of diagnosis, prognosis and treatment. These applications may be used for pattern recognition that are too complex for a human researcher. Still, ML is not a mature technology and still faces important challenges. It is not well-established, accessible and user-friendly.

Systematic exposure to social media causes social comparisons, especially among women who compare their image to others; they are particularly vulnerable to mood decrease, self-objectification, body concerns, and lower perception of themselves. This study first investigates the possible links between life satisfaction, self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and the intensity of Instagram use with a social comparison model. In the study, 974 women age 18–49 who were Instagram users voluntarily participated, completing a questionnaire. The results suggest associations between the analyzed psychological data and social comparison types. Then, artificial neural networks models were implemented to predict the type of such comparison (positive, negative, equal) based on the aforementioned psychological traits. The models were able to properly predict between 71% and 82% of cases. As human behavior analysis has been a subject of study in various fields of science, this paper contributes towards understanding the role of artificial intelligence methods for analyzing behavioral data in psychology.

Obesity is a complex disease of great public health significance worldwide: It entails several complications including diabetes mellitus type 2, cardiovascular dysfunction and hypertension, and its prevalence is increasing around the world. The pathogenesis of obesity is closely related to reactive oxygen species. The role of reactive oxygen species as regulatory factors in mitochondrial activity in obese subjects, molecules taking part in inflammation processes linked to excessive size and number of adipocytes, and as agents governing the energy balance in hypothalamus neurons has been examined. Phytotherapy is the traditional form of treating health problems using plant-derived medications. Some plant extracts are known to act as anti-obesity agents and have been screened in in vitro models based on the inhibition of lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 cells and activity of pancreatic lipase methods and in in vivo high-fat diet-induced obesity rat/mouse models and human models. Plant products may be a good natural alternative for weight management and a source of numerous biologically-active chemicals, including antioxidant polyphenols that can counteract the oxidative stress associated with obesity. This review presents polyphenols as natural complementary therapy, and a good nutritional strategy, for treating obesity without serious side effects.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) are those which will bring a bright future for sustainable development by reducing an unsustainability that disturbs societies, environment, and natural resources. The rapid and multidisciplinary AI and IoT evolution, the relative novelty of the concept itself and little literature concerning their role in sustainable development goals achieving, present an area for further research. Our aim is to research AI and IoT potential and risk for reaching sustainable development, focusing on a job market. We conducted a bibliometric analysis concerning these technologies impact on sustainable development goals achieving, especially technical factors and labor market impact. Results proved that AI and IoT massive deployment brings real threats, still, opportunities and possible benefits that are sought overbalance potential risks.

The paper describes hating practices among young people. First a review of current literature was made and then a study in Poland was conducted. This study was the first phase of research including young people from Poland, India, Romania and Bulgaria. Results prove that hating activities are present among youngsters and, although some information about dealing with them is commonly known, there is still a large need for child and teenager’ education in this field.
