Recently, a growing number of Higher Education institutions have started to implement challenge-based learning (CBL) in study processes. However, despite the growing Higher Education attention to challenge-based learning, research on the method, especially in Engineering education, has not been extensively conducted and made publicly available to the community of researchers and teaching practitioners. To bridge this gap, this paper provides a case analysis of implementing challenge-based learning in a Master’s degree program for engineering students, aiming to highlight the main aspects of combining challenge-based learning and Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11), namely sustainable cities and communities. The findings are consistent with previous CBL studies revealing positive benefits of implementing the method; however, the paper adds novelty by showcasing the learning pathways that emerge to learners and teachers when CBL is implemented in an SDG-11-focused course.

Lack of guidelines for implementing distance learning, lack of infrastructure, lack of competencies, and security-related problems were the challenges met during the pandemic. These challenges firstly fall on the administration of a higher education institution. To assist in solving the challenges of the pandemic for the administration of a higher education institution, the paper presents several models for the organization of the processes of distance learning. These models are as follows: a conceptual model of distance learning, a model of strategic planning of distance learning, a model of the assessment before the start of distance learning, a model of the preparation for distance learning, and a model of the process of distance learning and remote work. Student profile, lecturer profile, organizational environment, assessment, and planning of the infrastructure of information and communication technology (ICT), assessment and planning of the virtual learning environment, and assessment of distance learning competencies of participants of the study process are also considered. The developed models are based on five main processes of instructional design, i.e., analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The models provide guidelines for the administration of higher education institutions on the preparation and delivery of distance learning during the pandemic. The models were validated by 10 experts from different higher education institutions. The feasibility of the data collection instrument was determined by Cronbach’s alpha coefficient that is above 0.9.

This paper presents a framework to evaluate and develop curricula for higher education in the context of digital transformation. Developing well guided learning journeys for the digital transformation is still a major challenge for educators. The proposed VOIL competence framework is grounded in dynamic capability theory. The VOIL competence framework has been developed by relating the DIGROW digital maturity framework to the European e-competence framework. The foundational architecture and rationale of the VOIL competence framework link learning objectives to the specific challenges of digital transformation of small and medium businesses. The authors also discuss the application of the VOIL competence model for evaluating and designing self-directed and personalized learning journeys.

As the improvement in the technologies is fast and widespread, it should be used for its best. Emerging technologies like an augmented reality are used to play games when at the same time it can be the best motivating educational tool. However, augmented reality tools are not spread in schools or higher education institutions, just several apps are designed for the educational purposes. The problem is that there is no one effective model which would help to increase the efficiency of the learning process and the gap between the need of different types of using augmented reality (AR) in education and different subjects is still existing. The authors provide the model of AR for the effective learning processes.

A Semantic Web is one of the most emerging research areas nowadays. Ontology is a formal specification of the particular domain that describes a set of objects and properties that the objects might have. The development of learning objects for integrated learning environments based on Semantic Web services (SWS) are still at a very early stage. The SWS technology allows teachers to design and personalize learning objects (LO) presented for the necessary content. The aim of this paper is to outline the state-of-the-art research along those lines and to suggest a realistic way towards the educational Semantic Web. With regard to the aim we first propose a LO design (or redesign) model on service-based interoperability framework, in order to open up, share and reuse educational systems’ content and knowledge components. The research will focus on LO design and redesign by proposing ontology-driven possibilities that reflect the modularization in the educational information systems. Some brief examples of implementation on the Virtual Campus platform of the Politehnica University Timisoara are also given.
