Dr. Volker Matthias is the Head of the Department of Chemistry Transport and Modeling, Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon. His research is focused on the emissions, transport, and transformation of pollutants in the atmosphere and the application of complex three-dimensional models to get a comprehensive picture of the state of the atmosphere and its constituents. Currently, his main interests are the effects of ship emissions on air pollution and nitrogen deposition in Europe. He participated in several national and European projects and is the author of more than 80 scientific papers and contributions to books. He teaches topics related to atmospheric chemistry at the University of Hamburg and Leuphana University Lüneburg.
