Students’ approaches to learning can vary between students of different ages, genders, years, degrees, or cultural contexts. The aim of this study was to assess the approaches to learning of different students of life science degrees. The Revised Two-Factor Study Process Questionnaire (R-SPQ-2F) has been used to assess the approaches to learning of 505 students of thirteen different subjects of four different degrees at Universitat Politècnica de València in order to study the factors that influence their approaches. Results show a higher deep approach of the students. Differences were observed between subjects and gender, not related to level (bachelor or master) or year. The item reliability analysis showed a high consistency for the main scales, but not for the secondary scales of the R-SPQ-2F questionnaire. High correlation between the deep and surface scales were observed. These data can provide more information to the teachers, which may help them to develop strategies focused on promoting a deeper approach to learning for the students, more adapted to their subject, level, and year.

In a complex scenario characterized by climate change and increasing population demand, it is necessary to adopt production strategies involving a lower use of water. For this purpose, controlled deficit irrigation, CDI, strategies with an initial full irrigation covering 100 % crop evapotranspiration (ETc) followed by mild (50 %ETc) and moderate (75 %ETc) irrigation restrictions after the fruit set stage were evaluated. The study was performed during two years in two growing areas of processing tomato in Spain, using conventional and high-lycopene cultivars. With moderate levels of CDI an average saving of water of 26.1 % was achieved, but productivity was reduced on average by 10.7 %. It should be considered though, that the effect was dependent on the environment and genotype, and high-yield cultivars seemed to be more sensitive to the negative effects of moderate CDI on productivity. In contrast, mild CDI levels did not affect productivity and still entailed a water saving of 13 %. Moderate CDI levels increased soluble solids content, but this increase was not due to a higher accumulation of taste-related compounds, such as sugars and acids. Indeed, irrigation dose had no significant effect on the levels of fructose, glucose, citric and glutamic acid nor on derived variables related to tomato acceptability and CDI decreased the levels of malic acid. Considering previous results, mild CDI strategies would be preferred to continuous deficit irrigation strategies as the former contribute to reduce the use of water, an increasingly scarce resource, avoiding negative impacts on productivity, a key parameter to promote farmer adoption of CDI strategies.

The effect of controlled deficit irrigation (CDI) on the accumulation of carotenoids, polyphenols and l-ascorbic acid was studied in conventional and high lycopene tomato cultivars. Plants were initially irrigated to cover 100%ETc and after the fruit set phase, the dose was reduced to 75% or 50% of ETc. CDI had no significant effect on the accumulation of carotenoids, while it increased the levels of the hydroxycinnamic acids chlorogenic and ferulic acids, the flavonoid rutin and l-ascorbic acid. Nevertheless, there were important interactions and this effect was highly dependent on the year and site of cultivation. Certain growing areas would be more favorable to supply high quality markets, and, fortunately, CDI would maximize polyphenol (100–75%ETc) and l-ascorbic acid (100–50%ETc) in these areas. A combination of the best genotype and growing area with CDI would offer high quality products, preserving a scarce resource: water.

The accumulation of polyphenols and l-ascorbic acid was evaluated under conventional (integrated pest management, IPM) and organic farming, as means to increase the accumulation of chemoprotective compounds. The effect of genotype was considerably higher than the growing system, in fact it is determining. 'Kalvert', a high-lycopene cultivar, outstood for the accumulation of most polyphenols, though low-carotenoid cultivars with high accumulation were also detected. Organic farming significantly increased the levels of caffeic acid by 20%, but reduced those of ferulic acid and naringenin by 13% and 15% respectively. A strong interaction with the environment was detected: in Navarra the differences were limited, while in Extremadura lower contents of ferulic acid and higher contents of chlorogenic acid and rutin were found in organic farming for certain cultivars. The effect of organic farming on l-ascorbic acid was dependent on cultivar and environment and it only led to an increase in Extremadura by 58%.
