Baloyi Magezi Elijah holds a PHD in Practical Theology from the University of Pretoria. He is a full professor with a C2 NRF Rating in the Research Institute for Theology and Religion, Unisa. He is a former chairperson of the Department of Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Research and his research includes gender imbalances in the African context, marriage and premarital counselling in the African context, the Africanization and decolonization of knowledge, and the indigenization of knowledge and others. Currently, his research, which he is conducting with the Center of Theological Inquiry in Princeton, USA, is on decolonizing African funeral traditions and culture. This project is a collaboration between theology, psychology and philosophy. He is a CPSC-qualified pastoral counsellor and a director member of that body.
