Festivals generate huge amounts of waste during a short period of time, usually in three to four days. Single-use packaging is one of the dominant waste streams at the festivals. In order to minimize single-use plastic packaging waste generation and negative impacts on the environment, outdoor festivals apply alternative reusable cup systems and strategies. However, little studies have been made on how different reusable beverage cup reuse models can affect material circularity within certain festivals, and how it contributes to cup damage and loss. This article presents the results of a pilot study of different reusable cup reuse models within seven Lithuanian summer outdoor festivals. Three different models were applied and tested: A—only reusable cups, non-refundable model; B—only reusable cups, with deposit-refund; C—a mixed system of reusable cups with deposit-refund and of single-use cups. Material flow analysis (MFA) was performed, and the Materials Circularity Indicator (MCI), developed by Ellen MacArthur Foundation, was calculated to study the applied models. According to the findings, refund models (B, C models) have lower rates of damaged and lost cups compared to non-refundable reusable cup reuse model (A model). This paper shows that different reuse models provide different damage, loss and return rates of reusable cups. The data presented can aid decision-makers who need to choose a reuse model for a certain event.

Despite the significant reduction of phosphorus (P) discharge in the Baltic Sea in the last decades, obtained through the implementation of some approaches within the Helsinki Convention, eutrophication is still considered the biggest problem for the Baltic Sea environment. Consequently, the reduction of P load is an urgent need to solve, but the complexity of both the environmental and legislative context of the area makes this process difficult (more than in the past). Eutrophication is an intricate issue requiring a proper framework of governance that is not easy to determine in the Baltic Sea Region where the needs of several different countries converge. To identify the most suitable strategy to reduce the eutrophication in the Baltic Sea, the InPhos project (no. 17022, 2018–2019, funded by the European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT) Raw Materials) adopted a holistic approach considering technical, political, economic, environmental and social aspects of P management. With the aims to raise awareness about the P challenge, foster the dialogue among all the stakeholders, and find solutions already developed in other countries (such as Germany and Switzerland) to be transferred in the Baltic Sea Region, the InPhos project consortium applied the methodology proposed in this paper, consisting of three main phases: (i) analysis of the available technologies to remove P from waste streams that contribute to eutrophication; (ii) analysis of the main streams involving P in Baltic Sea countries to highlight the potential of more sustainable and circular P management; (iii) study of the current context (e.g., already-existing initiatives and issues). This approach allowed us to identify four categories of recommendations and practical actions proposed to improve P management in the Baltic Sea region. During the project, the consortium mainly addressed social aspects. Following steps beyond the project will be more quantitative to determine the techno-economic feasibility of circular P management in selected demo cases in the region.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are toxic, persistent and bio-accumulative substances that have been included into the Stockholm Convention due to their hazardous properties. While large efforts have been made in the past decades to phase-out closed systems containing PCBs, open systems have received much less attention. In Lithuania, too, transformers and capacitors (closed systems) have already been inventoried and mostly collected and destroyed, but PCBs in open systems, mainly in buildings, have not been investigated. Therefore, this article presents estimates of probable PCB amounts and distribution in buildings in the country. According to theoretical calculations, about 1,900 t of PCBs could be brought into Lithuania and used in closed, partially closed and open systems. It is most probable that PCBs under the trade name Sovol, produced in Russia, constituted the majority of PCBs in open systems, i.e. some 400 t. There are about 8,600 apartment houses and 51,950 various public buildings with a big probability to contain PCBs. Nowadays, hazardous substances such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are still being used and released in steel plate priming processes. These releases might have severe negative impacts on the environment. One of the well-established methods for the evaluation of these impacts is the life cycle assessment method. In this study, life cycle assessment (LCA) was used to justify product substitution in a Lithuanian company due to regulatory concerns. In this study, life cycle impacts of this substitution were assessed by using LCA methodology. The results, within the mentioned uncertainties, indicated that the substitution to the water based primer paint was beneficial in all environmental impact categories. Waste management is a matter of concern to all countries. It is important both in an urban and in a rural context, being especially acute in the former. Yet, despite the importance of solid waste management in the urban environment, the ways in which many municipalities across the world handle the issue show that there is much room for improvement. The ever-growing amounts of solid waste being produced across the world, especially in developing countries, are mostly due to problems such as lack of policies and financing, as well as the non-availability of irregular services. They compel many local authorities to simply dispose waste, instead of managing it. But even though much is known about individual approaches and methods to manage municipal waste, there is a lack of research which specifically looks at integrated urban waste management. The paper addresses this need by reviewing the state of the art on municipal solid waste management in a sample of developing countries and rapidly growing regions. The paper has identified the fact that the wide range of approaches and available technologies in the field of urban waste management are not being fully used. Also, there is a general lack of governance in this field, which makes it difficult to use waste management systems for improved urban ecological infrastructure. The paper, which pays special attention to experiences from Latin America (with a special focus on Brazil), Asian countries as well as the European Union new Member States (the Baltic States), documents and presents some of their experiences, which may be useful to other developing countries and rapidly growing regions.

At present, the Baltic Sea region (BSR) possesses great disparities in the methods used to handle and process waste. While some countries recover most of the waste they produce, a number of other nations are lagging behind. Such disparity needs to be addressed to accommodate a more sustainable solution to waste management issues. The paper discusses how universities together with other research institutions find their prominent role here. A regional project 'RECO Baltic 21-Tech' (partly funded by Baltic Sea Region Program 2007-2013) serves as an example of mutual benefits: universities via professional research and education contribute to a sustainable waste management in the region, at the same time gaining interesting topics for research, possibilities for capacity building and curricula enrichment for students.

Changes in production processes and products that result in improvement of environmental, economic and social performance of enterprises are an important element of the overall process towards more sustainable production. The aim of this article is to demonstrate the application of cleaner production and eco-design as sustainable production tools to improve the environmental efficiency of milk processing industry. Milk processing industry is one of the largest and dynamically developing branches of industry in the world. The main impact of milk processing industry on the environment is related to energy and water consumption, and waste and wastewater generation. A number of potential solutions to improve the environmental performance of milk processing industry, to reduce energy and resources consumption are analysed: substitution of cleaning agent in the milk receiving bar for washing of milk tankers with the specialised acidic detergent, integration of the automated CIP washing system in the butter bar, implementation of water recycling system to collect warm (35 °C) water, integration of the membrane technologies for the evaporation process and the use of filtrate received during the condensation for steam generation in the boiler house. Finally, an eco-design solution for cans of milk products is presented. All these proposals have been implemented in the milk processing company.

The paper provides an overview of EIA system applications and assesses its effectiveness in Lithuania. A combination of archival research and quantitative/qualitative analysis was used to identify the main shortcomings of the EIA process in Lithuania: subjectivity in forecasting environmental effects, insufficient consideration of alternatives, politicisation of the process and incompetence of authorities involved. The research revealed that a thorough knowledge of EIA procedures and legal requirements may be a solution to these problems, especially when the stages related to forecasting the effects and evaluating the results are strictly reserved for recognized experts. The work concludes on the suggestions to involve in EIA process relevant authorities and to increase the competence of EIA practitioners.
