Tourist destinations are increasingly coming across multiple social, economic, cultural, and environmental challenges corroborated with a great urgency for sustainable development. In this context, the European Commission has launched in 2013 a unitary system of indicators for sustainable management of tourism destinations, called The European Tourism Indicators System (ETIS). More specifically, ETIS was configured initially with a total of 27 core indicators and 40 additional (optional) indicators. The purpose of this paper is to present the difficulties and challenges encountered in the application of ETIS, having as a case study, the county of Braşov, located almost entirely in the Romanian Carpathians. In this regard, a testing technique has been designed through an innovative Group Decision Support System (GDSS) that is applied to our destination. The results show that the selection of ETIS indicators is a flexible process that must be adequate with the particularities of each destination taking into account both the needs of the stakeholders, the information that is useful to them, and the existence and periodicity of the data available. Also, in some cases, when the available indicators are insufficient, additional indicators have to be introduced, and they must be subsequently adapted to the needs and specifics of the destination.

The Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) is an internationally standardized method for measuring the economic contributions of tourism to an economy. In 2015, Statistics Iceland published new TSA data as a result of a collaborative project with Icelandic Tourism Research Centre (ITRC), which was in charge of data compilation. Also, one year earlier ITRC proposed a number of recommendations in order to make the Icelandic TSA more compliant with international standards endorsed in 2008 by World Tourism Organization. The purpose of this study was to investigate the progress towards fulfilling the compliance with international standards following those recommendations. This is necessary for having a sort of follow-up by certifying to what extent the compliance was or was not achieved. In this regard a self-assessment scheme has been employed by establishing some levels of compliance with those recommendations. The findings suggest that while little more than a half of the recommendations (concerning TSA compilation issues) have been implemented, such advancement might be highly compromised due to lack of data sources. More, the study revealed that any country deciding to have a TSA more compliant with international standards should also adopt an assessment of its progress in such exercise.

The term statistics has several meanings. It could be an activity of collection, organization, analysis, and interpretation of data. It could refer to figures and numbers characterizing different phenomena. Statistics could also designate a discipline which has its own methods of research. Meanwhile, statistics are applied to different fields of studies including social sciences such as economics, sociology, and geography. Tourism, as a distinct activity, also relies on quantitative data and information observed from a phenomenon. However, due to its nature as an economic activity, the measurement of it has challenged statisticians and economists since the 1930s (Smith and Massieu 2005). Sufficient and adequate data generate credible statistics enabling one to undertake different types of analysis of tourism (UNSD-UNWTO 2008: 1). Some scholars consider that the way statistics has been used in tourism research and the degree to which it has been applied have largely depended on the qual ...

The Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) is the method for measuring the economic contribution of tourism to a nation's economy approved by the United Nations and other authoritative international organizations. While a considerable number of countries have developed TSAs, no programme has been proposed for determining how closely a given TSA conforms to the United Nations standards. The purpose of this paper is to present a programme for ascertaining the consistency of a given TSA with the United Nations standards and to apply this programme to a long-standing TSA, the United States Travel and Tourism Satellite Account (USTTSA). The results of this application are summarized and differences between the USTTSA and the United Nations standards are highlighted. The authors find that the programme is comprehensive, feasible in application and can improve the development, interpretation and comparisons of TSAs across countries.

This paper analyses the factors influencing wages in the hotel and restaurant sector of Romania on the basis of a macroeconomic and regional analysis of gross investments and employment in the tourism industry. The authors constructed a pool data model to investigate the existing relationship between real wages, labour productivity and gross investments in the eight development regions of Romania during 1999–2007. The results may be useful to policy makers and professionals seeking to understand the mechanism of the tourism labour market in Romania and, further, to mobilize the labour force in the sector in order to obtain better results by using appropriate instruments adapted to domestic labour.
