This study examines the influence of firm cluster collaboration and the utilization of big data on the expansion of open innovation. We also investigate the effect of open innovation on business performance and test the moderating effect of social capital. We surveyed 409 global firms (193 large enterprises and 216 medium enterprises) located in Asia, Europe, North America, and Africa over a one-month period. We limited the scope of the survey to employees working at the level of team leader (or executive) or above in the R&D department. This study used SmartPLS (Version 3.3.3) to perform the statistical analysis. Our results indicated that, first, corporate cluster collaboration had a positive effect on the expansion of open innovation. Second, firm use of big data had a positive effect on the expansion of open innovation. Third, firm expansion of open innovation had a positive effect on business performance (market and financial performance). Fourth, in the relationship between cluster collaboration and open innovation expansion, social capital had a negative moderating effect. This research proved that cluster collaboration and big data could accelerate open innovation, ultimately improving business performance. However, there are limitations regarding SEM analysis.

As the popularity of K-pop grows, the industry is contributing to the positive perceptions of South Korea’s overall national brand value. This has led to it being considered a strategic industry worth cultivating. However, many people are unsure of its sustainability. To address this, our study investigates the factors that are key to the industry’s success—K-pop industry success factors—and their relationship with sustainability (SNS citizenship behavior and tourist behavioral intention). The study surveyed 1247 global viewers (eight countries) who listen to K-pop via TV, radio, and the Internet, watch K-pop videos on YouTube, and search information related to K-pop on SNS. The collected data were analyzed using two statistical techniques: structural equation model (SEM) analysis and fuzzy set-quality comparative analysis (fsQCA). (1) According to the SEM analysis, of the K-pop success factors, three factors demonstrated a statistically significant positive influence on SNS citizenship behavior: casting, producing/promotion, and content. (2) SNS citizenship behavior showed a statistically significant positive influence on tourist behavioral intention. (3) According to the fsQCA results, casting, training, social media, content, and SNS citizenship behavior were commonly derived at least three times, indicating that these are key factors impacting tourist behavioral intention. (4) In summary, results confirmed that, with the exception of producers, the five K-pop success factors, casting, training, producing/promotion, social media, and content, are crucial to sustainability and to increasing tourist behavioral intention.

This study investigated the influence of the perceived value of ballet performances (personal, artistic, and sociocultural) on consumer satisfaction, trust, and intention to rewatch (revisit). Participants included 240 Americans, 272 South Africans, and 227 Koreans, for a total of 739 (female = 50.2%) who watched a ballet performance in the last two years (2019–2020). Measures included perceived value of ballet performances (personal, artistic, and sociocultural) consumer satisfaction, trust, and intention to rewatch (revisit). Following structural equation model analysis (using SmartPLS) we found perceptions of personal, artistic, and sociocultural value to enhance consumer satisfaction. Sociocultural value had an enhanced consumer trust, while personal and artistic value did not. Consumer trust mediated the relationship between consumer satisfaction and intention to rewatch (revisit).

This study examined the influence of brand trust and loyalty to Korean Bangtan Sonyeondan (BTS), as perceived by global viewers who watched a BTS dance performance on TV and online. The sample consisted of 498 respondents (women = 44. 7%), with 230 Americans (women = 50%), and 268 South Africans (women = 40. 3%). They completed online surveys on brand trust and loyalty of the festival event. Structural equation modelling showed the festival event performance enhanced brand trust and loyalty. Additionally, higher festival event brand trust and loyalty reciprocally enhanced each other. Further, American tourists had little evidence of festival event performance influences on their brand loyalty, while South African tourists had a strong festival performance and brand loyalty association. The results are consistent with the view that festival performances self-market with brand trust and loyalty influences on consumers, while the selling points may vary based on audience segment.

The present study investigated the association between supervisors’ use of argumentum ad hominem or confrontational dialogue and companies’ coercive company culture on employees’ emotional exhaustion and workaholism. The survey was conducted with (non-permanent), multicultural foreign workers living in Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, and other areas in South Korea. Participants (N = 462) were non-permanent foreign workers from China (n = 131), Vietnam (n = 106), Indonesia (n = 55), Cambodia (n = 53), Philippines (n = 70), and South Africa (n = 47). Statistical analysis was conducted using a hierarchical analysis method. A post-hoc independent sample t-test revealed no average difference between the Asian and South African nationality groups. Overall, the data suggest supervisors’ use of argumentum ad hominem to predict employee emotional exhaustion overall. Further, supervisors’ use of coercive company culture explained workaholism in female but not in male employees. Supervisors’ use of argumentum ad hominem predicted workaholism among men. These findings indicate that a toxic supervision and organisational culture can be damaging to foreign workers’ psychological well-being.

We examined social network services (SNS) influence on SNS subjective norms for connectivity, perceived pleasure, and addiction. Utilising survey data of ordinary South Africans (N = 927; female = 393), collected by a global research institution (Entrust Survey) between 1 and 10 October 2019. We performed structural equation modelling to map the SNS influences on social connectivity, pleasure, and addition. Our findings indicate SNS subjective norms positively influence connectivity. Additionally, SNS subjective norms and connectivity positively influence perceived pleasure. The interactive term for SNS subjective norms, perceived pleasure, and connectivity had positive effects on SNS addiction. Therefore, the social factors of subjective norms appear to influence SNS usage, which in turn leads to behavioural changes such as seeking pleasure from their usage.

The present study analysed the factors affecting the developmental trajectories of social withdrawal during adolescence. From an ecological human development perspective, we specifically assessed the role of negative parental child-rearing attitudes and positive peer relationships on social withdrawal. First, the findings showed that negative parental child-rearing attitudes promote social withdrawal and that amicable peer relationships help decrease social withdrawal. Second, factors influencing the developmental trajectories of social withdrawal were initial value and the rate of change for peer relationships. In other words, initial value and rate of change for peer relationships significantly reduced the developmental trajectories of social withdrawal in the long term. Third, negative parental child-rearing attitudes did not have a significant influence on the developmental trajectories of social withdrawal. We discuss how important relationship factors affect the developmental trajectory of social competence during adolescence.

The present study examined aspects of job security, leadership risk (corporate-centric management style, short-term performance-orientedness, and subordinate authoritarianism), emotional exhaustion, and workaholism among 1 009 casual foreign workers from multicultural families living in South Korea. The nationalities of the casual employees included South Africa (n = 85), Cambodia (n = 124), China (n = 274), Indonesia (n = 135), Philippines (n = 166), and Vietnam (n = 225); with 45% and 55% female participants. Statistical analysis was conducted using a hierarchical analysis method. An independent sample t-test revealed no average difference between the Asian and African (South African) nationality groups. Corporate job security reduced emotional exhaustion and reinforced workaholism in the present sample. Additionally, corporate-centric management styles and subordinate authoritarianism moderated the relationship between workaholism and job security. However, the three leadership risk components did not moderate the relationship between job security and emotional exhaustion. We conclude that corporate culture might be an overarching influence on perceptions of job security and work engagement of non-permanent foreign employees.

We empirically analyze the effects of a company’s community of practice and knowledge management system on knowledge management activities and management performance. We gather data by administering surveys to large- and mid-sized companies in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and other regions of Korea. The company samples collected are statistically analyzed using methods: hierarchical analysis and structural equation modeling. First, the community of practice has a positive effect on the knowledge management system. Second, both community of practice and knowledge management system positively affect knowledge management activities, of which the latter has a greater effect. Third, both factors also positively impact innovation performance, of which community of practice has a greater effect. The knowledge management system is not statistically significant in the structural equation model. Fourth, knowledge management activities positively affect innovation performance. The findings highlight the importance of refining and developing knowledge-based processes to lead an entire organization to higher innovation performance.

This study assessed the impact of the artistic program of the Winter Olympics opening ceremony event on international spectators’ national image branding of the host country and their intention to visit the host nation. We surveyed a total of 600 international spectators of the South Korea PyeongChang Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony (150 Filipino, 150 Americans, 150 British, and 150 South Africans; 50% female) on their perceptions of quality of the opening ceremony, national image branding, and their intention to visit the host country. Results from hierarchical analysis indicated that the quality of the artistic program of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics opening ceremony (content of expression, form of expression, and narrative of nation) predicted perceptions of host country national image and behavioural intentions to visit. From these findings, we conclude that the artistic program of the opening ceremony of an Olympic event is a valuable opportunity to help international spectators to better understand the host country culture, and for influencing their tourism intentions.

The aim of this study was to predict perceived life satisfaction of multicultural African families living in South Korea in terms of their fluency in the Korean language, government support for education, and the experience of discrimination. A total of 64 family members (29 women, 45.3%) completed measures of life satisfaction, Korean language fluency, public welfare assistance, and social discrimination. A hierarchical regression analysis determined that life satisfaction was higher among those with fluency in the Korean language and low or no reliance on public welfare programs. Experience of social discrimination was unrelated to life satisfaction. Host-country language fluency and livelihood self-sustenance seem to be key resources for families with immigrant spouses.

This study examined psychological well-being influences of personal factors on regular sponsorship of, or donation to, African children living in Africa. Study participants (N = 597) were 338 Koreans (50.3% female, n = 170) and 259 Chinese (56.8% female, n = 147). They responded to measures of psychological well-being, individual social responsibility, social impression management, and subjective norms. Following multiple group analyses applying structural equation modelling, subjective well-being influenced psychological well-being among the Korean donors; whereas social responsibility influenced psychological well-being among the Chinese donors. In both the Korean and Chinese groups, psychological well-being was associated with an increased regular sponsorship of African children. Latent ethno-cultural personal orientations appear to explain psychological well-being with donation activity.

This study investigated the effects of perceived values (personal, artistic, and sociocultural) of tourists’ attitude and behavioural intention to visit Africa. Participants were tourists (176 men and 124 women) who visited the Museum of African Art based on Jeju Island in the Republic of Korea. Results, following hierarchical analysis, suggest personal value and sociocultural value rather than artistic value to predict tourists’ attitude and behavioural intention to visit Africa. The findings of this study imply that personal and sociocultural predispositions lead to the tourists’ likely adoption of a tourist destination beyond familiarities with artistic works associated with the destination. Tourism promotion campaigns aimed at promoting African as a destination should customise messages to address the personal and sociocultural predispositions of would-be international tourists.

We examined how psychic distance moderates the association of South Korean chief executive officers’ (CEOs’) knowledge and quality management with their predisposition to invest in African technology and innovation markets. Participants were current and prospective South Korean African business investment senior managers (n = 64; 20 females; mean years in management = 19.4) or not (n = 187; 97 females, mean years in management = 15.9). Hierarchical regression analysis was used to analyse the relationships. Only quality management was significantly related to technology commercialisation capabilities and innovation performance among managers with African investment experience. However, both quality and knowledge management were significantly related to the outcomes among managers without African investment experience. The effect of psychic distance might be explained by risk averseness, in that those without experience of African investment might be with more risk avoidant than those with such experience.

This study examined the comparative advantages of prestige service labelling (VIP), online marketing, and image differentiation when applied as marketing strategies to build tourist loyalty as a component of citizenship behaviour. The participants were 220 African tourists attending the World Club Dome Korea 2017 festival event. Following data collection, we conducted a hierarchical regression analysis to determine how VIP, online marketing, and image differentiation influenced tourist social networking service (SNS) citizenship behaviour. The results suggest that VIP and image differentiation to positively predict SNS citizenship behaviour, whereas this was not the case for online marketing. VIP had a higher influence on tourist SNS citizenship behaviour than image differentiation. In summary, strategies to attract tourists with high purchasing power should include prestige service branding with clear image differentiation. This exclusivity could be applied to online ticketing services for their added value to tourism promotion.

We examined expectation conformation and word-of-mouth marketing intention among international tourists (177 white; 138 black; and 98 Asian) who experienced a tourism promotion cultural festival event; taking into account their personal, artistic, and societal cultural values. We applied multiple regression analysis to predict expectation conformation and word-of-mouth marketing intention from the tourists’ personal, artistic, and societal cultural values. For the white and Asian tourists, sociocultural value predicted expectation confirmation the most. For the black tourists, personal value explained their expectation confirmation more than did sociocultural value. Culturally framed perceived values appear to influence the ways tourists respond to tourism festivals.
