With the increasing focus on the construction sector (e.g., following the European Green Deal initiative) with the aim to reduce emissions by 55% by 2030 (compared to 1990 levels), as well as achieve full decarbonisation by 2050, the built environment remains a strategic domain for the R&I (Research and Innovation) agenda. Indeed, the building and construction sector is the main contributor to greenhouse gas emissions (39% of global emissions as of 2018), highlighting the need to start a process of decarbonisation of this sector. The overall reduction in the environmental impact of building materials is achieved by establishing sustainable continuity between the end-of-life phase of the building and the production phase of individual building components. In particular, with reference to the end-of-life phase of the building (BS EN 15978: 2011), the Minimum Environmental Criteria foresee the preparation of a plan for the disassembly and selective demolition of the building, which allows the reuse or recycling of materials, building components and prefabricated elements used. According to the guidelines of a low-carbon construction design, which takes into account a circular economy, the following thesis deals with a methodological proposal to study “dry” construction systems (wood and steel). In particular, the study intends to reach the development of such an elaboration by carrying out an assessment of the environmental impact of a process of selective disassembly and demolition of steel building systems. The model is developed on the basis of a reading of the level of sustainability of emblematic case studies, appropriately identified, i.e., ‘quality’ architectures, built with ‘dry’ (steel) building systems.

In the light of recent emergencies represented by climate change and global warming, with the consequent policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, this research aims at offering a response to the need for decarbonization of anthropization processes of territories, on a building and urban scale. This study elaborates a methodology, according to an integrated qualitative-quantitative approach, which combines the strategic need for sustainable mobility with the need to enhance the value of natural and environmental interesting places, typical of the Mediterranean area and in particular the ones which represented the heart of Magna Graecia. This strategy is implemented through a growing mobility offer in recent years: sustainable cycling tourism, which is included in the wider and more widespread strategic action of greenways. However, these strategies do not often meet the interests of the public administration, which is refractory to face great costs in exchange for a hypothetical return on investment, in the long term; the result is the abandonment and degradation of territories characterized by a remarkable naturalistic, landscape and environmental value. The aim of this study, therefore, is to provide operators in the sector (public administration, Cilento National Park Authority, economic operators, etc.) with a decision-maintenance tool, through the definition of priority criteria for interventions, according to an economic sustainability approach of the intervention and adopting an integrated qualitative-quantitative methodology. The intervention, as a whole, involves a cycle path of about 600 km, passing through 70 countries of the territory. Therefore, assuming the impossibility of being carried out at the same time, as a whole, it has been divided into 23 functional lots: the methodology intends, precisely, to define the priority and necessity criteria that determine the classification of importance of the 23 routes (sub-interventions), identified in this study.

Abandoning rural areas requires promoting their repopulation. In Europe, wealth and life in these enclaves are valued. However, the current state of these houses does not meet actual needs and requires interventions to actualize current standards. Therefore, decisions in the design and execution of the works will generate a volume of construction and demolition waste (CDW), which must be managed sustainably out of respect towards its origin, the architecture, and the surrounding environment. This paper examines the prevention and management of CDW, providing control strategies and actions to monitor and plan them from the rehabilitation project itself. Some of the interventions carried out in recent years on this type of housing have been analyzed and the existing management protocols within the European Union have been reviewed, specifying their application in Mediterranean popular housing. As a result, we herein show a representative case that observes the existing reality regarding the destination of generated CDW and delves into their possibilities for use. We present these findings in order to reduce the energy cost resulting from manufacturing new materials and meeting the established sustainability and energy efficiency parameters.

In recent decades, the international scientific debate has focused on maximizing the energy performance of the building organization during the operational phase. However, the energy performance is only partially in line with the strategic environmental objectives defined by the European Commission which, with Communication 2003/302, also defined the guidelines for the drafting of the National Action Plans on Green Public Procurement (NAP GPP). Law no. 296 of 27 December 2006 provided for “... the implementation and monitoring of an Action Plan for the environmental sustainability of public administration consumption”, drawn up by the Ministry of the Environment and the Protection of Land and Sea. This work moves in the direction of identifying design strategies, relating to construction and urban restructuring, compatible with the criteria of energy and environmental sustainability provided for in the New Code of Public Procurement (Legislative Decree 50/2016), in accordance with the directives of the European Community. The parameters that define the methodological articulation (choice of case studies, scope of reference of stakeholders, etc.) orient the use of the results towards similar cases, i.e. design of urban districts located in regions with a Mediterranean climate.

The criticality related to the consumption of operational energy and related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of existing buildings is clearly decreasing in new buildings due to the strategies tested and applied in recent years in the energy retrofit sector. Recently, studies have been focusing on strategies to reduce environmental impacts related to the entire life cycle of the building organism, with reference to the reduction of embodied energy (and related greenhouse gas emissions) in building materials. As part of EEA’s European EBC project, Annex 57, a wide range of case studies have been promoted with the aim of identifying design strategies that can reduce the embodied energy and related greenhouse gas emissions of buildings. The aim of this paper is to investigate the most common construction systems in the construction industry (concrete, steel, wood) through the analysis of three contemporary architectural works, with the aim of identifying the predisposition for environmental sustainability of each technological system, thus guiding the operators in the sector towards design choices more compatible with the environmental requirements recommended by European legislation.

For sustainable development of the territory, public administrations must guarantee the efficient allocation of available resources. This is also important for the conservation and enhancement of archaeological sites, able to generate multiple effects—not only strictly cultural, but also social, environmental, and financial—in their reference area. Although today, decisions on investments to be implemented are seldom supported by logical and operational methodologies able to rationalize the selection processes. Thus, proposing and implementing survey instruments to optimize the use of funds, in the light of a technical-economic process that is valid on a methodological level—that is repeatable and not complex to use—is likely necessary. This paper proposes a multicriteria evaluation model for the choice among projects concerning archaeological sites. According to pre-established criteria, the analysis protocol is defined using the algorithms of discrete linear programming, already successfully used in urban and territorial planning. These algorithms are written in A Mathematical Programming Language (AMPL); software which allows the consideration of several—both technical and economic—constraints that the system imposes. The model is verified by a case study, highlighting its potential and limits, as well as outlining future research perspectives.

Since ancient times the hospital has always been helping shape urban individuality, mainly affecting the territory development. In the best cases hospital has designed an intelligent system of synergies and integrations with other territorial and urban functions. The work focuses on the analysis in particular of pediatric hospital buildings. The objective of the research is to ensure higher quality and efficiency for these hospital buildings, in order to obstruct the ongoing obsolescence processes and guarantee an essential service to the territory. In the hospital design sector, the quality of the space is necessary not only to ensure more exceptional comfort for the users but has beneficial effects on the children healing process. Therefore the research proposes by using a multi-criteria methodology a method for assessing the quality of pediatric hospital structures at three different levels of investigation (Urban System, Building System, and Internal Space System). The originality of the work consists of recognizing the quality as a function of three specific criteria/objectives: Humanization, Sustainability and Flexibility. This new integrated multidisciplinary approach aims at representing a useful model to support systematically the appropriate design choices.

The main objective of this research is the identification of a pediatric hospital contemporary design model, developing, at the same time, a prefabricated construction technology able to meet today’s health from building flexibility characteristics. Therefore, starting from the analysis of the evolution of architecture and health care facilities, in history, and the main aggregation methodologies used, the basic parameters have been identified on which is based the design of the pediatric ward: flexibility, modularity, environmental quality and humanization. Based on these parameters was developed a contemporary children’s hospital model that, in addition to responding to the initial requirements, could lend itself to multiple aggregation solutions. The finalization of the architectural model has determined, in addition, the need to develop a suitable construction technology, able to adapt to the requirements of flexibility on which is based the entire study: from such reflections was, therefore, experienced a basic module which is based on the design principles of precast lightweight.
