Firms engaged in remanufacturing activities generally adopt more than one recycling channel to collect more used products and gain more profits. This paper explores the optimal strategies for a retailer-dominated closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) with a triple recycling channel in the construction machinery remanufacturing context. In this special system, the retailer is the leader and authorized by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to remanufacture. Moreover, the OEM, the retailer, and the secondary market all take part in the used products collection activities. Considering the differentiation of the OEM, the retailer, and the secondary market in collecting the used construction machinery, a mathematical model of the CLSC system based on reasonable assumptions is built, the closed-form optimal pricing decisions are derived, and the optimal collection efforts allocation strategies are explored within the framework of the game theory. In addition, the impacts of the reverse logistics cost coefficient, the competing coefficient, and the buy-back price coefficient on the supply chain performance are elaborately analyzed. These achievements provide decision makers with managerial insights and offer efficient guidelines for the construction machinery remanufacturing firms to solve similar puzzles.

Due to the rising environmental pressure and economic benefit, a growing number of firms including some original equipment manufacturers and retailers are devoted into collecting and remanufacturing end of life construction machinery. Concentrating on the optimal design of a retailer oriented closed-loop supply chain network for the end of life construction machinery remanufacturing, we develop a mixed integer linear model incorporating the reverse logistics network into the forward logistics network, and apply an improved hybrid genetic algorithm, the performance of which has been evaluated by the optimization software LINGO, to solve how to optimize the structure of the closed-loop supply chain network. By conducting a real-life case study on a target construction machinery remanufacturing firm in China, our research confirms that the proposed model can successfully determine the location of different types of function centers and manage the flows of used products, various components and remanufactured products. In addition, the influence of the collection ratio and the capacity of facilities is also elaborately explored to give manage insights to the firms on future strategies making and gaining profits in the execution of this environmentally friendly practices.

In this paper, a modal interval based method is proposed to characterize the uncertainty in the quality of collected used products for a closed-loop supply chain. Triggered by an actual case in the construction machinery remanufacturing field, we establish a decent model of a remanufacturer-driven closed-loop supply chain with multi-dimensional reverse channel within the framework of game theory, which includes the supplier, the manufacturer, the retailer with authorization to remanufacture, and the third party collector. In this special remanufacturer-driven supply chain, both the retailer and the third party collector collect the used products for the remanufacturer. Considering the influence of uncertainty in the quality of used products on the buyback price and the cost of remanufacturing process, we utilize modal interval arithmetic to analyze the dynamic pricing and collection strategy of the remanufacturer. Moreover, to validate the effectiveness of the proposed modal interval based method, we compare it with the analysis under the traditional scenario based method. We confirm that the modal interval method can obtain more robust results, and the proposed model and method of our research can give guidance to the construction machinery remanufacturing firms when facing with the quality uncertainty of the collected used products in remanufacturing activities.

For the need of sustainable development, the importance of the reverse collection and remanufacturing has been widely recognized in the literature and in practice. In this paper, we analyzed three reverse channels extensively used in the remanufacturing practice, i.e. retailer collection, manufacturer collection and third party collection. The results address that the choice of single one reverse channel can hardly satisfy the demand of the construction machinery remanufacturing companies with complex market demand and the necessity of establishing multi-dimensional reverse channels which combine the application of multiple reverse channels. Specifically, considering that one remanufacturer already has an excellent forward supply chain network and suitable reverse channels to choose, we proposed a special reverse model and applied it to an actual case. According to the analysis, the conclusions can be summarized as: (1) for the remanufacturer, the third party collection is extensively necessary to him for the reduction of the expenses on establishing unnecessary reverse network, (2) the remanufacturer should make a balance between the retailer collection and third party collection to maximize the profit, while the fee paid to the third party is relatively low and the collection cost he made to the retailer collection is relatively high, the rate of the investment in third party collection could be increased in corresponding, and vice versa.
