Benzene, toluene, and total BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene) concentrations registered for one year (2016) have been determined every month for one high-density traffic area. The assessment was performed in Arad City, Romania, to evaluate these pollutants and their influence on the inhabitants’ health. The contaminants were sampled using a static sampling method and analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. Benzene was the most dominant among the BTEX compounds—the average concentrations ranged from 18.00 ± 1.32 µg m−3 in December to 2.47 ± 0.74 µg m−3 in August. The average toluene concentration over the year was 4.36 ± 2.42 µg m−3 (with a maximum of 9.60 ± 2.39 µg m−3 in November and a minimum of 1.04 ± 0.29 µg m−3 in May). The toluene/benzene ratio (T/B) was around 0.5, indicating substantial contributions from mobile sources (vehicles). The emission and accumulation of different aromatic compounds (especially benzene) could deteriorate the urban air quality. The lifetime cancer risk (LTCR) for benzene was found to be more than 10−5 in winter, including the inhabitants in the “probable cancer risk” category.

The working conditions in a slaughterhouse are difficult because of the low temperatures, high humidity, and little natural light. Therefore, in these facilities, there is a high demand in the maintenance of strict hygiene rules. Lately, the new SARS-CoV-2 pandemic situation has brought new challenges in the meat industry, as this sector has to maintain its operability to supply the meat and meat products demanded by the consumers. In this challenging period, the safety of the workers is as important as keeping the high demands for the safety of the meat and meat products along with consumer confidence. This paper aims to give an overview of the risks associated with the SARS-CoV-2 virus transmission between the workers in slaughterhouses and to evaluate the stability and infectivity in the working environment of these facilities. Considering the persistence of this virus on different surfaces and the environmental conditions affecting its stability (temperature, relative humidity, and natural light), in the study we proposed several short-, medium-, and long-term preventive measures for minimizing the potential threats of the actual pandemic.

Alpha-cypermethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid that was extensively used for insect control, since the early 1980s. However, it is known that its presence in the environment has toxic effects on humans and aquatic life forms. For this reason, it is commendable for it to be removed completely from the contaminated environment. In this study, we evaluated the adsorption capacity of a marine alga for the removal of cypermethrin from water. The adsorption experiments were performed based on the batch equilibrium technique. The samples containing the pesticide were analyzed using gas chromatography with an electron capture detector, after liquid-liquid extraction in hexane. The results obtained from the kinetic adsorption studies showed that the equilibrium time was attained after 40 min. The adsorption parameters at equilibrium concentrations, obtained through the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin models, showed that the used brown marine alga has a maximum amount of adsorbed cypermethrin of 588.24 µg/g. The correlation coefficients obtained for each model prove that the Langmuir model best fits the experimental data.

The impact of the antibiotics in the environment is not well understood yet. Moreover, the total amount of antibiotics that are ending up in the environment as solid waste is not known and cannot be rigorously determined as many variables are influencing the determination of their concentration. The present article is focused on the estimation of the amount of non-prescribed antibiotics that are used in different European countries. Particular attention is paid to the class of beta-lactams, as they are responsible for a considerate share of the antimicrobial resistance. The primary purpose was the estimation of the quantity of non-prescribed antibiotics that might reach the environment as solid waste. For the present study, we used the ECDC and EUROSTAT reported data.

We build a theoretical model based on a generalization of harmonic applications of Misner-type. It results a sine-Gordon type fractal differential equation whose elliptical solutions can describe, through a convenient choice of fractal dynamic constants, various modes of drug release. Thus, the entire class of empirical models (Higuchi, Korsmeyer-Peppas, Peppas-Sahlin) describing the drug release processes can be dispensed with.

Gene therapy represents a promising method for treating genetic disorders or diseases consisting in the transfer of genetic material (DNA) to cells in order to substitute or to slow down the evolution of the defective gene in cells. Theoretical models to predict DNA release are difficult to build in the classical approach of continuous and differentiable physical quantities, due to the high number of interdependent phenomena that occur simultaneous. The article presents a theoretical model based on the fractal theory of motions in the form of Scale Relativity Theory to describe nonlinear behaviors in gene therapy. Correlations of the theoretical model with experimental data are also observed.

The issue of drug disposal, as well as the development and implementation of efficient collection strategies, represents an important concern at the highest European level. This research looks into the factors that could have an impact on the efficiency of pharmacies in collecting and disposing the medicinal waste of the population. There were 521 pharmacists from all over the country who filled in a questionnaire on their opinion/attitude related to the system of collecting and disposing the pharmaceutical waste of the population. Of the surveyed pharmacists, 16% work in pharmacies that do not collect unused/expired drugs from the population, and nearly 33% of those investigated have refused, at least once, to take the unused medicines from the people. Pharmacists’ most important reasons for refusing to collect the pharmaceutical waste were the lack of procedure, incomplete legislation, exceeding the amount contracted with the operators, and high costs. Results show that pharmacies in Romania face several deficiencies in the pharmaceutical waste collection services. The lack of implemented programs has contributed considerably to lower standards of pharmaceutical waste management in Romania. This study is the first research on this topic in Romania, a country where the management of drug-based waste generated by the population is at the beginning. The results shown in this survey can provide a reference point for competent authorities in developing and implementing a take-back program for waste medicine whose efficiency is superior to the existing ones.

Pumpkin (Cucurbita maxima) seeds are a rich source of ingredients such as aminoacids, fatty acids, minerals, and phytochemicals exhibiting nutraceutical effects on human health. In this work, partially defatted pumpkin seeds flour, a by-product obtained during the manufacture of pumpkin seeds oil, was studied as an additive for common wheat flour. We explored the physico-chemical properties as well the content in amino acids of the partially defatted pumpkin seeds. The obtained results revealed that partially defatted pumpkin seeds are a good source of protein (42.75% d.m.), lipids (12.28% d.m.), total carbohydrates (37.4% d.m.), from which crude fiber (26.64% d.m.). This by-product presents a high mineral content (mg/100g): potassium (1290), magnesium (693), iron (87.8), zinc (11.5) and copper (2.49).The partially defatted pumpkin seeds proteins contain significant amounts of essential amino acids such as valine, histidine, isoleucine, leucine, threonine and methionine.

Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamin) is a ubiquitous molecule widely distributed in nature. It is a hormone produced by the pineal gland, which plays a role in the bodys sleep cycles and it is a powerful antioxidant. It is possible to find it in several foods (fruit, rice, corn) and as food supplement. Screen-printed carbon electrode (DRP-150) and graphene modified screen-printed electrode (DRP-110GPH) were tested as sensors for the detection of melatonin using electrochemical detection (differential pulse voltammetry), at different pH values (7.4, 7.0, and 6.4). Quantitative detection of melatonin was possible, with better results when graphene modified screen-printed electrodes were used. The pH influenced the position of the peak as well, with lowering the pH moves more in the right. Both electrodes have been tested on samples of food supplements containing melatonin, with good recovery degrees.

Landfill management usually entails dealing with the production of leachate and the formation of biogas, with the related environmental and public health concerns. One element that tends not to be investigated, is the risk of a fire with the consequent emission of toxic substances, especially dioxins. This study focuses on the case of an existing landfill in which the waste is placed in cylindrical wrapped bales, and where for the purposes of this study, the burning of the waste mass was hypothesized. The Austal2000 model system was used in order to estimate the average air concentrations and the deposition values of PCDD/F.The analysis showed that a landfill may be at risk in terms of fire potential with the consequent release of dioxins. Storage in bales, for various reasons, increases this risk. The analysis of the effects show that the environment and public health would be very seriously compromised. The recovery of the chosen landfill is therefore necessary, especially given the potential dioxin release. The presented analysis wants to be a warning for decision makers who could choose to implement large bale storages without an adequate attention to fire prevention.

One of the main challenges in designing a release system is the possibility to control the release rate in order to maintain it at a constant value below a defined limit, to avoid exceeding the toxicity threshold. We propose a method of overcoming this difficulty by introducing the drug into liposomes, prior to its inclusion in the hydrogel. Furthermore, a natural cross linker (as is tannic acid) is used, instead of the toxic cross linkers commonly used, thus reducing the toxicity of the release system as a whole.

The determination of the real concentration in different pharmaceutical drugs represents a very important goal of the pharmaceutical industry. The main aim of the study was to set up a simple, cheap and rapid method in order to determine both ascorbic and acetylsalicylic acid content of effervescent tablets that could be found on the pharmaceutical market, without preliminary separation or extraction. For this purpose, a very simple and reliable clock method based on two Landolt-type systems of reactions, based on potentiometric techniques, has been developed. The method has been tested on different effervescent tablets which contain ascorbic acid and acetylsalicylic acid in different mixture ratio.

In the frame of Higuchi's type functionality, this paper presents the anisotropy influences on the drug delivery mechanisms through the joint invariant functions to the simultaneous actions of the two SL(2R) isomorphic groups. Then, a new equation for drug delivery mechanism, independent of the type of polymer matrix and/or drug, is proposed.

The presence of emerging organic micropollutants (such as pharmaceuticals) in sewage has been, for a long time, an issue of great concern within the international scientific debate. This item represents one of the main challenges related to a sustainable development, with particular concern to the public health control. While most of the work has been concentrated on their detection and the evaluation of their average level, little is known about the spatial and temporal variability of concentrations of these compounds in the effluent and its capability to affect the concentrations in time of the receiving water body. In this study, three sampling campaigns were carried out at two different wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Varese area (Northern Italy) with the aim of monitoring the occurrence of some pharmaceuticals to evaluate their removal efficiency. The detected pharmaceuticals were: Ofloxacin, Ibuprofen, Atenolol, Bezafibrate, Carbamazepine, Salbutamol, Cyclophosphamide and Hydrochlorothiazide. The results obtained, together with the analysis of the characteristics of the chemicals and of the two WWTPs, allowed evaluating the factors affecting the spatial and temporal concentration variability in effluent waters and the potential influence of this variability in driving the exposure of the aquatic ecosystems in the receiving water body.

The presence of Hürthle cells (HC) in fine needle thyroid biopsy (FNAB) is a real concern for a cytologist and also for an endocrinologist. We aimed to demonstrate if the presence of HC is associated with specific cytological features in FNAB results. This retrospective study analyzed 89 patients diagnosed with thyroid nodules, with FNAB; were two groups of patients: the study group A (HC+) (22 patients) with HC and control group B (HC-) (67 patients) with no HC; for both groups we analyzed the presence of 9 cytomorphologic features: overall cellularity, background colloid, lymphocyte infiltration, chronic inflammation, large nucleoli, small nucleoli, syncytial infiltration, nuclear pleomorphism/atypia, cellular pleomorphism. We found no statistical differences between age and gender. Nodules with diameter greater than 2 cm were present, more frequently in the group without HC, 43 (64.18%). The presence of HC is correlated with cellular pleomorphism (p=0.042) and nuclear pleomorphism (p < 0.0001) with no correlation between the other investigated parameters. The presence of colloid was correlated with the absence of HC (p= 0.014). In group with HC was a positive correlation with cellular pleomorphism and fibrosis. In the presence of fibrosis, HC was correlated with nuclear pleomorphism (p=0.03). In the group with HC without fibrosis there are more characteristic the sets with positive nuclear pleomorphism, positive large nucleoli and negative small nucleoli (p= 0.002). The presence of HC in FNAB results is associated with colloid in small amounts, associated with nodules smaller than 2 cm, correlated with cellular pleomorphism and nuclear pleomorphism. Fibrosis can be a protective feature against malignancy because cellular parameters were not significantly associated with HC except the cellular pleomorphism.
