In the context of the debate on platform economy, on the one hand, and the gig economy, on the other, this paper delineates the conceptual boundaries of both concepts to query the gig economy research included in the Web of Science database. The initial search, cutoff date February 2020, targeting “gig economy” returned a sample of 378 papers dealing with the topic. The subsequent analysis, employing the science mapping method and relating software (SciMAT), allowed to query the body of research dealing with gig economy in detail. The value added by this paper is fourfold. First, the broad literature on gig economy is mapped and the nascent synergies relating both to research opportunities and economic implications are identified and highlighted. Second, the findings reveal that while research on gig economy proliferates, the distinction between “platform” and “gig” economy frequently remains blurred in the analysis. This paper elaborates on this issue. Third, it is highlighted that the discussion on gig economy is largely dispersed and a clearer research agenda is needed to streamline the discussion to improve its exploratory and explanatory potential. This paper suggests ways of navigating this issue. Fourth, by mapping the existing research on gig economy and highlighting its caveats, the way toward a comprehensive research agenda in the field is highlighted.

In the extant body of literature on the servitization of the economy, on the one hand, and determinants of growth and development, on the other, the classic question of revealed comparative advantage (RCA) plays a prominent role. Regardless of the popularity, relevance, and validity of the use of the RCA as a part of multivariate queries on the above topics, this paper argues that the RCA alone offers a rather static insight into a country’s economic performance. Most importantly, the classic take on the RCA does not allow us to query a country’s comparative advantage and degree of specialization in the services sector. By inserting itself in the broader discussion on ways of bypassing the limitations inherent in the classic RCA index, this paper proposes a novel take on the RCA index, i.e., the Visvizi–Wosiek RCA (VWRCA) index, and, subsequently, applies it to the study of the evolution of the services sector in Poland over the period 2010–2019. The added value of the VWRCA index is threefold. (i) By recognizing the increasing role of services in the global economy, it serves as a useful tool in queries aimed at examining the structure of a given economy, the degree of specialization in the production of certain services, and the real revealed comparative advantage a country has in the production of a certain group/category of services. (ii) By focusing solely on services, the VWRCA index allows us to examine the volume and velocity of trade in services independently from the volume of trade in goods. (iii) Due to the resulting methodological accuracy, it enables the inclusion of a temporal dimension in the analysis, which in turn gives cues as to specific developments and the actual performance of a given economy regarding the evolution of the services sector.

Progressing digitalization of business, economy, and the society places higher education institutions (HEIs) in the center of the debate on how to effectively respond to challenges and opportunities that are thus triggered. Several facets of this process and corresponding challenges exist, including the complex question of how to match students’ skills and competencies with the demands and expectations of the industry. From a different angle, considering the changing nature of work, HEIs are responsible for equipping future employees with skills necessary to work in virtual, distributed, culturally diverse, and frequently global, teams. In the domain of software development, i.e., the backbone of the digital world, the challenge HEIs need to face is paramount. For this reason, the way software development is taught at HEIs is crucial for the industry, for the economy, for the students, and for the HEIs. As there is a tendency in the industry to embrace the scrum method and seek employees equipped with skills necessary for the scrum methodology use, it is necessary to ensure that HEIs offer the students the opportunity to get exposed to scrum. By querying the challenges of switching to agile software development methodologies in senior capstone projects, this paper makes a case that software development and software development methodology form the thrust of a multi-stakeholder ecosystem that defines today’s digital economy and society. In this context, the added value of this paper rests in the elaboration of a method enabling HEIs to move toward scrum in senior projects.

Eradication of poverty and social exclusion has been one of the main goals of the international community for several years now. With the implementation of specific policies, frequently directly aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), governments and international organizations adopted measures to assist vulnerable groups worldwide. As data suggests, while existing problems and challenges are far from being solved, new challenges arise. Against this backdrop, in this work, by focusing on specific issues and challenges, and by showcasing developments in the European Union (EU), we propose a model based on cryptocurrency technologies to suggest how certain of these challenges can be addressed. In this view, the findings of research presented here add to the discussion on how to attain SDG 10, i.e. “Reduce inequalities within and among countries”.

Since its inception, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) sparked considerable attention of research community, on the one hand, reviving memories of the ancient Silk Road and its implications for culture, society, and economy, and on the other hand, triggering concerns about investment patterns, debt issues, and environmental sustainability, to mention just a few. BRI is an evolving policy framework and it is only gradually that it can be examined at full length, with the necessary academic rigor and insight. A look at the existing literature on BRI reveals a burst of interest and corresponding publications on BRI over the past few years. It is too early to claim though that a clearly defined research agenda related to BRI has crystallized. In this research note, factors that may have contributed to that are identified and the frames of a possible future consolidated BRI research agenda are outlined.

Amid the strain related to the necessity of distance learning and related organizational adjustments in higher education institutions (HEIs), this paper re-examines the problem-focused coping strategy and its efficiency in addressing work-related strain. A case for the centrality of a problem-focused coping strategy in maintaining sustainability and resilience of HEIs is made. To this end, the spotlight is directed at workplace bullying in HEIs, which—due to its implications for absenteeism, turnover, and productivity—represents one of the most challenging issues in talent management in HEIs. What is termed here “hidden cost of workplace bullying” constitutes a direct challenge for HEIs sustainability and resilience. The discussion and the findings elaborated in this paper are based on a survey (n = 400) conducted across HEIs in Pakistan. It is argued that the findings are generalizable, which makes this paper an important addition to the literature on sustainability and resilience in HEIs.

In the latest years, the use of social media has increased dramatically. Content, as well as media, are shared in Big Data volumes and this poses a critical requirement for the behavior supervision and fraud protection. The detection of terrorist behavior in the social media is essential to every country, but has complexities in both the supervision of shared content and in the understanding of behavior. Therefore, in this project an artificial intelligence enabled Detection Terrorist behavior system (ALT-TERROS) as a key priority was developed. The key requirements for a terrorist behavior detection system operating in the Kingdom are: (i) Data integration, (ii) Advanced smart analysis capacity and (iii) Decision making capability. The unique value proposition is based on a sophisticated integrated approach to the management of distributed data available on social media, which uses advanced social mining methods for the detection of patterns of terrorist behavior, its visualization and use for decision making. In addition, several critical issues related to the availability of APIs to handle Arabic text as well as the need to provide an end-to-end workflow from the extraction of textual and visual data over social media to the deliverable of advanced analytics and visualizations for rating mechanisms were highlighted. The key contribution of our approach is a testbed for the application of novel scientific approaches and algorithms for the rating of harm associated to social media content. The complexity of the problem does not allow hyper-optimistic solutions, but the combination of heuristic rules and advanced decision-making capabilities is toward the right direction. We contribute to the body of the theory of Sentiment Analysis for Arabic content and we also summarize a heuristic algorithm developed for the future. In the future research directions, we emphasize on the need to develop trusted Arabic thesaurus and corpus for the use sentiment analysis.

This chapter explores the context of Poland's segue into a more sustainable energy policy model and maps the milestones of that process. It focuses on contingencies besetting the process and offers some cues into Poland’s current stance toward, e.g. the European Green Deal. The chapter discusses Poland’s energy usage by type and the evolution of Poland’s energy mix. It explores the development of the European Union energy policy framework. The strategic importance of the region was recognized also by communist authorities in post-war Poland. At that time Upper Silesia served as the key provider of energy resources for the rest of the country; nearly no consideration was given to the externalities this produced. The process of diversification of Poland’s energy-mix has several dimensions, including the environment dimension, the security dimension, and the socio-political dimension. New investments are required in order to increase the share of renewable energy sources, and thus increase energy efficiency and reduce pollutant emissions.

This chapter examines the story of Poland’s transition and transformation and highlights the key issues that tend to be underappreciated in the popular narrative on Poland and its path away from communism. It discusses the key definitional and conceptual issues pertaining to transition and transformation. The chapter outlines the key aspects of Polish transition and transformation, including institutionalization of external relations and liberalization. The unique feature of transition and transformation as they unfolded in Central Europe in the 1990s is that no one had ever done it before. Conditionality attached to financial assistance, specialization of assistance, and aid sequencing played an important role in consolidating Poland’s reform zeal. Conditionality attached to financial assistance encouraged the definition of a specific scope and implementation of specific reform items. The unemployment in Poland was structural, i.e. clearly linked to the overwhelming changes in the structure of the economy.

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book outlines recent developments on Polish political scene placed Poland in the spotlight, thus confirming the thesis of ‘unfinished transition’ and ‘reform backsliding’. It explains factors and mechanisms that led to the specific follow up of events in Poland and their outcomes over the timespan of 30 years, i.e. 1989–2019. The book addresses a variety of issues pertinent to Poland’s past 30 years of growth and development. It offers an interdisciplinary take on developments in Poland and a complex narrative on Poland’s segue to market economy. The book explores the positive influence of EU policies, including especially the cohesion policy and structural funds, on Poland’s growth and development. It also addresses several interconnected issues, such as determinants of successful transition and transformation and their sustainability.

An emerging technology with a secure and a decentralized nature, blockchain has the potential to transform conventional practices in an efficient and dynamic manner. However, migrating to blockchain can be challenging due to the complexity of its infrastructure and processes. The complexity of building applications on blockchain has been highlighted by many studies, thus stressing the need to investigate practical solutions further. A commonly known software engineering concept, software design pattern contributes to the acceleration of software development. It offers a holistic reusable solution for commonly occurring problems in a given context. It helps to identify problems that occur repetitively and describes best practices to address them. The present study is one of the first investigations to inquire into design patterns for blockchain application. Seeking to reduce the complexity in understanding and building applications on blockchain, this paper identifies a design pattern elicitation framework from similar blockchain applications. Next, it provides a demonstration of the Proof of Integrity (PoI) pattern elicited from two different applications on the blockchain. The applicability of the pattern is evaluated by building a blockchain application to verify the integrity of the academic certificates and by explaining how this integrity has been achieved empirically.

Social media, traditionally reserved for social exchanges on the Internet, has been increasingly used by researchers to gain insight into different facets of human life. Unemployment is an area that has gained attention by researchers in various fields. Medical practitioners especially in the area of mental health have traditionally monitored the effects of involuntary unemployment with great interest. The question we want to address is as follows: while many researchers have been using data from social media and microblogging sites in the past few years, do they provide results consistent with traditional research? Furthermore, if the data are indeed consistent, are they detailed enough to deduce possible reasons and remedies? We believe that having a concise answer to these questions is imperative for a sustainable mechanism for medical practitioners and researchers to gather and analyze data. The stigma of mental health prevents a good portion of society from seeking help, but the anonymity provided by the Internet could shatter such barriers, thus allowing people affected by conditions such as mental health and unemployment to express themselves freely. In this work, we compare the feedback gathered from social media using crowdsourcing techniques to results obtained prior to the advent of social media and microblogging. We find that the results are consistent in terms of (1) financial strain being the biggest stressor and concern, (2) the onslaught of depression being typical and (3) possible interventions, including reemployment and support from friends and family, playing a crucial role in minimizing the effects of involuntary unemployment. Lastly, we could not find enough evidence to study effects on physical health and somatization in this work.

In the context of the debate on the need to place citizens at the center of the technological revolution, this paper makes a case for a natural language processing (NLP) crowdsourcing platform that ensures inclusion and diversity, thus making the research outcome relevant and applicable across issues and domains. This paper also makes the case that by enabling participation for a wide variety of stakeholders, this NLP crowdsourcing platform might ultimately prove useful in the decision- and policy-making processes at city, community, and country levels. Against the backdrop of the debates on artificial intelligence (AI) and NLP research, and considering substantial differentiation specific to the Arab language, this paper introduces and evaluates an Arab language-sensitive NLP crowdsourcing platform. The value of the platform and its accuracy are measured via the System Usability Scale (SUS), where it scores 72.5, i.e., above the accepted usability average. These findings are crucial for NLP research and the research community in general. They are equally promising in view of the practical application of the research findings.

Social media gives researchers an invaluable opportunity to gain insight into different facets of human life.Researchers put a great emphasis on categorizing the socioeconomic status (SES) of individuals to help predict various findings of interest. Forum uses, hashtags and so on are common tools of conversations grouping. On the other hand, crowdsourcing is a concept that involves gathering intelligence to group online user community based on common interest. This paper provides a mechanism to look at writings on social media and group them based on their academic background. We build upon earlier work where we analyzed online forum posts from various geographical regions in the USA and Canada and characterized the readability scores of such users. Specifically, we collected 1000 tweets from the members of the US Senate and computed the Flesch-Kincaid readability score for the Senators. Comparing the Senators’ tweets to the ones from average citizens, we note the following. 1) US Senators’ readability based on their tweets rate is much higher affirming the gap between the academic performance of US Senators and their average citizen, and 2) the immense difference among average citizen’s score compared to those of US Senators is attributed to the wide spectrum of academic attainment.

Motivated by the #Metoo movement, we explore in this paper people’s perception of female bullying at workplace. We looked at #workplacebullying and found that 1) people were split between identifying the prevalence of workplace bullying against female and the view that such bullying simply does not exist and is a nuisance, 2) The tweets also showed the existence of psychological effects of cyberbullying, and 3) the tweets showed many intervention techniques that can minimize the effects of such bullying. We further explored the top three recurring hashtags mentioned under the #workplacebullying and found that the three top hashtags were #sexism, #feminism and #equality. Our results showed that the above hashtags represent the positive and negative approach to workplace bullying i.e. #feminism hashtag was mostly used by people who denied that workplace bullying against females exist while # sexism was mentioned as the prime cause by people who agree that such bullying exist. #equality overwhelmingly comprises of techniques to minimize workplace bullying against females.
