Nowadays, the competitiveness on industry, requires a good preparation from the organizations, considering all events that may occur, which brings new challenges for the corporation’s management. To address such challenges, risk management’s models have been used to give a sense of threat prevention, by assessing each project’s risk and the risk from the corporation itself as well. However, such models are normally based on human perception, which brings some subjectivity around the risks involved, making their definition less accurate. Additionally, there is a lack of models that allows to better define the corporation’s risk, by exploring the influence from the risk’s project. To address these issues, this paper presents an approach, supported by fuzzy logic, to analyze the risk’s level in an organization, by considering the influence of their projects. A case study will be used to assess the model robustness and to discuss the benefits and challenges found.

Nowadays—and due to an increasingly competitive world—organizations need to collaborate in an open innovation context to be efficient and effective by achieving high levels of innovation with their products and services. However, the existing resources—as well as the innovation achieved from the diversity of partners involved—brings challenges to the management; in particularly with risk management. To fulfill such needs, risk management frameworks have been created to support managers, on preventing threats with systems development, although without properly account the influence of each system component, on the entire system, as well as the subjectivity within human perception. To account for these issues, a framework supported by fuzzy logic is presented in this work, to evaluate the risk level on system development in open innovation environment. The approach robustness is assessed by using a case study, where the challenges and benefits found are discussed.

Nowadays, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), are becoming even more competitive, with the public ones, facing at the same time a greater restriction on public funding. Therefore, HEIs, have to be more effective and more efficient as well, on pursuing their own goals, which includes Research and Development (R&D) units as well. Such demands can be achieved, by enhancing R&D’s global performance. Therefore, the use of a framework such as European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM), can bring value to an organization with the characteristics of a R&D unit. This work presents a new integrated method based on EFQM model, by using Fuzzy Logic, to enhance the organizations’ overall performance. The applicability of the proposed approach is demonstrated by a case study in a R&D unit, where an initial performance evaluation takes place, by using RADAR’s Logic approach. The proposed method, based on Fuzzy Logic, is then applied, followed by the identification of the strength points as well as the improvement areas, according to the EFQM framework. Then, the improvement actions with high priority are determined, followed by the correspondent action measures. Keywords: Quality management, Fuzzy logic, EFQM

Currently, sustainability is considered a priority by society, with the household appliances being one of the economic sectors involved in achieving sustainability. However, the existence of several issues (e.g., energy and water consumption, reliability, initial cost, and illuminance, among others) together with the diversity of brands and models on the market, make the consumer’s decisions regarding sustainable options difficult, according to their concerns and related to each sustainability dimension (economic, environmental, and social). By combining evolutionary algorithms (EA) with multicriteria techniques, it is possible to achieve sustainable solutions for the consumer based on their requirements. In this paper, a method is presented to support the consumer by obtaining a set of sustainable household appliances on the market that suit their preferences, concerns, and needs. By using a case study to apply the approach developed here, a set of sustainable appliances from the market is obtained, where several benefits are achieved (e.g., energy and water consumption savings, avoidance of CO2 emissions) during the lifecycle of each appliance, chosen from the appliance’s industry.

The appearance of industry 4.0 and the internet of things allowed to shorten the gap between the consumer and the product industry, with the introduction of new digital processes. With this in mind, a project of an electro-pneumatic laboratory prototype to support the teaching of the industry 4.0 concepts was proposed. For the construction of the laboratory system was developed a typical industrial electro-pneumatic process (at scale), for which some support components were constructed using 3D modelling. For the automation part of the this system, the control platform of the programmable logic controller, type of programming language and creation of the code were developed. For the supervision system and remote digital control, the human machine interface is based in web pages using a common web browser, with the possibility of decentralized access in every tablet and smartphone. This prototype was simulated and tested, and it will help in the teaching of the 4.0 industry concepts.

Currently, companies to be competitive must achieve high rates of innovation and respond quickly to market needs. According to a number of managers and researches innovation is crucial for companies to stay “alive." Taking into account several reports, the development of co-innovation networks based on a collaborative environment is the best strategy to support innovation projects. However, the absence of mechanisms to detect and even anticipate potential risks of innovation based on a collaborative approach is an obstacle to the proliferation of this way of working. To address this issue, this paper discusses an approach based on fuzzy reasoning for analyzing the level of risk in co-innovation projects. It is discussed how this approach can be applied to co-innovation projects within the context of a collaborative ecosystem. At last, it is discussed the benefits, and challenges found on experimental results from a Portuguese co-innovation network.

Nowadays, companies to be competitive must develop capabilities that enable them to respond quickly to market needs. According to some managers, the strategy is the development of dynamic logistics networks based on a collaborative environment. However, the absence of mechanisms to detect and even anticipate potential opportunistic behaviour is an obstacle to the proliferation of this way of working. The article aims to understand the role of trust to sustainability of collaborative processes. The paper begins by discussing the trust properties. It is then discussed how statistical control charts can be used to support the trust monitoring of each member within a collaborative ecosystem. The control charts’ tools suggested in this paper are the Z control charts for trust level monitoring and the Zi capacity index. Finally, it is discussed how this approach can be applied to dynamic logistics networks within the context of a collaborative ecosystem.

Research centres to be excellent, increasingly need to develop or add skills to respond quickly to challenges of Research and Development (R&D) with increasing complexity. In this context, the route passes through the promotion of R & D networks where predominates sharing/transfer of knowledge and resources. In this way, the development of performance indicators focused on collaboration can help those in charge of managing research centres in decision-making processes and in defining best strategies. Applying concepts of social network theory, this article presents a model that allows to evaluate the performance of R&D centres and research networks according to various perspectives.

This paper introduces the problem of Mobile Robot Arm Covering (MRAC) along with a three-step procedure to solve it. In Mobile Robot Arm Covering one seeks the shortest path of a mobile robot equipped with a manipulator such that the manipulator workspace covers a given set of geometric entities. In this paper we consider the problem of covering a set of points. This is solved by a three-step procedure: the search space is first discretized into a finite set of robot poses; then the resulting combinatorial problem is solved by a memetic algorithm and, finally, the given solution is improved in the continuous space. Two popular discretization schemes developed for the related Close Enough Traveling Salesman Problem (CETSP) are evaluated in the MRAC context. Furthermore, a new memetic algorithm to solve MRAC and CETSP instances is developed. This algorithm overcomes the limitations of the approaches based on General Traveling Salesman Problem (GTSP) solvers, namely, the difficulty in handling large problems and the large computational times required to solve them.

Currently, due to the global competitiveness and the need for cost reduction, companies are more and more interested in increasing the availability of their production systems. Moreover, Internet is becoming indispensable for the distribution of information throughout the world, becoming critical to implement distance supervision systems which detect and diagnose faults. Thus, the concepts of Industrial Internet of Things and Industry 4.0 arise, where from a large amount of available information decisions can be quickly taken, preventing the occurrence of faults and failures. For this reason, the system proposed in this paper is an Internet based fault diagnosis system (FDSvI), it has applicability in a wide range of industrial processes and it has been applied and tested on a gantry robot. This system was developed using software like the graphical programming software LabVIEW ® using the Datalogging and Supervisory Control LabVIEW module and the OPC Servers for the communication between Siemens ® S7-1214C programmable controllers and the fault diagnosis system (FDS).

According to the traditional perspective the maintenance function is counted as a secondary activity consuming human and financial resources, which is why many companies, use as maintenance strategy for several years, the subcontracting of maintenance services to specialized companies. However, the need to perform maintenance operations on increasingly complex systems requires access to several distinct types of skills that small and medium-sized firms specialized in maintenance services generally do not have. This paper aims to illustrate the role of the Six Sigma Scorecard approach as a management tool for improving quality in service provided in a collaborative context. The article begins by discussing the principles of the Six Sigma and the Balanced Scorecard backgrounds. It is then discussed how the two methodologies can be combined as a management tool of maintenance activities. Finally, it is discussed how this approach can be applied in the assessment of maintenance activities in the context of a collaborative ecosystem.

The aim of this paper is concerned with a conceptual framework to get about the smart factory concept in the mould/tools industry, by retrieving knowledge from historical data and data analysis. Specifically, it will be addressed the requirements to design and develop the next generation of open decision making informatics systems as tools for high variability manufacturing systems as in the tooling industry. The proposed open computational platform as open informatics systems (I-systems) developed under the specifications of the conceptual framework mention above will combine new balancing and simulation algorithms that allow the optimization of the production systems suggesting new and credible collaborative production sequences in a forecasting manner. Coupling smart monitoring with real-time decision support I-systems, the proposed approach will be able to cope with the aim of reducing lead-times and costs on the shop floor. The proposed open system of systems approach aims at contributing to adaptive higher integration levels, contribute for a collaborative factory and, at the same time, reduce the vendor lock-in dependencies risks.

Due markets turmoil, the development of tools that allow risk analysis in organizations is increasingly critical in order to ensure the survival of organizations. Depending on the type of risk to be identified, it is necessary to use appropriate techniques that allow a diagnosis as concrete as possible, to timely detect risks and thus develop management policies that minimize their impact. In this paper is discussed how through the application of social network theory is possible to identify and quantify existing or potential hazards for example at the level of communication, management and sharing of knowledge among several actors of an organization in a collaborative context.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

A good management of renewable energy systems and energy storage requires Short Term Load Forecasting (STLF). In particular, Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) have proved their ability to cope with data driven nonlinear models. In this paper ANN models are used with input variables such as apartment area, numbers of occupants, electrical appliance consumption and time, in order to achieve a robust model to be used in forecasting energy consumption of general homes. A feed-forward ANN trained with the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm is tested and their results show a quite accurate model foreseeing that ANNs are a promising tool for STLF.

In this paper we propose a complete frontier-based exploration method for Pose SLAM. The goal of current frontier-based exploration methods is to eliminate all frontiers in the environment map. This approach, however, does not meet the requirements of Pose SLAM mapping: besides arriving at a frontier free map, there is the need to close the loops in the environment. In fact, loop closing is instrumental to Pose SLAM, since the major corrections to the map result from adding place revisiting constraints. The exploration method we propose is said to be complete in the sense that all loops are guaranteed to be closed. In this paper, we also describe a hybrid map that supports our exploration scheme and detail all the mechanisms required to maintain it during exploration. The validity of the approach is demonstrated on a widely used dataset.
