Modular building systems in the Slovak Republic are assessed as a practical construction method and solution for a particular type of housing stock, as well as an alternative. Most existing panel buildings designed in the Slovak Republic had sufficient static reserve, allowing for the construction of rooftop extensions. Despite the considerable advantages of modular rooftop extensions, the aforementioned method of increasing available and sustainable housing stock—especially in large cities—is under-utilized in Slovakia. This paper outlines a solution for low-energy extensions—the SOLTAG concept—on the basis of knowledge acquired by studying problems related to Soltag extensions as part of the SURE-Fit (Sustainable Roof Extension Retrofit) project and practical experience from Denmark. This paper aims to assess and compare energy savings and economic benefits for three rooftop extensions of the SOLTAG concept and bricked extensions for a model area in the Slovak Republic.

We might perceive the suburbanization as a form of urbanization processes when it comes to the migration of population and their activities from the town to its background. The term urban sprawl is understood as a violent development of suburban areas, which is prevailingly related to the origination of large residential regions in the surrounding of large cities. Urban sprawl has many negative consequences for residents and the environment, water and air pollution, increased traffic and jams, parking. A long-term problem of the Slovak Republic is taking up arable soil for property development, especially in the field of residential projects. The factors which contributed to agriculture land grabbing are primarily caused by new housing, industrial and commercial locations as well as in the transport infrastructure. The paper points to problems of the urban sprawl of towns (on the example of the biggest city district Bratislava - Petržalka), which induce several negative effects.

The long-term problem in Slovakia is the seizure of agricultural land for the purpose of implementation of development projects. Factors contributing to land grabbing and occupancy of land were and are mainly due to the need for new residential, industrial and commercial sites as well as transport infrastructure. The Slovak Republic is one of the transition countries, which since 1990 has transferred to a market economy. Subsequent positive legislative changes and the development of new economic instruments in Slovakia has increased interest of foreign companies in business development activities. The consequences of uncontrolled construction boom is reflected in seizure of quality agricultural land for the construction of development projects and the subsequent formation of negative externalities.

In industrialized countries in the Nineties a fundamental change occurred in a way how companies approach environmental protection. In practice are promoted new tools, associated with creation and protection of the environment, with a significantly preventive character. Awareness of corporate social responsibility for their actions and knowledge of the basic principles of the progressive management system for businesses is becoming a matter of prestige opportunity. One of the advanced business management tools for the protection of the environment is an environmental management system which contributes significantly to improving the environmental performance of the company. Article is devoted to environmental policy and the impact of the application of ISO 14001 according to Environmental Management System within the automotive company Volkswagen Slovakia.

Energy poverty is a term that is used for energy shortages in terms of providing electricity, heat, cold, etc. and it primarily means a limited or no access to these resources in the context of lack of necessary infrastructure, inability to connect to the transmission system, low income households etc. It is a problem that has a significant impact on the development and formation of young people. Quality of life is closely linked to housing and housing is determined by other factors, and energy poverty can be regarded as one of the most important factors. The aim of this paper is to name the energy poverty as an important determinant of the social dimension of housing quality, which may be a negative boundary element to the social exclusion of people.

Reducing the energy consumption is one of the pillars of sustainable development. In European scale is consumed nearly 40 % of power on operation of buildings because we spend 90 % of our time inside the buildings. Reducing energy consumption of buildings can be considered as the basis for innovative solutions for housing construction and rehabilitation of housing stock in the future which also generates significant user experience - ensuring a healthy indoor environment with an optimal design of the building. Paper presents an interesting solution of energy saving rooftop extensions - SOLTAG concept, which is the result of collaboration of experts from several countries including Slovakia.

The paper deals with economic benefits of clusters connected to competitiveness and regional development. Hard and soft benefits of clusters are described in relationship to innovation environment. The main focus is put on cluster policy influence on competitiveness of economy from the point of view of advantages of cluster creation for SME ́s. However, cluster policy contributes to the increase of competitiveness of small and medium enterprises.
