Dr. Susi Burgalassi graduated in Pharmacy in 1987 at the faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Pisa (Italy). She received her Ph.D. in “Design, development and bio-evaluation of drugs” in 1995 from the University of Pisa (Italy) with a thesis on "Mucoadhesive systems for controlled drug delivery for ophthalmic and buccal use”.
She was a Technician at the Department of Bioorganic Chemistry and Biopharmaceutics, Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Pisa (Italy) in 1999; she became Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutical Technology in 2004 and Associate Professor in 2014, also in the Department of Pharmacy of the University of Pisa.
The main research interests are in the technological and biopharmaceutical field: ophthalmic drug delivery; mucoadhesion of ocular, buccal and vaginal formulations; cytotoxicity studies of drugs and pharmaceutical adjuvants on corneal and buccal epithelial cell cultures; development of cell cultures as alternative methods to animal testing.
She worked initially as scientific collaborator of pharmaceutical companies, Inverni & Della Beffa (Milano, Italy); Glaxo (Verona, Italy); Farmigea (Pisa, Italy), and from 1997 to 1999 she was senior researcher of a European project (BMH4-97-2324) “Evaluation of oculotoxicity of drugs in vitro”.
She is a co-author of more than 70 papers in refereed international journals, patents, and communications at national and international meetings.
