One of the factors that will affect the livability of cities and the overall citizens’ quality of life in the future is certainly climate change. Urban areas will play a fundamental role in the commitment against climate change and will have to develop appropriate adaptation actions, in accordance with the European Strategy against climate change, including the planning and implementation of Green Infrastructures (GIs). They produce various environmental and social benefits in the urban context. Various studies have shown that citizenship involvement at all levels is necessary for the evaluation of the sharing of the proposed projects. The research proposes an innovative methodological model to support administrations in the strategic planning choice of GIs according to a shared and circular approach. To perform a multi-layer assessment, the multi-criteria evaluation will be combined with the circular evaluation model called Green City Circle. The evaluation is set up as a circular process, followed by a first investigative phase, followed by a proactive phase of solutions and an implementation phase up to a final stage of evaluation of the results and strategies for long-term sustainability. The study was carried out in the city of Catania to test a planning and management tool for GIs envisaged by the administration as win–win climate adaptation measures.

The concept of the conservative protection of ecosystems is increasingly supplanted by a global ecological vision, which considers a protected area as a place of contamination of knowledge and intervention techniques. The planning and management of the interventions are necessary to preserve the natural resources, traditional activities and representative living conditions of the place. Participatory planning supported by multi-criteria analysis represents an innovative methodology for making a contribution to the management and control of natural resources. The methodology proposed in this work is based on an integrated approach between participatory planning techniques and the NAIADE method. The structure of the method shows how it was possible to combine ease and speed of application with flexibility to the specificity of the different territorial realities, as required by the varied nature of territories included in the protected areas. The analysis of the case study aims to evaluate the theme of protection and enhancement of the Etna Park, to experiment new approaches and opportunities for the definition of management strategies for protected areas. The results obtained from this collaborative, eco-social-green governance model, developed through the integration of a participatory tool for the protection and enhancement of the territory of the Etna Park become strategic for the future choices.

Rural areas are recognized as multifunctional spaces, where traditional agro-silvo-pastoral and other human activities (unrelated rural tourism, ecotourism, processing industries of agricultural and or extractive products, land maintenance, trade in local products, etc.) take place alongside each other. The integrated endogenous development model, established to mitigate the effects of human activity in protected areas, relies on the enhancement of specific resources of individual territories through the active participation of the community to promote local development. This model is intrinsically connected with the model of sustainable development, based on three cornerstones: environmental, social, and economic sustainability. The difficulty in achieving a reasonable balance among these values relates primarily to areas subject to protection (i.e., Parks and Natural Reserves). Ultimately, the environmental culture emphasizes the sustainability of natural resources, obviously in relation to these values and to the vulnerability of these areas. This paper outlines some relationships between environmental protection and the exercise of agricultural activities and other human activities in protected areas by using the theory of “rough sets”. The study aims to show that in the complex context of Etna Park (recognized World Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2013), the model developed by the “rough sets” could provide useful guidance to policy makers to formulate local development strategies according to a model of the sustainable management of protected areas.

The population that lives in cities has surpassed the one that lives in the countryside. Cities are recognized as apriority source of pollution. The degradation of air quality and the phenomenon of Urban Heat Island (UHI) are some of the most well-known consequences of urban development. The adaptation of the cities is emerging as one of the greatest challenges that urban planners will face in this century. Urban Green Infrastructures (GIs) could help cities adapt to climate change, and the strategy of expansion of greening in urban planning could play an important role in enhancing the sustainability and resilience of cities and communities. Many studies have shown the benefits of GIs to climate change mitigation and adaptation in urban areas and their role as an important urban planning tool to satisfy environmental, social, and economic needs of urban areas. The objective of this article is to propose a methodological approach to evaluate the social perception of citizens regarding urban green areas. The proposed methodology, applied to the reality of the “urban green system” of Catania, is based on an integrated approach between participatory planning and the methods social multi criteria evaluation to guiding the city’s government to realize a new urban resilient development.

The natural environment in urban areas, often described as “urban green spaces”, is recognized by numerous researches and experiences as an important element because provide indirect and direct benefits to human health and well-being. Among the objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Goal 11, Sustainable Cities and Communities, is specifically dedicated to urban systems and its ambitious goal is “Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable”. The “urban green spaces” is a heritage of the complex city, which requires careful assessment that considers not only the economic variable, but also the social, environmental and institutional ones. The “urban green spaces” destined to agricultural activities, defined “urban gardens”, are able to offer answers to renewed food, environmental and socio-cultural needs. They can therefore be an important instrument for the integration between building renovation and natural and agricultural environments and could contribute to reducing the vulnerability of the urban system. Despite growing attention to “urban gardens” in the scientific literature, their inclusion in urban planning is not yet seen as a strategic element for a sustainable, resilient and inclusive social city model. The research aims to define the value of urban agriculture as an important instrument to regenerate abandoned or degraded urban areas, with a prevalent social and inclusive function. The proposed research is developed in the neighborhood of the city of Catania (Italy), called “Librino”. The research analyzes the relations among the beneficiaries of the “urban gardens” of Librino with the aim of assessing the social and inclusive function of the urban agricultural cor of the municipal initiative, applying the Social Network Analysis (SNA) methodology.

The e-Marketplaces have become the global platform for exchange, which have modified social and economic behavior. The digital revolution has opened the doors of the global village to industries, services, cities, and territories. Information and communications technology (ICT) can be a tool for the development of rural and agricultural areas, as demonstrated by real experiences reported in the literature. The advent of new technologies has also led to major changes in consumer buying processes and market relationships. The interest in shopping places is shifting from large shopping malls to “zero-km” shopping and e-commerce. The new e-commerce frontier is represented by logistics adaptations for zero-km sale of fresh produce and same-day delivery. The objectives of this study were to contribute to the knowledge of the phenomenon of e-marketplaces in the Italian agrifood economy and to analyze the new e-commerce models for fresh fruit and vegetables in Italy.

The new and more conscious sensibility towards the environmental sphere supports the idea of “green city”, promotes initiatives of structural integration of the green with the built environment and involves a considerable number of disciplines in a cultural and social debate. The literature reports different experiences of collaborative governance, between administrations and citizens, which tend to enhance the interaction between the different social actors involved in the investments of Green Infrastructures, to share objectives and management methods and to assess the extent of ecosystem services. The objective of this article is to propose a methodological approach to assessing green investments in the urban area, which is able to internalize the social perception of citizens regarding this important component for the urban landscape, with a view to guiding the city’s government towards a new urban eco-social-green planning and evaluation model. It presents a concise framework of the scientific debate on climate change and on the effects of urban planning issues; some relevant experiences of Green Infrastructures; and the proposed methodology, applied to the reality of the “urban green system” of Catania, based on an integrated approach between participatory planning and the method NAIADE (Novel Approach to Imprecise Assessment and Decision Environments).

Starting out from the admonitions of the encyclical letter by pope Francis, this contribution aims to define the value of social agriculture as an instrument of integrated development of the territory able to foster, just for its own peculiarities, the creation of dense systems of relationships among the various stakeholders that operate in synergy for the local development of the territory and the creation, therefore, of shared capital. The analysis, through the first results of a case study involving various social agricultural enterprises that operate in the metropolitan area of Catania, has enables the quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the relationships that are generated between the various subjects that interact at the territorial level (network), using the methodology of Social Network Analysis (SNA).

This study was intended to frame current changes of city and citizens in the new virtual contexts. This research analyzed different citizens need attitudes whether it occurs in a traditional or virtual context. Here we presented the first results, which may well explain the new strategies and modalities of city to join the new green urban planning and meet the new citizens’ demand, by means of different tools and media. More specifically, the research carried out on the social media application for quality of metropolitan life. Information obtained has helped leading municipality towards a correct planning strategy in the different environments, traditional and virtual, also considering the impact of social media. In particular, the word-of-mouth mechanism among citizen seems to have gained a more and more relevant role in the information process of the virtual community, representing a strong generator of messages and experiences in the virtual and traditional environments.

There are many scientific contributions from different disciplines, including philosophy and psychology, which have dealt with aspects of buying behavior related to typical products. These products convey messages relating to the area of origin (in terms of culture and environment) and food security (including nutritional aspects). Recently, scientific contributions based on “neurological” investigative techniques have been developed on consumer behaviors. They have a relevant interest in the scientific community because they can be a valid instrument to understand the cognitive and emotional processes on “the preferences expressed”. This is a new theoretical approach known as “neuromarketing”. This chapter aims to analyze the cognitive and emotional choices of the consumers regards typical products of Italy. The results could be used to support specific campaigns to enhance the typical product by using a targeted communication which highlights the emotional components of the buying process.

In the last decade, citrus fruits farming, at the international level, revealed an upward trend changing the traditional scenarios of the offer, with the exchange of products coming from all areas of the world, thanks to the progressive abrogation of fare barriers. The material exchange is causing spreading of diseases that have caused a severe damage, such as the epidemics and culture extinctions with a high economic, health, environmental and social impact. In such a context, the definition of possible methods to face the emergencies is absolutely necessary. This research suggests the adoption of an evaluation model for phytosanitary emergencies (Citrus Tristeza Virus – CTV), a model that is sustainable from the economic, social, biotic and phytosanitary perspective. It is based on an integrated model that considers the application of a participatory planning technique and of an evaluation method included among the tools of the Social Multi-Criteria Evaluation (SMCE). The results highlighted that the hypothesis 1 “cohabitation with the Citrus Tristeza virus” is the predominant hypothesis, followed at short distance by the hypothesis 2 ”total eradication and re-implantation”, while the hypothesis 3 “abandonment or extirpation” gained a marginal meaning. It was possible to assert that the hypothesis 1 was the one that presented the highest sustainability.

In the ICTs sector, innovations follow each other swiftly, as it is a very dynamic market, where Web 3.0 represents the latest phenomenon, after Web 2.0 and the social networks that had revolutionised the global world of information. The web has become a web ecosystem in which users create value by sharing and creating experiences in the web. However, despite the fact that there are interesting potentials for growth, Italian agri-food and agricultural enterprises have still not bridged the digital divide. The aim of this study is to provide a brief overview of the developments in the digital economy and of the changes in B2C models. In particular, the state of the art for agri-food products in relation to the evolution from e-commerce to social commerce will be analysed, through a specific survey, consisting of two complementary phases, related both to online businesses and to the web consumers.

The SMART management of the UNESCO heritage is enriched, in recent years, new tools of ICTs, some of them in implementation of European and national legislative guidelines. The use of intelligent systems, such as you can remember the Quick Read (QR Code) or mobile apps, allows to support new scenarios enhancement and use of the territory. In Italy, the Italian Association Heritage UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the support of the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Tourism (Law 77/2006), has promoted the use of QR Code for the use of the heritage UNESCO. In addition, recently it proposed in laboratory tests apps iMiBAC, mobile cultural aimed for the use of some archaeological sites and museums. The study proposes an extension for use of QR Code and iMiBAC Apps to communication, promotion and integrated use of land resources of the UNESCO site 'The late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto'.

The achievement of Information Communication Technology (ICT) as a new ground for economic competition is deeply affecting the trade organization in many merchant sectors. For Italian agri-food products it is of absolute importance for Internet marketing to be undertaken and to foresee the consequent scenarios. The aim of this research is to exactly assess the opportunities and problems of the distribution circuit based on the virtual scenario, with a methodological and empirical approach, working on the analysis of experiences already begun by agri-food companies established in Italy and engaged in “business to consumer” and “business to business”. The ICT is configured as a phenomenon in a continuous and rapid evolution, which makes it necessary for companies to continually adapt to it and to the habits of web-consumers. This means that it is necessary to effectively enter the network of agri-food firms, and to strategically revise marketing methods focusing on the market place.

The aim of this study is that of providing some indications about the involvement of social networks into the agrifood system, even if in Italy it has just been approached compared to other countries, a reason why we do not have relevant statistics and enough literature. Social media, in fact, may contribute to formulate the right communication strategies in the different contexts, both traditional and virtual, by understanding at first what impact social media have through “word of mouth” among consumers concerning purchase trend of other ones, including the “experience sharing” in both contexts that may affect final purchase differently
