This paper is focused on research addressing a large quantity of data extracted from online reviews written by tourists visiting islands. These were extracted from TripAdvisor regarding island tourist destinations since there is a gap in the scientific literature using this approach on island tourism. The Islands of the Sun, Boa Vista and Sal, of Cape Verde, a Small Island Developing State (SIDS), were the targets of this investigation. After applying text mining to a large dataset, results are discussed, including from the perspectives of hotels, restaurants, and tourist attractions. For example, the beach is the main tourist attraction in both islands, but whereas in Boa Vista, tours on quad bikes constitute a major tourist activity, its equivalent in Sal is actually diving. The location of hotels near the beach is a big plus for tourists who also emphasize their human interaction with staff members in both hotels and restaurants.

Blockchain (BC) technology is gaining momentum in a variety of application domains, beyond finance. We present a text mining literature analysis of a body of published articles queried in the Scopus database, regarding BC technology and consumer trust. We applied a semiautomated text mining and topic modelling approach: we mix top-down and bottom-up procedures to align the existing literature on BC taxonomies with the gathered articles' list of keywords; we then feed automatically the latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) algorithm to uncover relevant topics enabling to analyse the existing body of knowledge. Our analysis highlights the multidisciplinary nature of BC research within consumer trust. Among others, findings show pertinent aspects to consumer trust, such as traceability and privacy, are receiving only marginal attention from scholars. Our analysis also reveals the marketing, social and economic sciences’ researchers should devote efforts to the application of BC and its impact to consumer trust. We provide future research trends we deem crucial to be addressed regarding sustainable blockchain trustability.

Restaurant management requires customer responsiveness to deal with increasingly higher expectations and market competitiveness. This study proposes an approach to simplify the decision-making process of restaurant managers by combining both live social media customer feedback and historical sales data in a sales forecast model (based on TripAdvisor data and the Bass model). Our approach was validated with internal and external (i.e., online reviews) data gathered from six restaurants. The collected data was processed using data analytics for developing a dashboard that provides value for restauranteurs by taking advantage of online reviews and sales forecast. Such dashboard was evaluated by restaurant management experts, which provided positive feedback, highlighting in particular the time saved in the decision-making process.

Microworlds are simulations in computational environments where the student can manipulate objects and learn from those manipulations. Since their creation, they have been used in a wide range of academic areas to improve students learning from elementary school to college. However, their effectiveness is unclear since many studies do not measure the acquired knowledge after the use of microworlds but instead they focus on self-evaluation. Furthermore, it has not been clear whether its effect on learning is related to the teaching method. In this study, we perform a meta-analysis to ascertain the impact of microworlds combined with different teaching methods on students’ knowledge acquisition. We applied a selection criterion to a collection of 668 studies and were left with 10 microworld applications relevant to our learning context. These studies were then assessed through a meta-analysis using effect size with Cohen’s d and p-value. Our analysis shows that the cognitive methods combined with microworlds have a great impact on the knowledge acquisition (d = 1.03; p < 0.001) but failed to show a significant effect (d = 0.21) for expository methods.

This study presents a data mining approach to predict academic success of the first-year students. A dataset of 10 academic years for first-year bachelor’s degrees from a Portuguese Higher Institution (N = 9652) has been analysed. Features’ selection resulted in a characterising set of 68 features, encompassing socio-demographic, social origin, previous education, special statutes and educational path dimensions. We proposed and tested three distinct course stage data models based on entrance date, end of the first and second curricular semesters. A support vector machines (SVM) model achieved the best overall performance and was selected to conduct a data-based sensitivity analysis. The previous evaluation performance, study gaps and age-related features play a major role in explaining failures at entrance stage. For subsequent stages, current evaluation performance features unveil their predictive power. Suggested guidelines include to provide study support groups to risk profiles and to create monitoring frameworks. From a practical standpoint, a data-driven decision-making framework based on these models can be used to promote academic success.

This study focuses on perhaps the most iconic media format of all time, the vinyl record. By adopting a data mining approach, the goal is to understand which factors involved in the buying and selling of vinyl, influenced its price, with the initial hypothesis considering record labels and popular rankings to be some of the most contributing variables. To be able to evaluate it, four datasets were created in an endeavor to represent recent and past records of two different genres, Rock and Jazz, by extracting data from Discogs’ marketplace and Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. Such approach unveiled that an artist’s presence in the charts and their labels belonging to one of the ‘Big three’ do not always dictate their records at highest prices. The results also showed that features which measure popularity become more relevant in the ‘era’ where the record’s genre is more popular and that big record labels have been losing market share to an increasing number of independent labels.

Airport hotel chains target the specific and important segment of accommodation near airports, thus benefiting from travelers seeking to stay near an airport. This study addresses service quality by analyzing TripAdvisor online reviews over units from both a high-end and a low-end chain in five European cities (Amsterdam, Brussels, Frankfurt, London, Paris). Using text mining and topic modeling, ten heat matrices were drawn (one per unit) to summarize the main services characterizing the computed topics. Seven hypotheses grounded on existing literature were tested, from which some interesting findings emerged (e.g., related to transfer services, staff, food and beverage, cleanliness, and punctuality). This study contributes to the standardization versus adaptation debate by unveiling a globalized strategy in staff management and breakfast services, while bar services adopt a localized strategy. Transportation services, while not offered by the hotels, are frequently mentioned, which signals hoteliers to interact with local authorities to improve accessibilities.

We assess how cultural differences between guests and host destination affect the TripAdvisor score granted on hotel units. We selected two gambling destinations, Las Vegas and Macau, to enable a comparison between a Western and an Eastern destination. The six Hofstede’s cultural dimensions (power distance, individualism, masculinity, uncertainty avoidance, long term orientation, indulgence) were adopted. A total of 109,309 and 28,957 useful reviews for Las Vegas and Macau, respectively, were collected from TripAdvisor. Then, for each online reviewer, the difference between the reviewer’s country of origin and the destination for each dimension were computed. Finally, two data mining models (one per destination) of TripAdvisor score were computed using as inputs the differences for each dimension. We conclude that the difference between guest origin and destination cultural dimension influences the scores granted on TripAdvisor. We also found that the relevance of each dimension is different for both destinations analysed.

Many university programs include Microsoft Excel courses given their value as a scientific and technical tool. However, evaluating what is effectively learned by students is a challenging task. Considering multiple-choice written exams are a standard evaluation format, this study aimed to uncover the features influencing students’ success in answering these types of questions. The empirical experiments were based on Excel evaluation exams containing questions answered by 526 students between 2012 and 2016, with a total of 3,340 answers characterized by 17 features. Through data mining, a neural network was developed that accurately modeled students’ choices. A sensitivity analysis was applied to the model to assess the most relevant features. Findings identified four highly relevant features for students’ success: number of words of the question, topic, difficulty degree, and number of similar choices. This study helps to guide the design of future exams by quantifying the individual influence of each feature.

Purpose Strategic goal achievement in every sector of a company relies fundamentally on the firm's employees. This study aims to disclose the factors that spur employees of major Information Technology (IT) companies in the United States (US). Design/methodology/approach In this paper, 15,000 reviews from the top 15 United States IT companies were collected from the social media platform Glassdoor to uncover the factors that satisfy IT employees. To learn the most meaningful features that influence the scores, positive and negative remarks, as well as advice to the management team, were analyzed through a support vector machine. Findings Results highlight a positive attitude of coworkers, contributing to a positive environment and job satisfaction. However, unsatisfied IT employees reveal that work exhaustion is the main reason for their job dissatisfaction. Practical implications IT human resource departments can use these valuable insights to align their strategies in accordance with their employees' desires and expectations in order to thrive. Originality/value The study highlights the relevance of IT companies to understand the reasons behind their employees' satisfaction. Up until now, little is known concerning the variants of job satisfaction among IT employees, enriching the understanding in this particular professional area.

Health information systems have been developed to help hospital managers steer daily operations, including key performance indicators (KPIs) for monitoring on a time-aggregated basis. Yet, current literature lacks in proposals of productivity dashboards to assist hospitals stakeholders. This research focuses on two related problems: (1) hospital organizations need access to productivity information to improve access to services; and (2) managers need productivity information to optimize resource allocation. This research consists in the development of dashboards to monitor information obtained from a hospital organization to support decision makers. To develop and evaluate the productivity dashboard, the Design Science Research (DSR) methodology was adopted. The dashboard was evaluated by stakeholders of a large Portuguese hospital who contributed to iteratively improving its design toward a useful decision support tool. Additionally, it was ascertained that monitoring productivity needs more study and that the dashboards on these themes are valuable assets at a monitoring level and subsequent decision-making process.

Tourism has been recognized as an essential industry to Islands’ development and growth. Islands’ diversity and uniqueness had posed various challenges and brought them to light in terms of relevance in the industry. However, most of the research in tourism has been more focused on mainland destinations, although there are several researchers studying islands as well. This paper focused on analyzing tourism and hospitality journals indexed in Scopus and belonging to the first and second quartiles within a period of 18 years (from 2000 to 2017). A concept map based on the selected articles was elaborated including the analysis of 13 associated themes, constituting one of the first literature review to map the research that has been conducted within the realm of tourism in islands.

Purpose Airbnb Experiences is a new type of service launched by Airbnb in November 2016, where users can offer travellers a wide range of activities. This study devotes attention to analysing customer feedback expressed in online reviews published in Airbnb to evaluate those experiences. Design/methodology/approach A total of 1,110 reviews were collected from 12 categories, including 111 experiences, resulting in 10 reviews per experience. First, the sentiment score was computed based on the text of the reviews. Second, 17 quantitative features encompassing user, Airbnb experience and review information were used to model the score through a support vector machine. Third, a sensitivity analysis was performed to extract knowledge on the most relevant features influencing the sentiment score. Findings Tourists writing online reviews are not only influenced by their tourist experience but also by their own online experience with the booking and online review platform. The number of reviews made by the user accounted for more than 20 per cent of relevance, while users with more reviews tended to grant more positive reviews. Originality/value Current literature is enhanced with a conceptual model grounded on existing studies that assess tourist satisfaction with tour services. Both services online visibility and user characteristics have shown significant importance to tourist satisfaction, adding to the existing body of knowledge.

The computerization of relevant information in organizations is increasingly becoming a necessary reality in companies that want to be present in a market that is characterized by innovation, adaptability and where bigger amounts of information are increasingly available and accessible to everyone, the use of Social Collaboration tools in organizations become increasingly crucial to keep a business running (Brocke J, Maaß W, Buxmann P, et al. (2018) Future work and enterprise systems. Business & Information Systems Engineering 60(4): 357–366). In Alter(2013) Work system theory: overview of core concepts, extensions and challenges for the future. Journal of the Association for Information Systems 14(2): 72–121), work systems are described as systems ‘in which human participants and machines perform work (processes and activities) using information, technology and other resources to produce specific products/services for specific internal and external customers’. The computerization of processes is not, however, so complete because all the formal and informal relationships among employees, which underlie each organization and have a high impact on the correct definition of processes, are not correctly considered. In order to mitigate this problem, this article presents a proposal for representing, in computer systems, formal and informal relations between employees and the consequent integration in organizational processes in order to provide automatic diagnosis of highlighted processes.

Purpose Overall, there is a lack of research using online reviews as a proxy of customer experience when addressing the study of tourism in island destinations. Design/methodology/approach The current investigation aims to fill this gap by focussing on an African small island developing states, i.e. Cape Verde. This paper reports of tourist reviews extracted from TripAdvisor from “two islands of the senses” as coined by this archipelago’s national tourism organization, specifically Santo Antão and Fogo islands. The data analysis was performed through Leximancer software to generate concepts out of words, followed by themes. Findings The present research focussed on experiences in island tourism to identify their main dimensions based on visitors’ narratives in online reviews. The obtained results are of potential value to the literature by contributing to a better understanding of tourist experience in the context of tourism in islands in an understudied country, Cape Verde. Originality/value Results are presented and object of discussion vis-à-vis scientific literature and conclusions put forward in this journal paper.

Purpose National tourism offices worldwide implement marketing strategies to influence tourists’ choices. However, there is more than meets the eye when it comes to choosing a city as a tourism destination. The purpose of this paper is to answer which are the characteristics that play a key role in room occupancy. Design/methodology/approach Diverse characteristics such as the city offer, demographics, natural amenities (e.g. number of beaches) and also politics (e.g. type of government) are combined into a decision tree model to unveil the relevance of each in determining room occupancy. The empirical experiments used data known in 2015 from 43 cities from Europe and the rest of the World to model room occupancy rate in 2016. Findings While the seasonality effect plays the most significant role, other less studied features such as the type of political party prior to current government were found to have an impact in room occupancy. Originality/value This study unveiled that center–right and right governments are generally more sensitive to promote its city as a tourism destination.

Purpose Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are two technological breakthroughs that stimulate reality perception. Both have been applied in tourism contexts to improve tourists’ experience. This paper aims to frame both AR and VR developments during the past 15 years from a scientific perspective. Design/methodology/approach This study adopts a text mining and topic modelling approach to analyse a total of 1,049 articles for VR and 406 for AR. The papers were selected from Scopus, with the title, abstract and keywords being extracted for the analysis. Formulated research hypotheses based on relevant publications are then evaluated to assess the current state of the broader scope of the large sets of literature. Findings Most of research using AR is based on mobile technology. Yet, wearable devices still show few publications, a gap that is expected to close in the near future. There is a lack of research adopting Big Data/machine learning approaches based on secondary data. Originality/value As both AR and VR technologies are becoming more mature, more applications to tourism emerge. Scholars need to keep pace and fill in the research gaps on both domains to move research forward.
