Genuario Belmonte was born in Taranto on 14-09-1958 and earned a level II degree in biological sciences from the University of Ferrara in 1981 and in natural sciences in 1982. The author became an assistant professor at the University of Lecce in 1985, an associate professor in 1998, and a first professor of zoology at the University of Salento in 2005. Belmonte was awarded a PhD honoris causa in 2017.
