Organisations are a fundamental part of challenges and solutions to climate change issues. Therefore, the micro and macro factors influencing employee ecological behaviour (EEB) are a rising interest among researchers. The contemporary concept of EEB has been embraced by many organisations and attracted scholars’ attention worldwide. Nevertheless, studies that explored challenges and solutions for performing EEB at the workplace are scarce. This study explored challenges and solutions in performing EEB at the workplace and focused on qualitative research methodology. The researchers interviewed 24 academicians from five leading green research Malaysian universities. Valuable qualitative data and numerous challenges such as high costs of practising, lack of infrastructure, top management support, environmental attitude, green mindfulness, enforcement, and monitoring were identified as challenges in applying EEB from the interviews. Stringent rules and regulations, monitoring, training programmes, and monetary incentives might be efficient solutions to apply ecological behaviour at workplaces, specifically universities. In conclusion, this study has discovered the challenges and solutions in implementing EEB for a sustainable workplace by interviewing academicians from different departments of selected Malaysian higher educational institutes. Also, poor infrastructure, high cost, and the lack of top management support, environmental attitude, green mindfulness, enforcement, and monitoring were identified as the primary challenges in performing EEB. Additionally, the research also discovered significant suggestions to resolve the challenges when implementing EEB at the workplace, such as strict rules and regulations, training programmes, incentives, monitoring, and communicating change and campaigns. Therefore, the stakeholders related to the industry should be concerned with the challenges identified when applying EEB at the workplace to apply the solutions generated from the study.

Nowadays, the issue of teachers’ psychological well-being causes serious concern, especially in Malaysia. Many studies related to psychological well-being have focused on students rather than on the health and well-being of teachers. Thus, the current study investigated the determinants of psychological well-being (depression, anxiety and stress) from the psychosocial work environment (job control, job demands and social support), and examined the moderating role of job control and social support in the relationship between job demands and psychological well-being among teachers. The design of this study was quantitative research through a survey questionnaire. The sample consisted of 335 high school teachers (23.3%—male; 76.7%—female) who responded to measuring scales of job demands, job control, social support, depression, anxiety and stress, and socio-demographic profile. The data were analyzed using two statistical methods, namely descriptive and inferential statistics. The hierarchical linear regression model was used to analyze the data by assisting the statistical software, i.e., SPSS-23. The results showed that job demands, job control and social support significantly predicted teachers’ psychological well-being. Furthermore, the effect of job demands on teachers’ depression and anxiety was partially moderated by job control and social support. In conclusion, this study has successfully identified the significant predictors of teachers’ psychological well-being and the role of job control and social support as a moderating variable to teachers’ psychological well-being in Malaysia. The result provides insights and contributes to the literature of teachers’ psychological well-being determinants and involves Malaysian respondents with a collectivistic eastern culture.

The credit distribution is a vital banking intermediation functions in which banks serve as intermediaries for debtors and creditors. Credit distribution to customers is dependent upon internal and external factors. This research is conducted to examine the influence of internal and external factors on credit distribution at Indonesian’s rural credit banks in particular rural credit banks in Java and Sumatra. The data used in this study are a financial report of rural credit banks in Java and Sumatera from the period 0f 2014-2016 accessed from Bank Indonesia’s website. Inflation data obtained from the Central Bureau of Statistics. This study applies a panel regression model with the common effect model as the best model. The results of the study show that inflation is the single external factor that influences the distribution of assets in BPR, while interest rates (Bank Indonesia’s certificates) do not affect credit distribution. Meanwhile, internal factors which include Operational Costs to Operating Income, third-party funds, Capital Adequacy Ratio, concurrently affect credit distribution in rural credit banks in Indonesia, especially Java and Sumatra.

Today, the spread of the Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic continues to impact on world public health and bring about considerable human suffering partly due to government policies on reducing the spread. COVID-19 has significantly affected human health and it has impacted on the occupation of vulnerable groups such as tour guides, drivers and shop assistants. Of these, the present study aims to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 self-isolation policy on the occupation of vulnerable groups in Semarang City, Indonesia. To achieve this objective, this study uses a qualitative method with an ethnography approach considering a rational or non-rational thinking model. The binary opposition thinking pattern pioneered by Lévi-Strauss was used in the interview process with 25 informants in Semarang City, Indonesia. The data analyzed the response pattern of informants through the taxonomy analysis. Three levels of vulnerability among groups relating to occupation were identified; jobs lost, income decreased, and delayed salary. The result of the analysis found that the group who obeyed self-isolation was categorized as a rational thinking; these groups stay at home, do not go to work, and have no income. Besides that, the group who ignored self-isolation is categorized as non-rational thinking; they work, as usual, get their salary, and believe that the COVID-19 pandemic is a disaster and they pray for their safety to God. In conclusion, COVID-19 brings a significant impact on occupation in the forms of postponing, declining, and missing income besides the health effects among vulnerable groups in Semarang city, Indonesia. In avoiding COVID-19 infection, the circumstances of vulnerable groups are worse when self-isolation is required. Thus, this study suggests that the government needs to assist vulnerable groups by focusing on strategic policies, such as strategies for survival, providing access to basic needs, including health, and offering livelihood plans by providing access to medical services and other source of income.

In this study, we use restlessness as an input for a rice crisis indicator, since restlessness rather than rice price provides a comparable year-to year context. We outline the significant increase in the use of unprecedented restlessness (UR) as an indicator for rice crises. The UR approach involves a precedence analysis, in contrast with the existing approach, the price shock analysis. We test UR as a new indicator for rice crises at the national level, which can be applied in Asia and other countries around the world where rice is the staple food. Strong indicators point out the effectiveness of strategic government programs and are able to assess solutions and detect rice crises, while weak indicators are only reliable in detecting whether or not there has been a crisis. UR is tested across 43 countries using two new statistics: success probability (SP) and constraint probability (CP). As a consequence of SP and CP calculations, a large number of IMR control charts for UR analysis are constructed to provide evidence that UR is a strong indicator. The optimum validity measurement result is achieved with SP = 8/26 = 0.31 and CP = 8/14 = 0.57. This means that the UR detects and is followed by only 31% of riot events. Since the value of SP is less than 0.6, we can conclude that the UR indicator is not considered valid as an indicator of rice crises at the national level. The values of CP and SP are determined subjectively as equal to 0.6. This is the main cause of the emergence of new problems in the calibration of UR as an indicator of rice crises. The subjective success criteria trigger a question regarding why the value is 0.6, for which there is no scientific justification. Based on this background, we continue to objectively establish success criteria for UR validity. After conducting a risk analysis involving a crisis recovery cost (CRC) to crisis anticipation cost (CAC) ratio, it is found that the probability of the CRC-to-CAC ratio having values greater than 7 is 0.76, which means the CRC-to-CAC ratio tends to be higher than 7. Objectively, it is concluded that UR, which has been defined as rice crisis indicator at the national level, is an important indicator.

The global increase of urban solid waste in developing countries is creating highly significant challenges. There is a lack of research on sustainable waste management behavior (SWMB) among university academic staff. Hence, this study aims to examine the effect of attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavior control on SWMB. This study employed the theory of planned behavior (TPB) as the underlying theory. This study’s sample consisted of 252 academic staff from the top three sustainable universities in Malaysia listed by the UiGreenMetric in 2018. The academic staff were surveyed by using an online and self-administered survey and analyzed by using PLS-SEMThe results showed that attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control positively affect SWMB. This study makes significant contributions to both theory and practice. The study fills in the literature gap and supports the TPB theory. This study provides empirical evidence on the effect of main TPB variables, such as attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavior control on SWMB through a quantitative research approach, exploring all three of the 3Rs to study academic staff’s waste management behavior on campus. From the managerial perspective, this study’s results provide empirical evidence on factors that affect SWMB among academic staff. This information is crucial to managers and policymakers to plan strategies to engage academic staff with SWMB. Managers and policymakers should focus on conducting more campaigns on sustainable waste management for academic staff. The campaigns would enhance academic staff’s attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control towards practicing SWMB for a more sustainable campus in the future.

This study aimed to examine the role of environmental commitment, environmental consciousness, green lifestyle, and green self-efficacy in influencing pro-environmental behaviour. Data were obtained through a survey of 72 students at one of the training centers in Malaysia. The hypothesized relationships were tested using partial least squares (PLS) methodology. Results showed that environmental commitment, environmental consciousness, green lifestyle, and green self-efficacy positively influenced pro-environmental behaviour, thereby providing new insights to existing literature on environmental sustainability. The results may be used by educational institutions, the government, and private agencies to strengthen students’ knowledge, attitude, and behaviour that support environment-based education. The scope of the study was limited to students at a training center, so the results may not be generalizable to different settings. Another limitation was that the study used limited contextual elements. The novelty of this study is that it examined the role of environmental commitment, environmental consciousness, green lifestyle, and green self-efficacy as determinants of pro-environmental behaviour among students in an educational setting in Malaysia.

The energy consumption is projected to improve living standards and the economy of society. However, for achieving this objective, the government should spend much money in kind of subsidies especially in fuel oil. In several previous studies, they stated that the Indonesia government was experiencing a budget deficit due to their policy about fuel oil subsidy policy. Thus, the purpose of this study is to examine the efficiency of government spending regarding fuel oil subsidy policy in Indonesia. This study designed by using quantitative analysis collected from three data sources, namely Bank Indonesia, Central Bureau of Statistics, and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. The quarterly data for 21 years which consists of 1996 to 2017 analysed using the stochastic frontier model by assisting statistical software, namely Eviews 10. In this study, we examine the relationship government expenditure via fuel subsidy policy (FUELsubs) on economics growth (GDPpc). Also, the relationship between unemployment (UNEMPLY) and inflation rates (INFL). Besides, for analysing the efficiency of government expenditure on energy consumption (FUEL) subsidy policy in Indonesia, we use the estimation values of the stochastic frontier model through error components, vi and ui. The results of this study found the fuel subsidy policy does not meet the energy subsidy target for the Indonesian economy. Then, there is inefficiency in subsidies that impacts the tradeoff between unemployment and inflation. The GRDP is an important indicator to measure the economic growth of a region so that the GRDP forecast future needs. This paper intends to choose a better method for forecasting the GRDP of Bandung Regency. The method used in this study is the Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) time series model and the Backpropagation of Levenberg-Marquardt or Feed Forward Neural Network (FFNN) method. To measure the accuracy of forecasting carried out using Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE). The GRDP data obtained from the Bandung Regency Central Bureau of Statistics, in the years 2010-2016. The results of the analysis using the ARIMA model, obtained ARIMA (0, 1, 1) model, with MAPE of 3.90%. Meanwhile, analysis using Backpropagation of Levenberg-Marquardt obtained FFNN (1, 5, 1) model, with MAPE of 3.88%. Because the MAPE value in the FFNN (1, 5, 1) model is smaller than the MAPE value in the ARIMA (0, 1, 1) model, it can conclude that the Backpropagation of Levenberg-Marquardt method better used in forecasting the GRDP of Bandung Regency.

Child labor is a pervasive issue around the world, especially in developing countries. It is a wide phenomenon issue in which many countries have a similar problem related to child labor. The purpose of this study is to examine the factors determining child labor in Aceh Province. The data used is the primary data of the National Social Economic Survey (SUSENAS) 2016 conducted by the Central Bureau of Statistics. The dependent variable is children aged 10-17 years, while the independent variables are the educational level, the role of child as the head of the household, gender, residence area, single parent status, and age. The logistic regression model is used to describe the relationship between the independent variable (child labor and not child labor) with a number of explanatory variables. The result indicates that there is a relationship between child labor and all variables used in this model. Nonetheless, status as head of household and single parent woman are irrelevant as the significance value (α) is less than 5% by using the Wald Test Statistic. Thus, it is recommended to do some improvements in young people’s education system. Moreover, government policies that protect the human rights of child labors need to be done as a form of government intervention.

The purpose of this quantitative study is to investigate the role of government expenditure on food security and its model based on the Input Demand Function (IDF). This study uses secondary data collected from the Bureau of Statistics Centre of Indonesia, which consists of 23 regencies/municipalities in Aceh Province for the 2007-2016 period. The data is analysed using Two-Stage Least Square (2SLS). The analysis shows that food security in terms of availability, accessibility, and food utilisation was influenced by the farmers’ decisions regarding production inputs. In order to increase food availability, the government is partially responsible for the costs incurred by farmers for producing food. Furthermore, to raise food accessibility, utilisation, and farmers’ income, food prices need to be regulated such as the price of grain for farmers or the price of rice for producers. To conclude, the government needs to buffer the stock board and ensure controls are in place to stabilise food prices.

Poverty and income inequality are being one of the most challenging issues in many developing countries, including Indonesia. Considering the higher level of the poverty rate in Indonesia, the study about poverty reduction is crucial and currently under discussion in previous studies. Thus, this study is written to examine what is education and health budgets could be reducing the poverty rate in Indonesia. The study utilizes annual data gathered from the Central Bureau of Statistics over the 2007–2017 period and analyzed using panel data by assisting the Eviews-10. The empirical result finds that the budget allocated for education and health significantly reduce the poverty rate in Indonesia. Therefore, it is suggested that to further reduce the poverty level, the government should allocate more budget of education and health for the poor and there is a need to monitor the public service performance with the aim the allocation of expenditure can be more efficient and effective. Besides, it is necessary to increase the number of pro-poor programs such as free public health and education insurance to fulfill the basic needs of the poor.

As the most important factor in the world, palm oil is a crucial element that contributed to economic growth of a country. Besides as a role of the important vegetables oil, palm oil also gives a negative effect on environment through expanding the palm oil plantation. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effect of global crude palm oil (CPO) price, marketing margins, and palm oil plantations on environmental destruction in the short-term and long-term. For examining the short-term and long-term effect, this study used Johansen Cointegration approach involving the bivariate causality with the Pirwise Granger Causality test and multivariate causality relationships with the Wald test. Also, we analyzed the responds of independent variables to dependent variable using impulse response (IRF) and variance decomposition (VD). This study used a monthly secondary data starting on 2008 to 2017 i.e. Environmental Quality Index, Global CPO price, Marketing margins and palm oil plantations. The data collected from 5 sources i.e. Central Bureau of Statistic (BPS), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), World Trade Organization, Central Bank of Indonesia (BI) and the Central Bank of Malaysia (BNM). The results of analysis shows that there is long-term relationship of global CPO price, marketing margins, and palm oil plantations on environmental quality index. For short run, this study found that global CPO price has a significant positive effect on environmental quality index. Meanwhile, the size of palm oil plantation and marketing margins have a significant negative effect on environmental quality index in Indonesia. Also, using the bivariate test, this study proves that there is one way causality relationship between the global CPO prices, marketing margins and size of oil palm area on environmental quality index. In addition, the global CPO prices and marketing margins fluctuations causing shock in environmental quality index. Keywords: Global Crude Palm Oil Prices, Marketing Margin, Palm Oil Plantations, Environmental Quality IndexJEL Classifications: C01, C50, Q43, Q51DOI: https://doi.org/10.32479/ijeep.8010

Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is one indicator for measuring a country’s economic growth. However, the increase in GDP and population growth are affecting CO2 emissions. This study analyses the effects of GDP and population density on CO2 emissions in Indonesia. To this end, it used the Cobb-Douglas model, and parameter estimation using Ant Colony Optimisation algorithm. The analysis of the results reveals that GDP and population density influence CO2 emissions in Indonesia significantly, and significantly follows the Cobb-Douglas model with increasing return to scale characteristics. Thus, an increase in GDP and population density will lead to increased CO2 emissions in Indonesia. Keywords: Economic Growth, Gross Domestic Product, Population Growth, CO2 Emission, Ant Colony Optimisation Algorithm, Cobb-Douglas modelJEL Classifications: C61, O47, O150, Q530DOI: https://doi.org/10.32479/ijeep.8011

Both the Muslim and non-Muslim worlds have a shared commitment to mitigate environmental degradation and repair already degraded areas. However, not much has been said about the good environmental performance of the affluent states of the Muslim world. This study uses the Environmental Performance Index (EPI) produced by the University of Yale to analyse how to design better strategies for the upper-middle income (UMIE) and high-income Muslim countries (HIE) when dealing with their environmental performance. This study proposes that the choice of strategy should depend on the environmental and political economy of the countries, the status and ranking of their environmental performance, and an openness to learning from the successes of the environmental foreign policy successes of other affluent Muslim countries. Keywords: Environmental performance, Environmental degradation, Environmental foreign policy, EnergyJEL Classifications: O13, Q, Q56DOI: https://doi.org/10.32479/ijeep.7788

The indigenous people of Peninsular Malaysia, the Orang Asli, remain a largely marginalized and impoverished minority group to this day. One could attribute this to the legacy effects of a policy instituted by the British during its administration in Malaya. The purpose of this study is to determine whether the fundamental needs of the Orang Asli are being met by examining their poverty levels in relation to their subsistence and understanding. The programs and policies currently implemented by the government development authority that has been tasked with reducing the poverty among Orang Asli communities were also reviewed. A mixed-method approach was used by collecting data from 325 respondents composed of both adults and young people from the Orang Asli. Based on our results from the analysis of one sub-ethnic group in the state of Terengganu, this study concluded that the socioeconomic needs of the Orang Asli do not appear to have been addressed sufficiently under the current schemes of the development authority, which continues to pursue a colonial legacy materialization goal. In order to improve the wellbeing of the Orang Asli and other indigenous communities, this research recommends an urgent review of policies implemented by the current government administration, which would greatly reduce the negative impacts of a legacy of colonialism.

The paper emphasises the potentials of Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) to be adopted and implemented in Central Terengganu, referring to three districts, namely Kuala Nerus, Kuala Terengganu and Marang. The territorial waters of Terengganu Central are demarcated by the protected boundaries of the marine parks, namely Redang, Lang Tengah and Kapas Islands. These three marine park islands are major ecotourism destinations in Central Terengganu, but the development that has been carried out on the islands and areas surroundings their gateways in the mainland, to some extent, is not integrated and sustainable. The purpose of this study is to seek the answers to what extent the current and future development trends in Central Terengganu have addressed the multiple competing and conflicting uses related to socioeconomic development, marine/ocean governance and conservation. The qualitative techniques were used for analysis and a case study was used to understand the nature of government policies and management as well as the existing and future plans. To summarize, this study concluded that MSP is the best option for the Terengganu State Government to improve the management of coastal and marine resources for environmental sustainability and socio-economic planning in Central Terengganu.

The sustainable development becomes an inevitable paradigm today. It does not only concentrate on economic growth, but also pay attention to other issues on environmental sustainability such as justice, welfare, as well as the maintenance of social and cultural systems. The sustainable development has some indicators and should also proceed with a series of stages namely economic, ecological, political and social culture. Using qualitative data analysis, this study is written to identify whether or not the economic and ecological development in Aceh post-tsunami has met standards of sustainable development. Troubleshooting analysis is performed with statistical studies of a variety of documents compared to some facts and the evolving dynamics in the community that were recorded by media. Based on the central of statistics bureau, Aceh is one of the regions with the highest GDP in Indonesia and there are approximately 6 million hectares of forest and also rich in nature and marine resources. The result of this study shows Acehnese people actually trapped in poverty. It is very ironic because the majority of people are living in the location of natural resources such as forests and coastal areas, as well as natural gas industrial areas. Therefore, the Aceh Government should ensure the welfare of Acehnese people through an optimizing the utilization of the natural resources i.e. forest and coastal and also gas industry.
