The study looks at the problems facing coastal fishing communities. It highlights the impacts that, in the complex framework of the EU reforms, have manifested themselves on economic activities and on society. The aim of the paper is twofold: to examine small-scale artisanal fishing in an area of Southern Italy in order to develop resilience and diversification and at the same time to outline the profiles of local bluefish buyers to highlight development strategies for the sector. The research carried out through a direct survey by administering a questionnaire to fishermen operating in areas of Southern Italy and the data cross-referenced with the opinions of local consumers. A conjoint experiment, followed by a multiple correspondence analysis and cluster identification, was used to outline the profiles of local bluefish buyers. The results of the analysis reveal that the fish market and the restaurant sector are the main distribution channels preferred by fishermen. Furthermore, fishermen are very sensitive to environmental issues and are willing to collaborate and actively participate in the environmental protection of the sea. Consumers recognise the quality of local bluefish, and they implicitly perceive the sustainability of the method of capture. The results show the need to undertake synergistic actions for the fishing industry, capable of activating marketing strategies adequately to support, promote and develop the sector. The results of the study provide helpful information for food companies in order to better segment their market and target their consumers, as well as to effectively promote their product using brands, certifications and traceability.

Multifunctionality and social farming represent forms of resilience and innovation within urban and rural systems, making use of agricultural, rural, natural, and cultural resources to produce multiple benefits and eco-systemic services. Social farming (SF) introduces innovative activities capable of representing a factor supporting the competitiveness of the production system and represents a tool for responding to the growing needs of urban and rural populations in social, economic, and environmental terms, in relation to the offer of social- health, social-work, recreative and educational services. SF is an innovative model of territorial, participatory, relational, and community service development that looks to an inclusive, sustainable, fair, and supportive society. Its success is linked to the ability to spread within the economic system and become a circular economy model highlighting good practices and as a virtuous example for other companies. The purpose of this work is to examine the role and social impact that Social Farming has in the environmental, social, and cultural changes of the territories where they are located. Case studies in an area of Southern Italy—the Calabria region—were examined with multicriteria methodologies (social network analysis; multiple correspondence analysis) to identify the type of social activity carried out and the propensity to introduce innovations based on services ecosystems on farms. The results show the potential and value of the companies that carry out these social innovation activities. The analysis carried out has drawn some indicative profiles of socially oriented multifunctional companies.

Local food is increasingly appreciated by consumers who recognize to niche products more sustainable production systems. The aim of this work is to understand the micro supply chain production of a Slow Food brand cheese of an internal area of Calabria (Italy). The producers were interviewed and environmental conditions breeding techniques, productions and ways of selling cheese were examined. Consumer behaviour was explored through a survey, intercepting 230 consumers per comprendere le motivations that influence the consumption of local cheeses produced in internal rural areas and examine the factors contributing to animal welfare and food security of the obtained productions. The study adopts a multiple correspondence analysis to draw the profiles of consumers and formulate marketing strategies to support local farmers. The research highlights the positive effects of feeding fed on farms and the effects on animal welfare determined by the mechanical milking technique. The results indicate that the local cheese is linked to attributes of better quality due to the effects of the feed supplied to the farms and to the effects on animal welfare determined by the mechanical milking technique. The research also highlights the role that small and family zootechnical companies play in preserving internal areas and sustainable farms.

Ho.re.ca sector is a very complex system that over the years has given rise to various forms of catering in relation to the variety of demand and the organization of the offer. It can represent a key element of competitive development and promotion and an opportunity for local agri-food products. The aim of the work is to examine the structure and the various catering services offered by a Calabrian company that operates in the Ho.re.ca channel in order to develop/improve the competitiveness tools of agri-food companies operating in the area with particular reference to companies operating in internal areas in conditions of fragility and marginality. The dynamics that govern relations with suppliers of local agri-food products have been studied. The combination of surveys with the company and suppliers has been studied through the use of social network analysis (SNA). The level of loyalty that agricultural and agri-food companies achieve with the Ho.Re.Ca has also been identified. 44 Calabrian companies supplying agri-food products have been identified, divided by product category, by company name, by location, and by the level of loyalty. The results highlight a particular attention of the company examined towards quality products of Calabria origin, in some cases niche products with POD or PGI brand, mainly acquired directly from local agricultural producers and offering the possibility of being a strategic means of promotion and marketing.

The study examines the phenomenon of transhumance in Calabria, through two case studies. Unlike the other regions, the Calabrian transhumance is characterized by the majority use of sheep breeds, for the brevity of the tracks and for the difficulty of the same. Furthermore, although the phenomenon has historical roots, the passage of animals on “carrere” has always assumed a precarious character and has not left significant structures in the areas concerned. The study examines two transhumance routes in areas very close to the city of Reggio Calabria, in the south of Italy. That deals with routes historically used by shepherds to bring the flocks to higher altitudes and rich in water and pastures in the hot summer months. Results demonstrates that part of the first route has been absorbed by driveways, so its recovery, even for tourism purposes, seems difficult to propose. The second route, placed in environments that are not heavily populated and the environmental context is less compromised with more space to a hypothesis of recovery and enhancement, also with a view to widespread hospitality, a reception touristic model that in certain aspromontane areas has recorded great interest in recent years.

International studies are dealing with the promotion of sustainable food systems more frequently. Additionally, places of purchase and sharing in the choice of food to be consumed have become a network system for families. The aim of this work is to analyse the preferences of Swedish consumers for local/artisanal cheeses and the purchase motivations that guide their choices. We also studied the role played by consumers’ favourite shopping locations (retail store, hypermarket, city market, supply chain). On the one hand, we examined the attractiveness and the power exercised by the various stores and on the other hand, we viewed the consumer in relation to the frequency of purchase, and the confidence with the sales points. We interviewed 200 people in the city of Östersund, highlighting habits, consumption preferences and reasons for purchasing. A multiple correspondence analysis explores the reasons behind the purchase preferences of the local ‘Källarlagrad getost’ artisan cheese from the Slow Food brand. The representations of social network analysis are used to show the complex articulations that influence the choices of consumers in terms of type of cheese purchased/consumed and places of purchase/consumption. The results showed that Swedish consumers, in the purchase of cheeses, have a loyalty point at the point of sale, follow the advice of the seller and are attentive to the reputation of the product. Those who buy Källarlagrad getost are sensitive to safety, appreciate artisan cheeses and choose them for their versatility, have a strong connection with the territory and wish to contribute to supporting the local economy. Knowing these characteristics and preferences of Swedish consumers living in a city in the north of the country is important for marketing activities and for promoting tourism and sustainable gastronomy.

This study highlights the preferences and motivations of tourists for the choice of destinations to visit. Natural, cultural, gastronomic attractions, places of consumption, and identity/immaterial motivations are examined through social network analysis and validated through the multiple correspondence analysis (MCA). The study explores the relational variables that can explain the attractiveness of the places and the propensity to visit them. To identify the visitor profiles and the reasons behind their choices, a sample survey was carried out in Lipari, in the Aeolian Islands, interviewing tourists, residents, and people present on the island for work reasons. From the results obtained, profiles emerged with very different characteristics. They vary among those who are attentive to the identity and sustainability of the territory and appreciate the beauty of the sea to others who are attracted mainly for places of consumption and gastronomy, and finally, to people who are indifferent to the attractiveness of the place. This study contributes to the knowledge of the tourist understanding of fragile places with a strong tourist attraction and provides indications for better use of the resources present, oriented towards eco-sustainable hospitality systems and the environment. The study discusses the implications of its findings for future research and provides insights for planning tourism services.

Research on public markets in small provincial towns is scarce, particularly on the role they play in maintaining a relationship with the local culture, environment and production. This paper examines consumers’ habits and preferences for food shopping in three European regions with respect to the purchase of fish products. The goal is to investigate consumers’ preferences for local fish to highlight the motivations that lead to different choices. A multiple correspondence analysis explores the motivations behind purchasing preferences, showing the complex process that drives individual consumer choices. Based on 504 interviews conducted in cities and areas adjacent to the cities of Girona, Reggio Calabria, and Lipari, we found no evidence of converging habits and homogenization on preferences. It supports the perspective in which the interplay between local culture and consumption of local products is strictly associated.

The proposed work is intended to highlight certain routes born from a religious background that have become interesting from an environmental and naturalistic point of view. These routes can offer themselves within a framework of recovery and enhancement of local resources aimed at giving back to the communities concerned often forgotten testimonies of history and shared memory, fragments of life, literature, and art. The particular path of faith examined is that of the historical destination of the Sanctuary of the Madonna of the Mountain at Polsi in Aspromonte, long a place of devotion and faith. The objective of the work is to examine the conditions by which the pilgrimage can contribute even further to the creation of value and socio-economic development for the territories concerned, in a dual path that links together faith and the re-appropriation by the local community of places that have been contaminated and subjugated by the presence of the ‘ndràngheta, in order to promote virtuous processes of economic and social legality. This sees the Aspromonte as generator of sustainable development, of fair trade, of responsible tourism, and of ethical agri-food production.

Among several possible development activities, the Fishery Local Action Groups (FLAGs), activated with the EC Regulation 1198/2006, can promote fisheries-related tourism activities that may represent a driving sustainable force, for economic local development in coastal areas, in line with the EU objectives of reducing the fishing effort and, at the same time, fisheries-related tourism. The main objective of this study is to analyze the trend of the territory of the “Stretto” Coast FLAG in Calabria to diversify the fishing activities, also through the comparison with the Aeolian Islands, which are part of the “Islands of Sicily” FLAG. The methodology includes direct surveys through privileged witnesses such as fishermen and fishing cooperatives of the two areas. The results show some differences: in the Aeolian Islands the practice of fisheries-related tourism activities is conducted continuously all the year, in a few cases the fishermen also offer accommodation; on the contrary, in Calabria in the “Stretto” Coast FLAG vessels are of larger dimensions and fishing tourism is occasional and not widespread. Adequate promotion and marketing, and policy support are lacking in both areas.

Wine is a key element in the development and promotion of tourism. The purpose of this paper is to investigate, from the perspective of the growers, how a specific area - Aeolian Islands - is organized in order to develop wine tourism. The methodology employed for this study consisted of a combination of surveys, interviews and field observations with the suppliers. Results indicate that the implementation of wine tourism will be a significant challenge as the respondents report a lack of marketing and tourism management skill and knowledge. Most are small sized enterprises which means they have little man power available to devote to developing wine tourism; and there is a low level of reported cooperation amongst stakeholders
