Operating condition detection and fault diagnosis are very important for reliable operation of reciprocating compressors. Machine learning is one of the most powerful tools in this field. However, there are very few comprehensive reviews which summarize the current research of machine learning in monitoring reciprocating compressor operating condition and fault diagnosis. In this paper, the recent application of machine learning techniques in reciprocating compressor fault diagnosis is reviewed. The advantages and challenges in the detection process, based on three main monitoring parameters in practical applications, are discussed. Future research direction and development are proposed.

Single screw compressor serves as a core component in air compression system, mechanical vapor recompression system, low-temperature heat pump system and so on. However, under high temperature conditions, thermal deformation will lead to misaligned meshing between the vertical meshing pairs of the screw rotor and the star wheels. It would also lead to the serious abrasion of the components. Thus, it is necessary to investigate the thermal deformation mechanism of the single screw compressor to provide a guiding for clearance setting and strategy of assembling. In this paper, the thermal deformation mechanism of the meshing pairs in SSC is analyzed by using finite-element methods under the actual thermal boundary conditions tested by the infrared temperature camera. The results point out the deformation laws of the meshing pairs and torsional deformation of the screw rotor which cause the misaligned engagement. Influence of the thermal deformation on most of the clearances could be eliminated or controlled by setting reserved clearances. Such as the misaligned meshing could be controlled by reserving an axial assembling clearance and adjusting the bearing position. However, the torsional deformation of the screw rotor could only be modified by compensation machining. The method and results in this paper can be adopted for designing the meshing pairs and setting the design clearance of the compressor.

Frosting and fogging of automobile windshields is a common problem that emerges in daily driving. It is important and essential to quickly and completely defrost the windshield for safety purposes. In this study, a three-dimensional mathematical model was applied to investigate the flow distribution and flow characteristics on the windshield of a medium-size Model N800 truck. The simulation results were first compared with experimental data. The results showed that the simulation model could reliably predict the defrosting performance on the windshield. This model was then used to optimize the design of the defrosting duct that comprised the main part of the defroster. It was found that the guide plate and outlet position of the defrosting duct were the two major factors affecting the defrosting performance. Therefore, the guide plate was first optimized and the defrosting performance was analyzed. The results showed that the average pressure loss dropped by 21.56%, while the defrosting efficiency at the front white zone was improved to 89%. The position of the outlet of the airflow was further studied. The results showed that the defrosting efficiency at the front zone could be further improved to 99%.

The basic organic flash cycle (BOFC) system has difficulty in achieving the high system efficiency due to the great exergy destruction of the throttling process. To reduce the energy loss and increase the BOFC system’s efficiency, three improved systems including the regenerative organic flash cycle (ROFC) system and two novel organic flash Rankine cycle (OFRC) systems were presented in this work. Thermodynamic analysis including energy, exergy and economic analysis were conducted to evaluate the performance of the system, and system optimization based on the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm was performed to indicate the development potential of the system. In addition, performance comparison between four OFC systems and the basic organic Rankine cycle (BORC) system was also carried out. Obtained results showed that the largest exergy destruction of both the BOFC system and the ROFC system was caused by the throttling process, while the biggest energy loss of the two OFRC systems was caused by the heat transfer process in the heat recovery unit. Compared with the ROFC system and the OFRC-I system, the OFRC-II system was considered to be the most promising solution in enhancing the performance of the BOFC system. Finally, optimization results showed that the OFRC-II system had the higher global thermal and exergy efficiencies, compared to the BORC system.

Four-row star type reciprocating compressor was regarded as a compressor with low vibrations. However, an experiment of the new developed compressor shows serious vibration because of unbalanced force caused by the unique structural arrangement. In this paper, the investigation on the vibration balance approaches of four-row star type reciprocating compressor is carried out. The effects of cylinder arrangement, thermodynamic parameters and additional force on the vibration performance are investigated, which can effectively reduce the vibration and noise of the four-row star type reciprocating compressor and provide an optimization basis for the design of this type of compressor.

The wear of star-wheel teeth is an important problem in single screw compressors. In order to prolong the service life of star wheels, a new curved flank of the tooth is proposed. Section profile of the tooth flank is a curve, which could be elliptical, hyperbolic, involute, or new defined. The screw groove flank is the envelope surface corresponding to the surface of the tooth flank. During the tooth meshing with the groove, the contact line moves in the tooth flank area.

The impact of sildenafil on pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) in Chinese patients has been less investigated. A prospective, open‐label, uncontrolled and multicenter study, therefore, was carried out to address this issue. Ninety patients with multicause‐induced PAH received oral sildenafil (75 mg/day) for 12 weeks. The 6‐minute walk test (SMWT) and cardiac catheterization were performed at the beginning and the end of the 12 weeks. The primary endpoint was the changes in exercise capacity assessed by the SMWT; the secondary endpoint included assessment of functional class, evaluation of cardiopulmonary hemodynamics, and clinical worsening. Drug safety and tolerability were also examined. The results showed that there was a significant improvement in SMWT distances (342 ± 93 m vs 403 ± 88 m, P < .0001), Borg dyspnea score (2.9 ± 2.6 vs 2.4 ± 2.0, P = .0046), World Health Organization functional class, and cardiopulmonary hemodynamics (mean pulmonary artery pressure, P < .0001; cardiac index, P < .0001; pulmonary vascular resistance, P < .0001) after 12 weeks of oral sidenafil therapy. Almost all enrolled patients did not experience significant clinical worsening. This study confirms and extends the findings of previous studies relating to effects of sildenafil on PAH, suggesting that oral sildenafil is safe and effective for the treatment of adult patients with PAH in the Chinese population.

The envelope method can be used to model the spiral groove surface profile in single screw compressors produced by cylindrical milling using the contact lines of the cutter surface and the groove. However, the envelope method cannot predict the groove bottom profile accurately because it does not account for the boundary contact lines on the end face of the cutter. A new numerical contour method is proposed to model the groove bottom profile by identifying the contact points on the end face of the cutter to a set position on the spiral groove. Results show that the new method can calculate accurately both the boundary and the inner contact line and thus simulate the groove bottom profile exactly. This method could also be used to simulate other profiles of machines, such as rotor profiles of twin screw compressors and screw pumps.

This paper presents a new edge blunting method of the three screw pump rotor with an elliptic arc and equations of the rotor profile after edge blunting. Through comparisons of different geometrical parameters of the pump, i.e., flow area, contact line length per lobe, blow hole area, etc., the new profile is proved to be better than the existing profiles of the three screw pump. The new streamlined profile, with a significantly smaller blow hole area, is of reference significance for the optimization design and further improvement of three screw pump.

In machining of a single screw compressor, the milling technique of screw rotor grooves with cylindrical milling cutters has far higher machining efficiency than turning. But, the screw groove bottom surface produced by the flat end of milling cutters will fail to mesh with the flat tooth tip hermetically, and thus give rise to compressed gas leakage. This paper carries out a mathematic simulation of the screw groove bottom surface profiles. The research brings screw groove bottom profiles machined by different cylindrical milling cutters to light, and provides some references for designing the column envelope meshing pairs in single screw compressors.
