The article presents a sample of the thematic cartography that will be integrated into the Observatory of the Cultural Heritage of Galicia platform, a digital application in a website and App format. The proposed thematic cartography provides relevant information about the region’s heritage, demographics, and socioeconomic aspects for visitors undertaking cultural tourism in Galicia. Moreover, it provides a vital didactic resource for the teaching-learning of geography from an active, reflective and critical perspective, at all levels of education from primary education through to university.

The expression “The Way of St. James” is used to refer to the routes that pilgrims walk or ride to get to Santiago de Compostela. In 1987, it was declared the First European Cultural Route. In 1993, the French Way was declared a World Heritage Site and in 2015 the Northern Way received the same designation. At present, public institutions are trying to extend this classification to other routes. Each route has its own natural and cultural heritage, and each follows a separate path with varying features. Traditionally, the French route has been the most commonly followed, and more recently, the second most relevant route is the Portuguese Way. It has been one of the case studies of the EU-funded GEOARPAD project, which aims to contribute to the ongoing contemporary need to reflect on sustainable development strategies to promote sustainable cultural tourism and heritage education. This paper proposes a heritage-education-based project for the Portuguese Way of St. James. The starting point of this proposal is an analysis of the territorial heritage of the Galicia-Northern Portugal Euro-region. From here, we introduce forms of heritage communication based on participatory management strategies to promote new forms of cultural tourism and heritage education. As a result, this sustainable and dynamic development will hopefully inspire renewed DMO (Destination Management Organisation) by providing local communities and stakeholders with new strategic actions and solutions to address their needs.

The Galicia-North of Portugal Euroregion has a rich tangible and intangible cultural heritage with great potential as driver of local development and tourist attraction. However, in many cases this heritage is not sufficiently well known or appreciated by local communities and visitors. This situation may be due to the absence of appropriate digital initiatives to promote a better knowledge of the history, features and location of the heritage sites. In this context, and taking advantage of the possibilities offered by digitalisation, the GEOARPAD project has been developed as a joint action between Galician and Portuguese institutions (Cultural heritage of the Galicia-North of Portugal Euroregion: Enhancement and Innovation. Ref. 0358_GEOARPAD_1_E). As part of the INTERREG V-A Spain-Portugal 2014–2020 programme, its objective is to promote the identification, classification, protection and dissemination of the Euroregion’s cultural heritage. This article aims to present the process of creation of the Heritage Information System of the Galicia-North of Portugal Euroregion. Firstly, it describes the methodology that guided the semantic and geographic harmonisation of the cartography of Galicia and the North of Portugal. Secondly, it shows the result of the georeferencing of heritage sites in Galicia and the North of Portugal, which constituted the basis for the Heritage Information System. Thirdly, it presents the web application containing the system and explains its potential use for heritage management and the promotion of cultural and digital tourism. Finally, it introduces a digital atlas designed in order to make the Euroregion’s cultural heritage visible and enhance its use in primary and secondary schools.

The concern about the production of international standards to measure the sustainability of tourism is present today, especially the discourse on the introduction of new sources. This article aims to survey and describe the main approaches and methodologies to use big data to measure tourism sustainability. Successful cases are addressed by explaining the main opportunities and challenges for the creation of official tourist statistics. A comprehensive review of publications regarding this field was carried out by applying the systematic literature review technique. This contributes a knowledge base to destination management organisations to encourage the implementation of official tourism statistics systems using big data.

Spatial Data Infrastructures constitute an organisational and technological bet on the part of Public Administrations to make available the geographic information they collect or generate to institutions and citizens. In Spain, various initiatives have been developed at state, regional, local and cross-border levels, which have been integrated into the Spatial Data Infrastructure of Spain. In the case of Santiago de Compostela, a World Heritage historic city, two experiences have taken place: the Heritage Information System (SIP, by its Spanish acronym) and recently the Geoportal of Santiago de Compostela City Council. This work aims to present the experience of both initiatives as tools for heritage management and public knowledge. An evaluation of the design and functionality of the SIP over the 7 years since its implementation has also been carried out. For this purpose, four indicators have been established: use of international and European standards, compatibility, proactivity, and synergies between documentation centers. The study found that despite the functionality that the SIP had in its creation, the lack of foresight to maintain its systematization and updating led to it being outdated. However, the Geoportal of Santiago de Compostela City Council was created as a new tool for disseminating and managing heritage and council services among institutions, professionals and citizens.

Tourism has a leading role in heritage cities and this implies a major challenge. The overall objective of this paper is to evaluate the performance of tourism planning and management with the view of achieving sustainable tourism in the historic center of Santiago de Compostela, Spain. The study addresses topics collected during a long research process of more than 10 years, such as strategic tourism plans, the implementation of quality management systems for tourism, the tourist supply and the regulation of flows. The results show a destination that has introduced alternatives to improve the tourism experience and diversify its offer beyond the Camino de Santiago. There is also growing concern in promoting the sustainability of the historic center. From our point of view, the strengthening of synergies between the different agents involved in the tourism sector of the city has been a key factor in dealing with this situation. However, in this sense, the main problem which is decongesting the tourist flows to the cathedral and its surroundings is still unresolved.
