The preference and the development of electromobility are included among the priorities of transport policies in many European countries. This article deals with the issue of electric vehicle operation from the point of view of the environmental impact of electric power production, specifically the energy effectiveness of its production by utilizing primary power production sources. Differences in the effectiveness of the conversion of mixed forms of energy into electricity and their share in the process directly affect the final level of greenhouse gases (GHG) production, and thus the ecological footprint of electric vehicle operations. The specification of energy consumption and GHG production is based on the principles of the EN 16 258: 2012 standard, which considers legislative-regulated power plant effectiveness values, statistical values of GHG emissions from electricity production, and real energy consumption values of an electric vehicle fleet. The calculation takes into account the share of primary sources and the efficiency of electricity production and effectiveness of electricity distribution in each of the evaluated countries. The specific research study is performed by comparing measured parameters for individual countries chosen from the Central Europe region. The results of the study show that the quantification of the positive environmental consequences of increasing electromobility varies greatly in different countries, which means full-scale deployment of electromobility does necessarily deliver the sustainability of transport that was expected from it.

The article deals with the problem of electric power production in terms of environmental impact, in particular the energy efficiency of its production to utilize primary sources. The efficiency of its production directly depends on the composition of primary sources and technologies used. Difference in efficiency by converting various forms of energy into electrical power and their ratio in the use directly affect the resulting efficiency, production of emissions and thus the environmental impact. Electric traction, its production, is burdened less efficient than other types of tractions used in transport, but at the final reconciliation of their consumption in vehicles, this difference decreases or delays because the vehicles themselves work with different conversion efficiency of its traction on mechanical work, vehicle driving.

Energy losses due to friction and wear in reciprocating machines could be potentially reduced by applying new surface, materials and lubrication technologies for friction reduction and wear protection. In this paper, the tribological properties of ferrous-based reinforcements are tested and compared with aluminum alloy (EN AlSi10Mg) as a base material for cylinder of air compressor. The ball-on-plate CSM tribometer is used to carry out these tests under dry sliding conditions and constant sliding distance, for three different values of sliding speed and normal load. The wear factor is analyzed by using Taguchi method as well as artificial neural network-based model, with the aim of finding the optimal parameters. The result of signal-to-noise ratio and analysis of variance shows that the best tribological properties were achieved with reinforcements. Material has the greatest impact on the wear factor (35.54%), followed by load (22.16%) and sliding speed (6.01%). A good superposition was reached of the results obtained by the Taguchi method with the results of the artificial neural network-based model. According to the analysis of surface micrographs, it can close that the bonding material is the most dominant mechanism of wear for both tested materials.

Compression ratio has very important influence on fuel economy, emission, and other performances of internal combustion engines. Application of variable compression ratio in diesel engines has a number of benefits, such as limiting maximal in cylinder pressure and extended field of the optimal operating regime to the prime requirements: consumption, power, emission, noise, and multifuel capability. The manuscript presents also the patented mechanism for automatic change engine compression ratio with two-piece connecting rod. Beside experimental research, modeling of combustion process of diesel engine with direct injection has been performed. The basic problem, selection of the parameters in double Vibe function used for modeling the diesel engine combustion process, also performed for different compression ratio values. The optimal compression ratio value was defined regarding minimal fuel consumption and exhaust emission. For this purpose the test bench in the Laboratory for Engines of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Kragujevac, is brought into operation.

Human activities, in particular transport, are partially responsible for the problem associated with the greenhouse effect, and therefore global warming. The transport sector is responsible for approximately 25% of carbon dioxide emissions and consumes almost 50% of global oil production. Natural gas as engine fuel has many advantages: lower costs, lower emissions because of more complete combustion, lower noise and longer engine life. The goal of the European Union is that alternative sources of energy represent 20% of total consumption by 2020. According to the global strategy these problems are solving through a series of initiatives and innovations including the introduction of natural gas buses in city transport. If we take into account the existing situation in city transport, the strategic proposal is to begin by retrofitting diesel buses into dedicated natural gas vehicles. This paper analysed some benefits, which summarized according to the author's experiences about the introduction of the compressed natural gas buses in urban transport.

Noise pollution due to road traffic is a major global concern because of its negative impact on the quality of life in communities everywhere. In Republic of Serbia, traffic noise has become an increasingly noticeable and serious problem in large cities like Belgrade, Novi Sad, Niš, Kragujevac and Kraljevo. To resolving the current situation, in cities where exists the intensive noise pollution from diesel vehicles, as a special contribution to reducing noise in road traffic, we were studied the replacement of the existing city busses with new propulsion system on natural gas, resulting in less noise emission. The reduction of noise emission was confirmed during parallel tests of the buses with drive on diesel and natural gas. Intensive noise measurements were conducted according to the Regulation UN ECE 51R.

More than half a century, the scientific community is trying to understand the mechanisms and conditions of pollution dispersion within urban areas. Thereat, special attention has been focused on specific areas, such as a street canyon, in which harmful concentrations higher than allowed are more likely registered. However, there is still a controversy about the conditions of occurrence and impact of the individual air pollution components due to fluctuations of key contributions. Given that OSPM model is a well-known semi-empirical model specializing in the assessment of air quality within a street canyon, after its testing and validation, the results of subsequent simulations were used as a basis for planning a special experiment in order to implement 48 full factorial designs, where using the response surface methodology, as the final objective, an answer was precisely given on the impact and contribution of urban air pollution components. In addition to the main objective of this study, as a secondary, but not less important result defining emission factors for CO and NOx can be emphasized, which to date have not been determined for the fleet of the Republic of Serbia.

Compression ratio (CR) is a design parameter with highest influence on efficiency, emission and engine characteristics. In conventional internal combustion (IC) engines, the compression ratio is fixed and their performance is, therefore, a compromise between conflicting requirements. One fundamental problem is that drive units in the vehicles must successfully operate at variable speed and loads and in different ambient conditions. If a diesel engine has a fixed CR, a minimal value must be chosen that can achieve a reliable self-ignition when starting the engine in cold start conditions. In diesel engines, variable compression ratio (VCR) provides control of peak cylinder pressure, improves cold start ability and low load operation, enabling the multi-fuel capability, increase of fuel economy and reduction of emissions. By application of VCR and other mechanisms, the optimal regime fields are extended to the prime requirements: consumption, power, emission, noise, etc., and/or the possibility of the engine to operate with different fuels is extended. An experimental Diesel engine has been developed at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Kragujevac. The changes of CR are realized by changing the piston chamber diameter. Detailed engine tests were performed at the Laboratory for IC engines. Special attention has been given to decrease of fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. An optimal field of CR variation has been determined depending on the given objectives: minimal fuel consumption, minimal nitric oxides, and particulate matter emissions, etc.

From our perspective, a global technology development should be focused on resolving the issues of environmental impact and conservation of available natural energy resources. New technological solutions and alternative fuels, such as Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), have increasingly more application for modern engines and vehicles. If we take into account the situation in city transport, where primarily vehicles with diesel engines are used, a strategic proposal is to begin by retrofitting these into bi-fuel or dedicated Natural Gas Vehicles (NGVs). This paper analyzes the retrofit of a diesel bus into dedicated NGV. To confirm the safety of the vehicle in city transport, we addressed the problem of mounting a gas rack with CNG cylinders on the roof of a retrofitted city bus, according to UN ECE Regulation No. 110. This assembly is the most critical part of the retrofitted bus because of the concentration of stress due to increased mass and the application of a specific installation for supply of CNG from the cylinders to the engine. These regulations must be met in all parts of the vehicle, but we only focused on those areas affected by the retrofit to NGV.
