The last two European fisheries funds have provided an opportunity to finance projects seeking the development and job creation in fishing dependent areas. In this line, Fisheries Local Action Groups (FLAGs) have been created and they have been financing different types of projects, many of them linked to fisheries diversification through tourism. A part of these projects is linked to the recovery and enhancement of the marine and fishing culture, which has made possible the creation of a very complete network of maritime museums, cultural routes, etc. This work aims to identify, quantify and characterize cultural projects related to fishing financed in Spain through European fishing funds. A total of 136 cultural projects in five different categories have been found. The most popular projects through the two founding programs are related to tangible and intangible heritage projects and museums. The number of projects more or less maintained throughout the two periods is analyzed. Projects related to routes have been reduced by half from the first founding program, while festival projects more than doubled in the second founding program over the first.

Researchers, environmentalists, as well as fisheries and retailers, have been focusing their attention on the design, use and effects that fish ecolabels have on sustainability. The fish processing industry and large retailers have rapidly adopted several market-based standards, with consequences for two major stakeholders: fishermen and consumers. Although the standards have shown rather positive results, from the perspectives of marine biodiversity conservation, the fish industry and trade, it is not clear how they are able to support a change in people’s awareness about sustainability. For this reason, the present work reviews and analyses the literature, produced in the last ten years, regarding two international, private and voluntary ecolabels in the fish industry: FOS and MSC. The results confirm the relevant role these ecolabels are playing in promoting awareness about sustainable fish, describing the terms of this ongoing change and also proposing new insights from the literature to further reinforce this process. In particular, a multi-stakeholder approach is suggested for the production side so as to better exploit the sustainable potential of the system inaugurated by the ecolabel, while, for the consumption side to further spread knowledge about marine stock status and ecolabels’ meaning and scope, which would accelerate the ongoing process.

Community-led Local Development (CLLD) offers a novel bottom-up approach to achieving territorial development in EU fisheries and aquaculture areas. Through Fisheries Local Action Groups (FLAGs), CLLD sets out to increase both employment and territorial cohesion by bringing together local stakeholders in the selection and implementation of projects which meet the specific needs of the FLAG area and its fisheries communities. Through an analysis of 2691 FLAG projects, this study offers comparative insights into the implementation of CLLD across eight EU Member States. The analysis shows that there are three areas that account for almost 90% of total budget spending, projects attributed to adding value to the fisheries value chain, the diversification fisheries activities, and those with socio-cultural focus, while fewer projects attributed to the environment or increasing representation in local governance. The results of this analysis are compared with the priorities expressed by FLAGs at the beginning of the program, as well as the national Operational Programs of individual Member States.

In recent years, competition has been growing between aquaculture and local fishing for using the same space: the sea. However, this same geographical space holds different meanings and evokes different feelings in the aquaculturists and local fishers. This article, through the analysis of interviews with members of both parties operating in the Spanish Mediterranean, reveals a strong homogeneity within each group. However, a strong discrepancy was also detected between the groups in their respective conceptions of the sea and its inhabitants (both human and non-human) and their involvement with it. Both collectives seem to live in the same place but worlds apart. Any attempt to establish a marine policy which seeks to conciliate the interests of the two groups may be doomed to failure if, along with economic and institutional conflicts, it does not also consider the great divergences between them with regards to the way they understand and live their shared place of work, the sea.

Traditionally the role of women in fishing has gone largely unnoticed, but now in recent years there has been a growing interest about them. However, the task of identifying and quantifying the role played by women in fisheries has yet to be fully developed. This study tackles the role of women in fishing from a double perspective, both quantitatively and qualitatively, focusing on the case of inshore fishing in the Valencia Community (VC) in Spain. Official statistics now incorporate some important changes in order to reflect a more realistic view of women’s involvement in fishing. However, beyond "official" trades and figures, there is a wealth of work largely done by women that goes unnoticed but it's essential for the fishing sector. Overcoming this, introducing women into fishing studies, statistics and fishing institutions, recognising the work of women in the fishing sector or promoting women who work in tasks traditionally carried out by men is a challenge for such a traditional sector, immersed in profound economic and social change.

Fisheries and aquaculture are incorporating environmental management system (EMS) tools and certified sustainable products as part of their strategic priorities. Firms have different ways to certify their environmental actions: the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001 and the blue Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). ISO 14001 certifies the adoption of EMSs; and the MSC label guarantees the use of seafood that can be traced back to a sustainable resource. The economic impact and the differences between eco-labeling certifications are topics of great interest for environmental management. This paper analyzes and compares the effect of ISO14001 and the MSC on the results of the Spanish fishing auxiliary industry. We analyzed data from 561 Spanish firms and deployed a multivariate quantitative analysis with data retrieved from the financial accounts of Spanish fish processing and preserving firms, in different economic and financial ratios. Results show that certified firms get better economic ratios, although these benefits are not due to an operational efficiency improvement. Firm size is found to have a moderating effect on the relation between certification and economic performance. Environmental certification on firms’ performance provides key information for environmental management-related decision making.

Diversification of fisheries has one of its main lines of development in tourism, especially in countries as touristic as Spain. An important part of the European Fisheries Funds (EFFs) has subsidized, through the Fisheries Local Action Groups, local development projects in fishing zones with a large part of these projects related to tourism, including nautical tourism. In this new context it is possible to quantify and analyse the subsidized projects’ typology and the relationship between recreational and professional fishing. This work analyses 705 projects financed by European funds, mainly the EFF, of which 172 are related to tourism and 48 to nautical tourism. The objective is to categorize and characterize the subsidized projects and, subsequently, to verify the degree of relationship, if any, between the projects of nautical tourism and professional fishing.

The management of Spanish coastal fisheries is based on a mixed model where the centralised action of the Government is combined with the self‐organisation of fishers in cofradías (guilds). These institutions have economic and political functions, intermediating between the State and the fishing sector and mediating in the conflicts that may occur. They also have welfare and mutualist tasks. This original and traditional co‐management model is part of the social capital of traditional Spanish fishing. The aim of this paper is to explore the possibilities of these Spanish fishers’ organisations in order to improve the legitimacy of the fishery system and the sustainability of fisheries. Our hypothesis is that updating and adapting some aspects of the cofradías model could produce efficient forms of collaborative management and lead to improvements in the sustainability of fisheries. To validate this hypothesis the study analyses 69 face‐to‐face interviews in 21 Spanish–Mediterranean guilds. The analysis will focus on three core aspects: the control of fishing resources; the integration of fishing knowledge in the management system; and, finally, the guilds contribution to the legitimacy of the system in the eyes of the fishers. In this paper we analyse economic data over a period of 5 years from the Smith Travel Research (STR) database using an event study technique to compare economic performance among a total of 27,207 hotels, 4339 of them located in US touristic clusters. The aim of the research is to determine if the cluster effect is affecting the economic performance of hotels. Hotels are segmented and compared to similar groups in terms of revenue, scale, location, and affiliation, and then each of the hotels within a touristic cluster is compared to a similar group of outside-cluster hotels. Though the mean values for economic performance are higher than those properties located in clusters, specific analysis suggests that the cluster effect is not affecting all the hotels in the same way and that property level influences the economic performance of hotels within a touristic cluster.

A study has been carried out of the fisheries diversification projects in Spain during the period 2007–14, most of which were founded through Axis 4 of the European Fisheries Fund (EFF). On the one hand, the investments have been classified by areas of diversification in order to know how and where investment has been made and the quantities involved. On the other hand, the effectiveness of the different projects has been analysed from the point of view of the Fisheries Local Action Groups (FLAGs) managers. The results of this analysis may be useful for designing future diversification strategies in rural coastal areas, as well as for implementing similar strategies in other countries.

Recent European policy highlights the need to promote local fishery and aquaculture by means of innovation and joint participation in fishery management as one of the keys to achieve the sustainability of our seas. However, the implicit assumptions held by the actors in the two main groups involved – innovators (scientists, businessmen and administration managers) and local fishermen – can complicate, perhaps even render impossible, mutual understanding and co-operation. A qualitative analysis of interviews with members of both groups in the Valencian Community (Spain) reveals those latent assumptions and their impact on the respective practices. The analysis shows that the innovation narrative in which one group is based and the inventions narrative used by the other one are rooted in two dramatically different, or even antagonistic, collective worldviews. Any environmental policy that implies these groups should take into account these strong discords.

This paper investigates the role of the Friend of the Sea (FOS) scheme as a market tool for sustainable competitive advantage. To capture this effect, we apply a theoretical framework based on the stakeholder theory (SHT) and the natural-resource-based view (NRBV) to two case studies each in Italy and Spain. Our model allows us to explain the main factors determining an effective and competitive sustainable business model in the fishery sector. The results confirm the relevant influence of market forces in acquiring FOS certification and the role of the same as a counterpart to state authority.

A cluster is a geographical concentration of interrelated firms. Cluster theory states that the synergies created inside the cluster (by the interactions between firms that compete and those that collaborate) enhance the productivity and innovation of firms and therefore their economic performance. While manufacturing industries have been widely studied from the clustering perspective, service clusters and specifically touristic clusters have received less attention. In this paper, we identify U.S. touristic clusters using a concentration measure, the Location Quotient. Then we check whether hotels located in touristic clusters obtain higher economic results than those hotels located in areas where the level of touristic-related business concentration does not get the critical mass to consider it a cluster (instead of reducing their benefits due to the high level of competitors nearby). Our results find significant differences between the two sets of hotels. The effect is stronger for subsegments of hotels based on their star category, location, and management structure. Specifically, we demonstrate that the differences are more pronounced within luxury and upscale hotel categories and within chain-managed hotels. The differences are less important in resort and airport locations than in small-metro/town, urban, and suburban areas. These results have important location implications for managers. They also contribute to understanding that economies of agglomeration lead to benefits from being located closely and in highly concentrated industries. But there is still a lot of research needed to better understand the relations between cooperation and competition within touristic clusters and how these enhance the economic performance of hotels.

This chapter exploits a data set of 6118 Spanish firms from 2008 SABI Database (Economic Register) to analyse if there is any relation between economic indicators and the use of the ISO 14001 eco-management tool. Using quantitative analysis techniques applied to the Spanish food industry we try to make a contribution, on one side, in understanding the role of proactive environmental management tools and incremental organizational eco-innovation in creating value in the Spanish food sector by means of an analysis of the effects of the ISO 14001, and on the other side, identifying the aspects that determine whether a food company minimises its environmental impact as a result of its innovative activity, and evolves from being innovative to eco-innovative. Results show significant differences in most of the analysed variables among studied groups.
