Edward Sazonov is James R. Cudworth Endowed Professor and Head of the Computer Laboratory of Ambient and Wearable Systems at the University of Alabama. He received his Diploma of Systems Engineer from the Khabarovsk State University of Technology in Russia in 1993 and a Ph.D. in computer engineering from West Virginia University in 2002. His research interests include wearable devices, sensor-based behavioral informatics, biomedical signal processing, and pattern recognition. Dr. Sazonov has developed various wearable devices in his laboratory, including a wearable sensor for detecting and characterizing food intake (Automatic Ingestion Monitor, AIM), a physical activity and gait monitor integrated into a shoe insole (SmartStep, Bluetooth Innovation WorldCup 2009 winner), and a wearable sensor system for monitoring cigarette intake. His research in the laboratory has been recognized with several awards, including best paper awards and the President's Research Award at The University of Alabama. Dr. Sazonov has served as a Fulbright Distinguished Chair for the University of Newcastle in Australia and received support for his research from various sources, including the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the National Academies of Science, as well as state agencies, private industry, and foundations. He serves as a Specialty Chief Editor for Wearable Electronics and Frontiers in Electronics and as an associate editor for several IEEE journals
