Carlos Abreu (Lic'05, MSc'08, PhD'14) is an Assistant Professor at the Technology and Management School of the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo (ESTG-IPVC), Portugal, and a researcher at CMEMS - Center for Microelectromechanical Systems, University of Minho. In 2020 and 2021, he joined the European Commission Expert Panel, collaborating with the Executive Agency for Small & Medium-sized Enterprises (EASME) in evaluating 12 grant proposals submitted in response to the calls EMFF-BEW-2019 and EMFF-BEW-2020. In 2014, he received his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Minho. In 2015, during his PhD research, he was awarded the Clinical Engineering Manuscript Award by the Clinical Engineering Division of the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE). He participated as a researcher in 4 R&D funded projects (SAICT-POL/23997/2016, POCI-01-02B7-FEDER-070090, POCI-03-33B5-FSE-072070, NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-000043), being task leader in one of them (NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-000043), and co-organized several international scientific events. He supervised several BSc and MSc students in the projects he was involved in promoting the training and engagement of young researchers. He collaborated with several companies as a mentor to several students during their internships. His research interests focus on Medical Cyber-Physical Systems, IoT/IoMT, Embedded Systems, Medical Devices, and Diabetes Technology.
