While prior studies recognize the importance of organizational capabilities for family firm sustainability, current research has still failed to empirically identify the role of different types of knowledge accumulation with regard to these organizational capabilities. Based on the dynamic capabilities theory, the main goal of this paper is to address this research gap and to explore the relationships between both internal and external knowledge accumulation, and ordinary organizational capabilities. This research also contributes to analyzing the complex effect of the family firm essence, influenced by both family involvement and generational involvement levels, as an antecedent of internal and external knowledge accumulation. Our analysis of 102 non-listed Spanish family firms shows that the family firm essence, which is influenced by the family involvement, strengthens only the internal knowledge accumulation but not the external one. Furthermore, our study also reveals that both internal and knowledge accumulation are positively related to ordinary capabilities.

Driven by increasing awareness of the importance of family firms in most countries, the interest in family business studies is growing at a rapid pace. The entrepreneurial potential of family-owned businesses has been gaining even more attention among scholars and institutions since the 1980s and 90s. This fact joined to the fact that family firms are the most extended type of businesses all around the world has pushed a growing number of higher education institutions to introduce family business education programs in their curricula. Family business education at prominent universities provides high-level support for family SMEs due to such complexities of a family and their needs to the dynamics of a competitive business which can be quite challenging. It is therefore attractive to investigate and compare what characterizes the family business education programs in USA and Spain, including an overview of the most recent offerings among the most prominent higher education institutions.

Purpose This study aims to shed light on the lack of understanding and previous mixed results regarding why and how some internationalised firms take advantage of host-home country similarity (HHS) while others do not. Design/methodology/approach Direct and mediating hypotheses are examined through an empirical investigation of 156 CEOs in internationalised Spanish companies, using structural equation modelling validated by factor analysis. Findings The results suggest that exploitation (EI) and exploration (ER) constitute important learning mechanisms that impact on the liability of foreignness when internationalising a business. In particular, the positive influence that HHS has in international firm performance (IP) depends on both exploitative and exploratory learning. Practical implications This research adds insights into the importance of two of the main components of organisational learning (i.e. ER and EI) as mediators of the HHS and IP relationship, which can help senior managers or business owners make consistent decisions by matching potential international market locations with firm learning factors. Originality/value This study clarifies contradictory theoretical assertions and mixed empirical results about how HHS impacts on international performance. In particular, by responding to recent calls for research, this study has shown that organisational learning is a key component in the aforementioned link where ER and EI positively mediate this relevant relationship.

Throughout the years, the concept of dominant logic has gained interest in management due to its recognized potential for strategic analysis in organizations. However, a literature review reveals the need yet to strengthen an operationalization approach to assess the dominant logic of organizations. Thus, the first objective of this chapter is to advance our understanding of this concept by exploring the cognitive and behavioral elements addressed in the literature. As a result, key elements have been identified to assess the dominant logic of organizations. The second objective of this paper is to estimate the relationships between the firms’ performances as a function of the cognitive and behavioral competences of dominant logic, pointing out the importance of showing linkages between cognition, behavior, and organizational outcomes. Multiple linear regression (MLR) analyses were employed based on a sample of 281 high-performing firms from Mexico. In our view, this study contributes to the relevance of human capital and how it translates into an organizational dominant logic with implications to organizational outcomes.

Sustainable and responsible investing (SRI) is a strategy that seeks to combine both financial return and social good. The need to create and preserve SRI represents a key argument in investment decision-making, which leads other firms and investors to make strategic decisions beyond financial logic, based on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors. Within this framework, this paper aims to further clarify the understanding of potentially profitable strategies for firms during a global crisis such as a pandemic. Both primary and secondary data were gathered, and descriptive analyses were conducted. In Spain, several IBEX-35 companies announced donations amid the COVID-19 crisis. First, companies were classified into two groups based on donations made. For this, we searched for ESG online news. Then, profitability records amongst companies were identified and compared. In the trading session after the announcements, we found 12 of the 35 companies that made donations had a higher performance index of more than 2 and 3 points over the companies that did not make donations. With a weekly perspective, the difference was 91 and 60 basis points, respectively. These results suggest that in times of upheaval, investors base their strategy on ESG factors, contributing to the emerging literature on individual motives of SRI. Second, by conducting a survey and collecting data from 575 Spanish citizens, we conclude that after this crisis, people´s perceptions towards corporate social responsibility (CSR) will change, affecting consumption preferences in those companies that exhibited socially irresponsible or unsupportive behaviour. Hence, the reputation of firms, their social image, and social trust will play an important role in the near future.

As the aging population is rapidly increasing and life expectancy rates rise around the world, the different economies are faced with new challenges to provide adequate care for their senior citizens aged 60 and over, including health services and pension options. While retirement age is being increased and pension plans appear insufficient, such uncertainty is driving seniors to uphold an economic activity to pursue a better quality of life. Thus, entrepreneurship is becoming a common practice, and senior entrepreneurs have become one of the fastest-growing groups around the world. Senior entrepreneurship is recognized to have the potential to affect economic growth, hence carrying social and economic benefits for the economies. Based on data from the Adult Population Survey 2013-2017 from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, the authors of this chapter used binomial logistic regression analysis considering individual factors related to senior entrepreneurial intention in eight countries in Latin America (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, and Peru).

The economic globalization and increased competitive pressures for most firms demand innovative, efficient, and effective management strategies to comply with such dynamic, increasingly technological, and highly uncertain environments. Faced with this scenario, companies need to deploy critical strategies to survive and flourish in the long term, breaching challenges, seizing opportunities to hold a competitive position. The uniqueness of family firms means that they face a series of specific challenges, and whose analysis has eclipsed the study of other relevant aspects of change and development. Vital strategies require more than just focusing on the internal and external environment; those must also involve a constant search to integrate and coordinate the resources and actions that support competitive advantages and superior performance. The authors of this book review the different scenarios for entrepreneurship and family firms and propose strategies to tackle the challenges and seize the possibilities to grow in this competitive environment.

Family firms’ (FFs) importance for industrialized and developing countries and the growing competition has led to an increased interest in knowing how FFs develop their competitive strategies. Since FFs usually have a long-term vision when deciding how to compete, analyzing competitive strategies—usually linked with the long-term—makes even more sense. Furthermore, FFs’ behavior is especially interesting when they have been internationalized. Thus, the purpose of our study is to improve the understanding of the competitive strategies of FFs’ internationalizing to Mexico, namely, exploitation (at a national level) and exploration (at international level). Briefly, a firm’s exploitation strategy is characterized by better-using firms’ existing resources and knowledge, whereas a firm’s exploration strategy involves exploring new ways of doing. Based on data collected from 81 CEOs of Spanish firms that have been internationalized to Mexico, we use partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) technique. We conclude that FFs’ exploitation strategy (at a national level) has a positive impact on firms’ exploration strategy (at international level). In other words, being more efficient and leveraging current knowledge at a national level help to pursue opportunities internationally actively.

The assessment of the university and family social environments is relevant due to the influence during the individual's formative years, effecting the individual's development, career and occupational preferences. In an attempt to deepen the understanding of social capital, the authors proposed an examination of its dimensionality. Hypotheses were formulated building upon three dimensions—cognitive, structural, and relational—embedded in both contexts as determinants of entrepreneurial self-efficacy and intention. Implications are discussed promoting an appropriate social capital dimension and favorable environment for individuals to access information, resources, and support, with the purpose to foster and motivate their entrepreneurial spirit. Structural equation modeling was used considering 399 undergraduate students from universities in Mexico and Spain.

From its pre-Columbian origins, the implementation of the Solidarity Economy has been growing during these last decades in the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean and accelerated the process as it has been developing in the continent of the denominated “New Economy.” This work is a theoretical article with the objective of analyzing the two modern ways of implementing the Solidarity Economy: through the creation of quadruple helix models based on solidarity (Mexico) or through the practical application of McClelland’s N-effect using civil society from virtuous circles of community economic drivers (Puerto Rico). Because of this implementation process, the Solidarity Economy has ceased from being a guild and welfare, to become an economic and financial alternative for economically disadvantaged sectors based on shared values and a shared project. These analyses are complemented by a SWOT analysis and by the theoretical study of the direct relationship between the Solidarity Economy and the combination of social entrepreneurship and transformational entrepreneurship to create, in a novel way, virtuous circles of economic growth. The article concludes with ideas that briefly emphasize the importance of applying open cooperativism in the fight against inequality and poverty.

The digital world is changing at an extraordinary phase. The never-ending advances in new information and communication technologies (ICT) have more than ever changed the way in which we live, communicate, and process information. This has reshaped our habits to cope with a world constantly demanding new daily virtual experiences. People of all ages are in need to grip these experiences in one way or another. Regarding the advances in ICT, the internet alongside digital and social media have created whole new possibilities to gather real-time data and store valuable information while being virtually connected at all times. This postulates an evident challenge for companies to capitalize on the possibilities of digital marketing media and an opportunity to reach customers effectively using metadata and other resources virtually available. In this chapter, the authors used OLS regressions using Google Trends query data from 2008 to 2016 to measure the growing interest in digital marketing and other related topics and the monetization of such interest in the Spanish media sector.

This chapter aims to perform a systematic review of the most recent publications in innovation within the field of family business. A comprehensive systematic search in Clarivate Analytics Web of Science through December 2017 allowed the authors to retrieve 389 peer-reviewed articles. After careful screening, the final sample was reduced to 152 documents from 72 journals. The characteristics of the scientific journals, the diverse topics currently addressed, and the main lines of research were identified. The results revealed the existence of a highly diversified field of research with a wide variety of topics, receiving a growing interest and not limited to specialized journals nor a reduced number of researchers. All of this is indicative of an advance in the field to consolidate innovation as a high potential area of study. This allows researchers to reflect on the current status and research opportunities to contribute to the development of this field.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore to what extent different obstacles (financial, knowledge, market, and perception) affect the propensity of Mexican family firms to engage in innovation activity. Second, it examines whether the perception of these obstacles differs between two subgroups of family firms, considering levels of ownership and family management control. Design/methodology/approach Information was gathered through a CIS methodology-based questionnaire applied to 161 CEOs of Mexican family firms. Binomial logistic regressions were performed identifying obstacles that were truly relevant for the family firm subgroups in the sample. Findings For subgroup 1, knowledge and market factors were significant and negatively related to the propensity to engage in innovation activities; for subgroup 2, only market factors were relevant. The results also show how the tenure of the CEO, the number of generations involved, and the family involvement in management and non-management positions affect the results obtained. Practical implications Implications for family business scholars embrace the assessment criteria of different family business definitions. While the implications for managers and policy makers include the recognition of the factors that affect innovation in Mexican family firms in order to design and implement adequate strategies to overcome them. Originality/value This study addresses some of the raised demands in the literature. First, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, it is the first attempt to explore the factors hampering innovation in family firms in Latin America. Second, this study was undertaken in response to the call for exploring variations in innovation behavior across different family business types in regards to ownership and family management control. Moreover, this study responds to the call to analyze financial and non-financial factors separately and to expand the geographical areas, sectors, and sizes of family firms, more specifically in Latin America.
