In the last decades, several indicators are showing the inadequacy of countries' economic models. Changes in these models are necessary to contemplate the concept of sustainable development. In this sense, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals were published by United Nations to guide companies, countries and people. Volunteer actions are important initiatives for this. This kind of initiative can be described as the act of helping someone, aiming to contribute to a fairer society in which charity and citizenship are present. The main objective of this study is to analyze the main aspects that influence Brazilian companies' employees to participate in volunteer programs and, to identify how these aspects may be grouped into factors. Initially, a bibliographic study was carried out to identify the main aspects that influence the participation of companies' employees in volunteer programs. With this information, a questionnaire was structured and used in a survey. Data analysis was performed via exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and five from seven aspects analyzed were validated. They are grouped into two factors named “personal aspects” and “institutional aspects”. The first factor better explains the aspects mentioned. The results presented here may be useful for managers of volunteer programs and researchers interested in the theme.

The face-to-face university classes were abruptly transferred to virtual environments during the pandemic of COVID-19, which generated changes in teaching routine and environmental impacts associated with them. Considering this reality, studies comparing the environmental impacts of face-to-face and remote classes can be of great value. In this sense, this study performed a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of face-to-face and remote university classes in a Higher Education institution in the context of COVID-19. Inputs of energy and materials (food, office materials), outputs (air and water emissions, and solid waste) were gathered in situ for the functional unit of 2 hours of face-to-face or virtual class per week for 60 engineering students. Thirteen midpoint impact categories were selected by using the recent Impact World+ midpoint method for Continental Latin America, version 1.251. In the literature, most papers about the environmental management of educational activities focus on the energy efficiency of buildings and electronic equipment during their use. But this study revealed other environmental hotspots primarily associated with meal consumption followed by ethanol fuel use. Meal consumption patterns can be explained by the fact that people usually eat more often during home-office activities. Otherwise, the transportation impacts due to ethanol use are related mainly to face-to-face classes, as much transport is required such as for food supply and student transportation. Finally, an uncertainty and a sensitivity analysis were designed for the LCA conclusions. We concluded that remote classes during the COVID-19 pandemic tend to minimize the overall evaluated impacts to ten of the thirteen impact categories. An optimal scenario was also proposed showing an overall minimization of the impacts by up to 57%, if a hybrid class model were to be adopted.

One of the best-known tools from Lean Thinking is the Value Stream Mapping (VSM), which stands for a visual modelling approach allowing the identification of critical steps in a supply chain, thus helping to identify organisational bottlenecks and wastes. Despite its relevance, VSM is based on a static report from the time the mapping was performed. To add dynamism to VSM analysis, computer-based simulations can be employed; however, little is done in the domain of Systems Dynamics (SD), a known modelling approach usually employed to get insights about stock and flows behaviour. In this context, this research aims to propose a practical framework called VSM-to-SD to help modellers easily translate VSM into System Dynamics quantitative models using the notation of two known modelling tools on the market, namely Stella(C) and Vensim(C). To demonstrate its usefulness and ease-of-use, a proof-of-concept is developed in an industrial case study. Results suggest the efficiency of the VSM-to-SD framework, including its ability to straightforwardly generate simulation-based VSM, allowing analytic comparisons of different simulation scenarios, and expanding the analytic decision-making capacity of managers desiring to go further than traditional and static VSM.

The aim of this research was to identify and analyze the critical success factors for Bioeconomy development in Brazil, considering Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) as a contributing driving force, and propose guidelines and a roadmap for national policies in emerging economies. To achieve this goal, a Delphi method was used with Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) experts in Brazil. The answers obtained in the final round were analyzed through the Fuzzy Delphi method. Based on these findings and using the existing literature, a set of guidelines and a roadmap were created for public policies development. From the nine critical success factors (CSF) mentioned by the experts during the Delphi survey, seven were selected for the Fuzzy Delphi step. The mapped factors were related to database, data regionalization, professionals training, public policies, public resources, market issues, and cases reporting. Debates about these CSF’s were carried out, and guidelines and a roadmap were proposed for public policies in emerging economies. The interface between LCA and the Bioeconomy represents a recent field of knowledge with a great synergy, although studies on this topic are still scarce. The present study contributes to overcome this gap, and the proposed guidelines and roadmap bring relevant information to expand the literature with tangible ways of moving towards sustainable development economies with special attention for emerging economies.

This paper aims to analyse the impacts of Industry 4.0 on corporate sustainability, considering the Brazilian context. From a literature review, 12 impacts were identified and used to structure a questionnaire. This questionnaire was applied in a survey with experienced Brazilian researchers. The data was analysed using Hierarchical Cluster Analysis, Descriptive Statistics and TOPSIS, which allowed for impact ordering. It was evidenced that all the presented impacts will be evident in the Brazilian context in a ten-year horizon. Of these impacts, six stand out: 1) the reduction of job offers for manual and repetitive activities and the emergence of new, high value-added professions; 2) the emergence of innovative business; 3) the reduction of work accidents due to the expanded use of robots in dangerous tasks for humans; 4) problems with the employees’ qualification pace in the required modernisation changes; 5) the integration of all value chain activities, allowing for a better analysis of environmental, social and economic impacts; and 6) improvements in physical and cognitive ergonomics due to the use of sensors. These findings can contribute to the expansion of the debates related to the theme and can be used as a base for defining future industrial policies in Brazil.

The field of sustainability has evolved considerably since the report “Our Common Future” was published in 1987. Whereas matters related to sustainable development used to be of marginal interest in the 1980s, it has substantially evolved since, and have become mainstream. As a result, there is a plethora of research on different aspects, whose focus has also been influenced by societal developments. This line of thinking also applies to sustainability research in higher education, a special and central field. Unfortunately, the variety of research on matters of sustainable development in universities makes it difficult to obtain an insight into its current status, and to ascertain how it has evolved since 1987. Based on the perceived need to fill this gap, a study focusing on the evolution of university-based sustainability research literature has been undertaken. The study entailed approximately 1700 papers published between 1987 and 2019, being one of the most comprehensive studies on this field ever undertaken. Apart from performing a bibliometric analysis using science mapping software tools, the research clustered the research into some key areas. The results suggest that, whereas impressive, the evolution of university-based sustainability research has been uneven, and calls for a more balanced emphasis to as to cover some research areas which have so far been neglected. The implications of this work are twofold: it will support the further development of the university-based sustainability research literature, and will help to address some thematic gaps, which are seen today, and to which greater attention is needed.

Social projects are an important mean to reduce social problems and they have an increased relevance in contexts of high social inequalities, as it is the case of Brazil. However, the existence of these projects may not be enough, they need to be properly managed, including projects risks. In this context, this paper aims to evaluate the application of risk management in social projects in Brazil. A survey was performed with social project managers and data was analyzed through TOPSIS (Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution), to rank the items application levels, according to the ISO 31,000’s guidelines. Results provide an overview of Brazilian situation. According to the findings presented, the items related to projects context analysis, and responsibility assignments in the projects were the items better applied, while the items related to the understanding of team members regarding risks in social projects and to the amplitude of risk management in the projects were the items with the worst rank positions. The findings presented here contribute to expand the debates on the subject.

Considering the need to prepare students to act towards sustainable development, volunteering activities can be an effective mean for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to develop the required skills in students for it. In this sense, this research aims to analyse the reasons for undergraduate students to participate in voluntary activities. Data from 192 undergraduate students were collected to conduct this analysis. These students were divided into two groups: those that participate (or recently participated) of social projects and those that do not participate. Considering this feature as the dependent variable, seven independent variables were analysed through Binary Logistic Regression. From the seven variables analysed, two were validated as variables that affect the decision of students to engage in voluntary activities: ‘Incentive from the HEI for students to participate in volunteer programs’ (V4) and ‘The student’s own beliefs lead to voluntary work’ (V7). Their odds ratios were 2.901 and 3.164, respectively. The findings of this research contribute to the literature about volunteering, since it explores the motivations that lead undergraduate students to engage in these activities. The findings showed the importance of HEIs (Higher Education Institutions) incentives towards volunteering, which emphasizes the role played by these institutions in students’ actions.

Purpose The article aims to critically analyze the project management developed by research laboratories of a Brazilian university in order to enhance their performance. For this, a critical analysis was performed to identify existing opportunities about the management of schedules and resources. Additionally, a software was developed to enable performance improvement. Design/methodology/approach The methodological procedures used were literature review, for a theoretical foundation, and case study conducted with semi-structured interviews, documentary research and on-site visits. Through a detailed critical analysis of the laboratories' management, it was possible to understand the activities developed and map the main difficulties observed. Findings A total of five plausible points of improvement were identified, namely reduced teams and accumulation of activities; team seasonality; centralized management; deviations from projects and schedule control. Based on the theoretical foundation, it has been proposed adjustments to minimize the mentioned difficulties that can greatly contribute for better management efficiency of multiple research projects. In addition, a software was structured based on the proposed improvements. The laboratories' performance was monitored for a month and significant improvements were observed. Practical implications The information presented here may be of great value to other researchers interested in enhancing research laboratory performance. Originality/value The academic literature presents several examples of project management guidelines application in different organizations; however, there are few studies about the application of them in research laboratories and how to improve their performance.
