Prof. Kangning Xiong is now a Professor and PhD supervisor at the School of Karst Sciences, Guizhou Normal University. Born in 1958, Prof. Kangning Xiong is an expert of the Chinese State Council Government Special Allowance, an outstanding professional and technical talent, the chief scientist of the National Key Research and Development Programme, an expert of the National Sustainable Development Experimental Zone, a member of the World Heritage Expert Committee of the Ministry of Housing and Construction, an expert under the control of Guizhou Province, and a consultant of the Provincial People's Government. In 1985, he graduated from the Department of Geography of Guiyang Normal University with a master's degree in Karst and Cave Studies. From 1988 to 1989, he was a visiting scholar of karst geomorphology and hydrology at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, and a visiting scholar of karst geomorphology and land use research at the University of Oxford, UK, in 1999. He has long been on the front line of teaching and research in karst and caves, rocky desertification control and eco-derivative industries, world natural heritage declaration and protection, and mountain tourism.
