This study expands Carroll’s CSR typology with the public health and safety dimension to examine how the airline industry’s CSR and public health and safety activities influence flight attendants’ organizational identification, self-esteem, and commitment to the company during COVID-19. A total of 342 South Korean flight attendants participated in online surveys. Based on social identity theory and using structural equation modeling (SEM), the study reveals that ethical-, economic-, and philanthropic-CSR and public health and safety are positively related to organizational identification and that all are linked to the self-esteem and organizational commitment of flight attendants. However, legal-CSR did not affect their organizational identification. The results suggest that “public health and safety” should be applied when initiatives aim to enhance flight attendants’ organizational behavior. The study’s findings contribute to the literature by extending the original CSR model and providing theoretical and practical implications for academic researchers and airlines during a pandemic.

Resident participation is crucial to the success of tourism development at community-level destinations. This study examines the effect of residents’ participation on their support for tourism development at the community level through a case study of Gamcheon Culture Village, South Korea. Using the structural equation model (SEM), including the variables of participation of tourism development, community attachment, economic dependence, perceived positive impacts, perceived negative impacts, and attitude toward tourism development, this study found that participation in tourism development significantly influences residents’ attitude toward development. Residents’ participation not only directly affects their attitude toward tourism development, but also indirectly influences it by increasing their positive perception of tourism development. Results empirically reveal that resident participation is critical to tourism development, especially for destinations at the local level.

This study explores how COVID-19-induced stress (CID) influences organizational trust, job satisfaction, self-esteem, and commitment in tourism and hospitality organizations. A total of 427 tourism affiliated employees in South Korea participated in an online survey. Using structural equation modelling (SEM), the proposed conceptual model reveals that CID stress in tourism/hospitality employees is negatively related to organizational trust, job satisfaction, and self-esteem which, in turn, is positively related to organizational commitment. CID stress also indirectly affects organizational commitment. The findings have significant strategic implications for tourism and hospitality organizations‒specifically, the provision of instrumental resources (e.g., safety glasses, latex gloves, hand sanitizers, facial masks) to alleviate their employees’ work-related stress during pandemics.

Although there is the saying “there’s no place like home”, research on a traveler’s sense of feeling at home in an accommodation and its influence on their well-being is underrepresented. Particularly, given the increase of peer-to-peer accommodations and healthcare travel segment, this gap is notable. Analyzing data including 420 respondents who stayed at an Airbnb and 320 who stayed at hotel accommodations, structural equation modeling tested the effect of an “accommodations homescape” on a healthcare traveler’s sense of feeling at home and well-being. The findings have strategic implications that emphasize the need to engineer home-like environments for particular traveler segments.

Most leisure and recreation studies have reported that people who seriously engage in leisure activities tend to be older adults with stable incomes. This study argued that serious leisure individuals could also consist of younger adults with lower incomes. A total of 251 visitors to an X-Games festival participated in the current study which examined whether the motives for attending and satisfaction with the X-Games of serious skateboarders differed from those of casual skateboarders. Recreational specialization and serious leisure indicators were employed to examine the relationships between dimensions of specialization and the motivations to attend and satisfaction with the event. The results of one-way ANOVA indicated that participants identified as serious skateboarders were relatively young and had lower income status than those that were less serious. No relationship was found between the level of leisure seriousness and participants’ motivations and satisfaction with the X-Games event.
